Chapter 554 Tell Mommy a Secret
Isaac nodded, "Yes, I saw it."
Nora asked, "Did you hear what we were saying?"
Isaac nodded again, "Although I was a bit far away and missed some parts, I heard most of it. I can guess the rest."
Nora pressed her lips together, not knowing what to say.
Isaac stepped forward and gently hugged Nora, "Don't think too much about it now. It's late, let's go back and rest. Tomorrow, we'll take Magnus to see Rhys for an examination to see if there are any signs of human interference. If it is, then maybe there's still hope."
"If something happens to Magnus, I will make sure Mortimer pays for it with his life!"
Isaac's eyes flashed with cold light, and a killing intent slowly emerged.
"He plotted against me, and I could overlook it for the sake of our families, but he should never have laid a hand on an innocent Magnus!"
Once, he and Mortimer had been very close, but now he hated Mortimer just as much, and it pained him deeply.
His once best friend had become the person who hurt him the most.
Nora felt a pang of bitterness in her heart and could only hope that it was a result of human interference.
She still couldn't accept the fact that Magnus's days were numbered.
Ever since Amara came to her, she felt like she was in a dream, everything was so absurd, so unreal.
The next morning, Nora and Isaac took Magnus to see Rhys.
Soren, having been separated from Nora for too long, didn't want to go to kindergarten alone and insisted to go with them. Nora took a leave of absence for her and brought her along to the hospital.
When they arrived at the hospital, Rhys was already there.
Nora briefly explained her suspicions, telling Rhys that she suspected Magnus's illness was caused by someone and asked him to examine Magnus again carefully.
Rhys was hesitant at first, but after Isaac told him that Nora already knew the truth about Magnus's condition, he finally spoke up.
Rhys said seriously, "I don't know why you suspect Magnus's illness is man-made, but I can assure you that Magnus's illness is caused by a genetic mutation, not poisoning. If he had been poisoned, I would have detected it in the first examination."
"Although genetic mutations can be triggered by external factors, it's very complex and takes a long time. No one would go to such lengths to harm a person."
"Moreover, who would go to such trouble to harm a three-year-old child?"
Hearing Rhys's words, Nora's heart sank to the bottom.
If it wasn't man-made, did that mean Magnus was beyond saving?
Isaac's face was also grim, but he refused to give up, saying, "There might have been something missed in the previous examinations, and the poison might have a latent period. It might not have been detected before, but it could be now. Please check him again."
Rhys sighed helplessly. In the end, he complied with their request and conducted a thorough examination of Magnus again.
Unfortunately, the results were the same as before. There was no indication that the illness was caused by poisoning. Magnus was sick because of a problem with his body.
Hearing this, Nora's last shred of hope was completely shattered.
If it wasn't poisoning, there was no antidote, and Magnus was beyond saving.
Nora swayed and almost lost her balance. Isaac quickly supported her, and she barely managed to stand.
Rhys felt bad seeing them like this, but there was nothing he could do.
Although he was a skilled doctor, he wasn't a god who could cure every illness. There were many diseases he couldn't do anything about.
Nora forced herself to stay strong and went home with Isaac and the two children.
She was in low spirits the whole way and couldn't pull herself together even after they got home.
While Soren was playing by herself, Magnus quietly approached Nora.
"Mommy," Magnus called in a sweet childlike voice, gently holding her hand, "Are you sad because I'm sick?"
Nora quickly composed herself and forced a smile, "Don't think like that. Mommy is worried about work, not you."
Magnus pouted and said gloomily, "Mommy, don't lie to me. I know you're sad because of my illness. Mommy, am I incurable?"
Nora hurriedly denied, "No, you will get better. Don't overthink it."
Magnus said, "But I overheard your conversation with Mr. Hawkins at the hospital. Mr. Hawkins said he couldn't cure me."
Nora's heart skipped a beat, and the forced smile on her face froze. She looked at Magnus in a daze, not knowing how to respond.
After a long while, she finally said hoarsely, "We were joking, it's not true. Don't take it seriously. You will get better, you will."
As she spoke, tears uncontrollably welled up in her eyes. She bit her lip, but a pained sob still escaped her mouth.
She hugged Magnus tightly, her heart filled with anguish.
Her son was standing right in front of her, but Rhys said he only had three months to live.
In three months, this vibrant little life would be buried in the cold, dark ground.
No, she couldn't accept it, she didn't want to accept it!
Magnus wrapped his arms around Nora's neck, resting his little head on her shoulder, and whispered in her ear, "Mommy, I have a secret to tell you. Once you know, you won't be sad anymore."
Nora choked and asked, "Okay, tell me, what's the secret?"
But she didn't really care. She felt that no secret could fill the void of losing her child.
Unless Magnus told her he would get better.
Magnus whispered in her ear, "Mommy, I'm not really Magnus, my name is Barrett."
"Magnus won't die. Daddy hid him at home. Ask Daddy to take you to find him. Magnus will always be with you, Daddy, and Soren."
"I'm a bad kid. I hurt Mommy, great-grandfather, Soren, and Daddy. So, God is punishing me. I deserve it."
He didn't have long to live, so he wasn't afraid of Mortimer threatening him anymore, keeping him away from his parents. He wasn't afraid of his mommy hating him, despising him.
To keep his mommy from being sad, he chose to tell her that he wasn't Magnus.
He wanted to tell her that he was a despicable thief who stole Magnus's identity and life.
Now, he wanted to return Magnus's identity and be the unwanted Barrett again.
He thought that if his mommy knew she wouldn't lose Magnus, only a bad child she never knew existed, she wouldn't be sad.
