Chapter 169 Protecting Her Under Another Identity

At 7 PM, Steve showed up at the shop again.

Nora was just seeing a male customer out the door.

Steve walked up, kissed her cheek, and said with a playful tone, "Hey babe, done for the day?"

Nora stiffened.

What was Steve up to now?

The male customer said, "So you have a boyfriend? No wonder you turned down my offers to set you up."

Nora forced a smile.

The customer glanced at Steve and laughed, "Your boyfriend looks good. You two make a nice pair."

Nora just said, "Thanks. I'll have your painting done in a week. Take care."

The customer nodded, smiled, and left.

Nora stepped away from Steve, glaring, "What are you doing? Stop kissing me out of nowhere!"

Steve replied innocently, "You're my girlfriend. Can't I kiss you?"

Nora shot back, "Even if we're dating, you can't just do whatever you want. Kiss me again, and I'll punch you!"

Steve laughed, "Just don't hit my face, okay?"

Nora's mouth twitched.

He was so unreasonable!

Steve said, "You haven't eaten yet, right? I'll make you something."

Nora couldn't shake him off, so she let him be.

Steve acted like he owned the place, heading straight to the kitchen to cook.

Meanwhile, Nora went back to work.

After half an hour, Steve brought out the food.

"Nora, dinner's ready."

Nora's stomach growled; she hadn't eaten since noon.

She put down her paintbrush, tidied up, and sat across from Steve.

"Eat more, you've lost weight," Steve said, sounding concerned.

He had noticed she looked thinner.

Nora started eating silently.

After a bite, she paused and looked at Steve.

"What's wrong?" Steve asked.

Nora stared at him and asked quietly, "Why does your cooking taste like my ex's?"

Steve's eyes flickered.

"Maybe we had the same teacher? I trained with a chef," Steve replied.

Nora looked away and didn't ask more.

She ate in silence, feeling a pang of sadness.

Why did Isaac's shadow still linger?

"Nora!" a familiar voice came from the front hall.

Nora recognized it immediately.

Her face darkened, and she put down her fork, walking out.

"Nora, why do you look so pale? Didn't sleep well?" Kalista asked, smiling smugly.

Nora's face was gloomy. "What are you doing here? Leave now. You're not welcome!"

"Why so hostile? Is it because Isaac chose me and you're mad?" Kalista taunted.

Nora clenched her fists, her eyes darkening.

Kalista kept going, "You rarely wear makeup, but last night you went all out. Did you think Isaac was going to propose? What a joke. He doesn't care about you. He's so hurt by you that he feels nothing but disgust and resentment. Even if he stays single forever, he'd never get back with you!"

Nora replied coldly, "Are you done? If so, get out, or I'll make you."

Kalista didn't budge. "Nora, how can you be so clueless? You betrayed Isaac and moved on right after the divorce. Why would he want a promiscuous woman like you? Isaac told me even looking at you makes him feel dirty. How could he ever marry you?"

Nora felt a sharp pain in her heart. Feeling dirty just by looking at her? What about those three days in the cave?

Her heart ached, and she struggled to breathe.

Seeing Nora's distress, Kalista felt triumphant. She had come to make Nora miserable.

Kalista pulled an invitation from her bag and handed it to Nora. "Isaac and I are getting engaged in seven days. You must come to witness our happiness."

Nora glanced at the invitation, feeling colder inside.

Just then, Steve walked out from behind the screen. He took the invitation, tore it up, and tossed it in the trash.

His whole demeanor was icy as he glared at Kalista. "Don't harass Nora again, or you'll regret it. Now, get out!"

Kalista trembled, fear spreading through her. "How dare you! I'm about to marry Isaac. Aren't you afraid of offending me and the Porter Family?"

Steve replied coldly, "Let the Porter Family come after me. Until then, get out!"

"You..." Kalista was furious.

Before she could finish, Steve pushed her out of the shop. At the door, he gave her a hard slap.

Kalista screamed, "How dare you hit me?!"

Steve threatened, "Watch your mouth. Insult my woman again, and it won't just be a slap; I'll cut your tongue out!"
