Chapter 158 Isaac Arrives

The wind howled in her ears.

Raindrops pelted her face and eyes like stones. Her body was plummeting rapidly.

Nora felt her head spinning, her body tumbling violently as if she were inside a washing machine.

Before she hit the bottom of the cliff, Nora passed out. When she woke up again, it was already dark and she couldn't see anything.

Nora could only hear the howling wind around her, the heavy rain, and the roaring water.

Slowly, her body started to regain sensation. Nora realized that the lower half of her body was still submerged in water.

Her legs were aching, swollen, and cold to the bone. Nora shivered with fear, an overwhelming sense of unknown terror spreading through her heart.

She didn't dare move recklessly, afraid of accidentally falling into the current.

Although Nora could swim, falling into the river in such complete darkness was still very dangerous. Moreover, with the heavy rain, the water level had likely risen.

In a flood, even a professional swimmer would be in danger.

Therefore, Nora didn't dare to act rashly. She carefully felt around, confirming that her upper body was lying on the shore, and then cautiously crawled onto land.

Once ashore, she curled up on the ground, hugging herself tightly, sobbing quietly in fear.

In the wilderness, there was a torrential downpour and a flooding river nearby.

Being far from the city with no light, coupled with the rain, the sky was devoid of stars without source of illumination. Nora couldn't see anything. In such a completely unknown environment, with nothing visible, people instinctively felt fear and dread.

Moreover, her legs were either soaked for too long or injured, making any movement extremely painful. Nora cried for a while before remembering to reach for her phone in her pocket.

But the phone was waterlogged and couldn't be turned on.

The glimmer of hope in her heart was instantly extinguished.

"Nora!" some shouted.

At that moment, Nora seemed to hear a distant shout. Because of the loud rain and the faint voice, she wasn't sure if she really heard it or was hallucinating.

"Nora, where are you?" that voice came again.

In a daze, Nora heard the voice again.

She froze for a moment.

'Could I be hallucinating twice in a row? Is someone looking for me?' Nora thought.

Nora was both surprised and delighted, excitedly shouting, "I'm here."

But her voice couldn't travel far over the rain and water sounds.

The person searching for her seemed not to hear her. "Nora!"

The voice seemed to be getting farther away. The person hadn't found her and was moving in the opposite direction.

Nora was extremely anxious.

She gritted her teeth, struggled to prop herself up, and moved laboriously toward the direction of the voice.

But her body was severely weakened, her legs swollen and painful from being in the water too long, making her movements slow.

With the darkness around her, she couldn't see anything.

After just a few steps, she tripped.

With a splash, she accidentally slid into the river. Nora frantically grabbed at the grass and trees on the shore, using a lot of effort to climb back up.

This struggle almost exhausted her remaining strength. Her head spun with dizziness.

Nora lay weakly on the ground, unable to even get up. She covered her face with her hand, sobbing silently.

It seemed she was destined not to escape this ordeal.

"Nora!" Suddenly, a joyful voice rang clearly in her ear. Nora was stunned.

'The voice is so familiar. It is Isaac's voice! Am I hallucinating at the brink of death?' Nora pondered.

When she and Mortimer went on the outing with the kids, they hadn't told Isaac.

Even if someone came looking for her, it couldn't be Isaac.

At that moment, Nora felt someone grab her hand, forcibly pulling it away from her face.

Nora felt a strong beam of light shining on her. She slowly opened her eyes.

The bright light made her squint uncomfortably. After a couple of seconds, she finally saw clearly. It really was Isaac!

He was wearing a raincoat and a headlamp, looking at her with joy.

"Nora, I finally found you!" Isaac knelt beside her excitedly, hugging her tightly. His voice was choked with emotion.

Nora was touched, tears mixing with the rain on her face.

"Isaac, how is it you?" Nora asked.

Isaac stiffened his body, his voice deepening, "Who do you expect to find you?"

Nora said, "I mean how do you know I am in danger? How do you come to find me?"

Isaac explained, "I see Mortimer mobilizing a lot of people to the outskirts and couldn't reach you, so I have someone investigate the truth. Then I find him. After some pressure, he told me you have fallen off a cliff. So I come down to search for you. I've been looking for seven hours and finally found you!"

Nora stared at him blankly, emotions surging within her.

"Let's not talk too much now. It's raining heavily. The river's water level is rising, and a flood could happen. I need to get you away from the river and find shelter from the rain," Isaac said seriously.

Nora said, "I can't walk."

Isaac patted her head, his steady voice full of strength, "It's nothing. I'll carry you."

He turned to squat. "Get on. We'll leave now."

Nora struggled to move her body and climbed onto his back.

Isaac immediately stood up, walking steadily forward. By the light of the headlamp, Nora saw that they were surrounded by towering trees, with weeds taller than a person on the path.

This was clearly a nearly untouched forest. They must be far from where she fell.

'How did Isaac find me?' Nora thought.

With the rain heavier, the river's water level had overflowed the banks, spreading around. They had walked several hundred meters into the forest, away from the river, but the water level was still rising.

A flood was indeed imminent.

Nora weakly said, "Isaac, put me down and leave yourself. You're too slow carrying me. With the water rising so fast, I'll drag you down."

Isaac reassured her, "It's nothing. I observe on the way here. From here, we can quickly get through the woods to the foot of the mountain. Once we climb the mountain, we won't fear the flood."

Nora was still worried that their speed couldn't match the rising water.

Isaac said, "No matter what, I won't leave you behind. When I came to find you, I decided that if I couldn't find you and bring you back, I wouldn't go back either."

Nora's heart trembled, her eyes shining with shock. After a long while, she regained some composure and hoarsely asked, "Did you forget what I told you yesterday? I said I don't love you anymore."
