Chapter 36 Isaac Hits Her for Kalista
Nora nearly had a heart attack from the shock.
Her eyes flew open, and instinctively, her hands came up, pushing against the man who had burst in and kissed her without a word.
His kisses were searing and wild as if he intended to devour her.
His body radiated intense heat.
Held in his embrace, she felt as though she might burn.
Her hands pressed against his chest, her fingers retracting from the scorching touch.
For the first time, she could clearly see his face.
Her anxiety eased significantly.
Yet she continued to push him away with all her might.
But her strength was no match for his.
Left with no choice, Nora bit down on his tongue.
The man grunted from the pain, his grip on her easing up.
Nora seized the opportunity to push him away.
"Steve, what the heck are you doing? Bursting in and kissing me without a word—I thought you were some thug trying to scare me half to death!"
She was still patting her chest, trying to calm her racing heart, not completely recovered from the shock.
Breathing heavily, Steve's intense, fiery gaze landed on Nora.
It suddenly hit her—she was in the middle of a shower, stark naked.
And he was staring at her with such naked boldness.
"Get out!" she screamed belatedly, wrapping her arms around herself, her cheeks blazing red.
A sly smile curled Steve's lips, a teasing glint in his eyes.
"Is there a part of you I haven't seen?"
Nora's face heated even more, and she glared at him, both embarrassed and annoyed. "The circumstances were different before!"
The first time, she had been drunk—completely unaware.
The second, she was injured, and he was merely applying medication.
How could those times compare to now?
"In my eyes, there's no difference. You're always irresistible," he claimed.
His words made Nora's face burn so fiercely she felt it could bleed.
"Stop looking and get out!"
Steve didn't move away. Instead, he leaned closer.
With only inches between them, she could feel the warmth radiating from his body without any contact.
Nora's body trembled involuntarily, her heart racing.
"I had to entertain some clients tonight, and someone drugged my drink. I need your help," Steve said, cutting her off with a serious tone.
Flustered, Nora couldn't meet his gaze. "Maybe you should go to the hospital? I'm not prepared for this."
"We're a couple, aren't we? How much more adjustment do you need?" Steve asked.
Nora bit her lip, at a loss for words.
She thought she had grown accustomed to him.
But the unexpected night with Isaac had thrown her emotions into turmoil once again.
"Is it because... you're trying to stay loyal to your ex?" Steve asked heavily.
"I'm not staying faithful to him!" Nora vehemently retorted.
Isaac had hurled such harsh insults at her, saying that just the sight of her made him sick.
And tonight, he brought Kalista back to the family mansion to roll in the sheets where they'd slept just the night before, seeking to erase her scent and memories.
The thought pricked at Nora's heart viciously, stoking a rage within her.
Desperate to mask her scent, Isaac couldn't wait to have Kalista in bed.
Well, she'd erase his lingering essence and memories from herself too!
Without another word, Nora reached out, wrapped her arms around Steve, and on her tiptoes, she kissed him.
Fire coursed through Steve, fueled further as if doused with gasoline, blazing even hotter.
He held her tightly, wishing he could merge her into his very being.
But just as he was about to cross the line, Nora suddenly pushed him away.
"What's wrong now?" Steve fought to calm the turmoil inside him, his voice husky.
Panting, Nora looked at him with a complex expression for a few seconds before slowly saying, "Katie was once your client, and she's my ex-husband's grandmother. I still have dealings with the Porter family, and I might run into Katie again. So I can't get intimate with you. Wouldn't that be like sleeping with the same man as my ex-husband's grandma?"
The mere thought sent a shiver of disgust through her.
Steve's mouth twitched violently.
What on earth was she thinking?
He had no such improper relationship with the old lady!
It was all Harold's damn rumors causing this mess!
Steve clenched his teeth and insisted, "My relationship with Katie is not what you think. I swear. There’s nothing inappropriate ever happened between us!"
"How can that be possible? Harold said that Katie supported you for a long time," Nora said skeptically.
Grinding his teeth, Steve explained, "She took care of me like a grandson, that's all. It wasn't what you think! At her age, that's hardly plausible anyway! She began treating me like family because her grandson was too busy with work to spend time with her, and it just so happened that I reminded her of him," Steve clarified.
Nora paused.
Thinking it over, that actually made some sense.
She often felt that Steve shared a striking resemblance with Isaac.
Aside from their faces and voices being different, they were almost identical in every other way.
Unexpectedly, just like her, Katie had also treated Steve as a stand-in for Isaac.
"Are you really not lying to me?"
"I swear I'm not lying to you. If I am, then I don't want a penny of that three hundred million dollars."
Nora, seeing his sincere assurance, finally believed him.
"So, can we get started now?" Steve's voice, edged with a magnetic huskiness, teased a hint of ambiguity as he lifted the corners of his mouth.
Nora's heart skipped a beat as she gazed at his towering figure and involuntarily took a step back.
Even without the psychological pressure from Katie's end,
she still felt an uneasiness deep inside.
"I'm not ready yet."
Before she could finish, Steve pinned her against the wall, his lips thin and feverish, claiming hers in a searing kiss.
Nora was defenseless against his assault, quickly finding herself breathless, her mind blank, her skin flushed with a telltale red.
All her strength seemed to be drained, not an ounce left to resist.
Had Steve not been holding her, she would have slumped to the floor.
After a moment, Steve lifted her in his arms and strode back to the bedroom.
Nora's hands hung limply around his neck, her whole body collapsing into his embrace.
She looked up at him with eyes defined in black and white, shadows of complexity within.
As they reached the room and he laid her on the bed, preparing to join her, she murmured,
"Why do you have to be so much like Isaac? Even your kiss, so reminiscent of his. Why is that?"
Her hand slowly rose, reaching toward his face.
Steve's gaze darkened instantly, his body tensing in response.
