Chapter 15 Don't Embarrass Me
Elsa and Jonny hadn’t seen each other for a long time, so they met at a coffee shop to catch up.
"I've heard about what's been happening in your family since I returned, and I've been looking for you," Jonny said directly.
"I see," Elsa said.
Elsa's mother's suicide was no secret, so it was natural that Jonny knew about it.
She ordered a cup of espresso for herself and a Frappuccino for Jonny, his favorite.
"It's been six months since we last met, and you've changed a lot, but your taste in coffee remains the same."
Jonny watched as she drank the rich, undiluted coffee in one gulp. He frowned as if he could feel the bitter taste.
"Have I changed?" Elsa couldn't help but laugh at his expression.
"Yes, you used to smile a lot and were very pure. Now you still smile, but there's no light in your eyes."
Jonny assumed that Elsa was feeling down because of her mother's departure.
"Elsa, one must always look forward. Your mother would want you to be happy. If you're willing, I can help you complete your studies. And as for your brother's illness, you don't need to worry. I'll cover all the expenses."
He took out a bank card.
"There are tens of thousands of dollars here; use it first, and if it is not enough, I can help."
Jonny, being the less cherished second son of the affluent Jones family with a humble allowance, still magnanimously put forward his savings.
"Jonny, thank you. I've already sorted out the financial matters." Elsa smiled gratefully. She was truly fortunate to have the support of both Chloe and Jonny.
The two chatted from noon until three in the afternoon before settling the bill and leaving.
Outside the coffee shop, a black car blocked their path.
The window rolled down, revealing Luke's stern face.
"Get in," he ordered expressionlessly.
Elsa raised an eyebrow, completely ignoring him.
"Do you know Luke?" Jonny asked in a low voice.
"Not really."
She walked ahead, and the car moved slightly forward, blocking her way.
"Don't be stubborn," Luke remembered giving her the lowest score earlier that morning, so he softened his tone a bit.
"Luke, you said not to bother you anymore." Elsa held a grudge.
"I also said I'd sleep with you every time I see you." Luke's tone was as casual as if he was discussing the weather. Max, however, was shocked and braked abnormally.
"Luke, show some manners!" Jonny was angered by this statement.
"Why are you in such a hurry when I'm having a private conversation with my woman?" Luke didn't even glance at Jonny, saying something indifferent. He looked back at Elsa. "This is your last chance. Are you getting in or not?"
The words "my woman" puzzled Elsa. She thought, ‘Didn't he just mock me in the morning?’
"Luke, don't bully her!" Jonny, known for his stubborn streak, was now tightening his hands into fists, poised to lash out at Luke.
Luke, however, merely returned his gaze with a calm demeanor, not showing the slightest hint of fear.
Sensing trouble, Elsa reached out and pulled Jonny back.
"Jonny, go back first. I'll talk to Luke and then go home."
"Elsa, what business could you have with a person like him?" Jonny was still furious about Luke's words.
"Of course, it's about sleeping,” Luck said indifferently, and he stressed the word “sleeping” intentionally.
In an instant, Jonny’s fist swung up to Luke. But Elsa hurried to stand in front of him and reluctantly took the blow with her left face.
“Elsa, sorry, are you ok? Let’s go to the hospital,” Jonny said in a hurry when he realized that he had accidentally hit Elsa.
Jonny’s punch was so fierce that Elsa had the illusion that her teeth had been knocked out. The corners of her mouth were cracked, and now she felt a ringing in her ears.
“He was telling the truth. And if you still consider me a friend, go back first and spare me the embarrassment," Elsa said while dropping her eyes and covering her sore cheek. She was indeed embarrassed.
In the past, she was Jonny's bright, pure little alumna, but now she was a woman who had gotten involved with Luke for her own gain.
Even the unharmed side of her face was “hot,” too. Without waiting for Jonny's reaction, she got into Luke's car.
Luke held significant power in Maplewood City. If Jonny had hit him, it wouldn't just be Jonny in trouble, but the entire Jones family would be at risk. She couldn't let Jonny take that risk.
Sitting in the car, Luke looked at her deeply with unreadable emotions.
