Chapter 272 Triplets
Elder's face turned beet red with anger. "You really don't get it, do you? Equinoxia might not be as big as Horizonia, but it's still a country. Being a king is way more impressive than running the Radcliffe family business. How can you be so dumb?"
Mortimer just looked down, staying quiet.
Elder's voice got colder. "Is this about Nora?"
Mortimer remained silent, but his silence said it all.
Elder's face twisted with rage, his fists clenched, and his whole body shook.
"Look at you! How many stupid things have you done because of Nora? What good has it done? Nora doesn't care about you. No matter what you do, she won't like you! Even if you give up the throne and come back to be with her, she still won't choose you. After all these years, how do you still not get it?"
Pain flickered in Mortimer's eyes.
He understood this...
But what if he could get what he wanted?
He looked up, his gentle eyes a bit red, and asked, his voice trembling, "Grandpa, do you think I'm worse than Isaac?"
Elder sighed, "It's not about being better or worse, Mortimer. Love is about who the heart chooses."
He reached out and patted Mortimer's shoulder, his voice full of sorrow. "Mortimer, you're amazing. You could have any woman you want. Why are you stuck on Nora? Forget her and find someone else. If Nora was going to fall for you, she would have by now. Staying by her side won't change anything. Trust me, okay?"
Mortimer pressed his lips together, his eyes full of stubbornness.
Elder went on, "Even if you don't want to go back to Equinoxia, it's fine. This will always be your home. As long as you come back, you're the heir to the Radcliffe family. But I hope you let go of Nora. Being obsessed with her will only bring you pain."
Mortimer still didn't say a word.
Elder sighed deeply.
He now regretted helping Nora back then. If he hadn't softened and helped her, letting her die in the slums, would things be better now?
Mortimer said goodbye to Elder and went back to the villa where Nora, Magnus, and Soren had lived for a while.
There were still a lot of their things left behind.
Magnus and Soren's toys and clothes, and the clothes he bought for Nora, were still there.
Mortimer took out a piece of clothing Nora had worn and held it close. "Nora, I tried, but I just can't let go."
He closed his eyes, a tear sliding down his cheek. "Nora, you'll forgive me, won't you?"
He stayed in the room for a long time.
When his tears finally dried, he carefully put Nora's clothes back in the wardrobe.
He walked out and went to the study.
He then dialed a number. "Did you bring the person back?"
A respectful voice came through the phone. "We just got off the cruise ship and are driving back to the city. We should be there in about an hour."
Mortimer acknowledged and hung up. He stood by the window, staring blankly at the sky.
In the end, he had taken this step.
When Nora was giving birth, he had a backup plan.
If things had gone smoothly between him and Nora, he would never have taken this step.
But now, as Nora grew colder towards him, he had no choice but to use some drastic measures.
An hour later.
A man who looked a bit like Alaric, carrying a tightly wrapped child, walked into the villa. He took the child straight upstairs and knocked on the study door. "Mr. Radcliffe, the person is here."
Mortimer's clear voice came from the study. "Come in."
Horatio brought the child into the study.
Mortimer looked calmly at the child.
Although the child was tightly wrapped, his height was about the same as Magnus's, looking only about three years old.
"Take off his mask and hat," Mortimer said slowly.
Horatio responded and immediately removed them.
A delicate face was revealed, fair and tender, and very smart-looking. Moreover, he looked exactly like Magnus! But his eyes were more indifferent.
Magnus was already more mature than kids his age. But this child looked even more mature.
Mortimer waved his hand, signaling Horatio to leave.
Horatio respectfully exited the study.
Mortimer beckoned to the little boy. "Barrett, come here."
Barrett Foster immediately walked over to Mortimer.
Mortimer patted his head and said gently, "I gave you life and raised you for so long. Now it's time for you to repay me."
Barrett looked seriously at Mortimer and nodded solemnly.
A gentle smile spread across Mortimer's face. "Good boy."
He opened his computer and played a video, then let Barrett sit in the chair. "Watch the boy in the video carefully, learn his every move and way of speaking. Once you've got it down, I'll send you to replace him."
Barrett nodded.
Mortimer continued, "I'll also teach you some of his habits and common knowledge."
Barrett nodded again.
Mortimer said, "Learn his voice and speaking habits too."
After giving these instructions, Mortimer left the study, leaving it to Barrett.
This Barrett was also one of Nora's children. She had triplets back then, two boys and a girl.
When Nora was giving birth, she had a difficult labor and bled heavily, falling into a coma for a while. The children were taken care of by people Mortimer sent.
He secretly took one of the children and had someone raise him quietly.
Then he told Nora that she had given birth to three children, but one had died, leaving only two alive.
To make Nora believe, he even found a newborn's corpse to show her.
Nora was heartbroken but didn't suspect anything.
He stayed with Nora and helped arrange a funeral for the child.
As time passed, Nora gradually forgot about the child who "died" at birth.
Nowadays, unless someone brought it up, she probably wouldn't even remember that she had given birth to triplets, right?
