Chapter 396 Jealousy
Giselle's position in the household had always been a bit awkward.
First off, her grandmother, though friends with Lara, came from humble beginnings. After Lara and Jonathan got their family business back on track, Lara took care of her grandmother, who then started a small breakfast shop in Lakeshire City. Her parents worked basic jobs at Prosperous Abundance Group that didn't require any formal education or special skills. Her dad, Kieran Montague, drove for Jonathan, and her mom, Lyanna Patel, was the head of the cleaning crew at the Prosperous Abundance Group building.
The difference in family backgrounds was clear. Even though Lara and Jonathan were kind and often helped the Montague family financially, they never acted superior. But a boss was still a boss, and an employer was still an employer. Even after Giselle's parents and grandmother passed away, and Lara took her in as her goddaughter, Giselle always remembered her family's teachings: never forgot your place just because your employer showed you a bit of kindness.
Secondly, she loved Jonathan. She couldn't pinpoint when this love began, but by the time she realized it, it was already uncontrollable.
The King family was full of elites, each one possessing both looks and substance. The Montague family, on the other hand, was different. Giselle's parents were rough around the edges, but she seemed to be an exception, as if her genes had mutated. From a young age, she felt she was different and believed that with her good looks and exceptional social skills, she could make a name for herself.
She moved into the King family home at 16, right when she was beginning to understand love, and Jonathan was the first man who fit her ideal image. Of course, her feelings for Jonathan gradually faded as she realized he only saw her as a child and never gave her a second glance.
Nominally, she was Lara's goddaughter, but in reality, she was somewhere between a maid and a granddaughter. She had access to money and her words carried some weight, but she was never truly treated as a cherished young lady.
Giselle was emotionally intelligent and carefully stayed by Lara's side for seven years, earning the trust of Lara and the King family. If she hadn't been diagnosed with an illness last year, her path would have continued to be smooth. Now, everything she had painstakingly built seemed to be for nothing.
She wondered if she could indulge herself in her final moments, act like a true young lady, and perhaps truly love Jonathan.
There might have been a chance, but now Elsa had arrived.
Watching the joyful family reunion, Giselle felt quite displeased. She quietly poured herself a glass of champagne and drank it in one gulp.
"Giselle, you shouldn't be drinking," Jonathan said, noticing her out of the corner of his eye and stopping her.
Giselle's gloomy mood lifted slightly; Jonathan still paid attention to her.
"Elsa's back today, I'm happy for Grandma," Giselle said, putting on a flawless smile.
"Elsa, congratulations on your family reunion," she said, raising her empty glass to Elsa.
Elsa quickly raised her glass in return, her eyes red with gratitude.
Elsa was living the life Giselle wanted. A girl from the slums woke up to find herself a real princess, while Giselle, from now until her death, would only be a servant adopted by royalty.
Blinded by jealousy, Giselle failed to see that even if Elsa hadn't become a true King family young lady, she would still have a bright future. Elsa was the kind of woman who could marry a billionaire CEO if she wanted to, and make millions effortlessly, unlike Giselle.
Her jealousy of Elsa was so intense that she couldn't see any of this.
