Chapter 25 Isaac, the Big Jerk
Outside the shopping mall.
Kalista had been waiting from dawn till dusk, and even after the mall had shut down for the night, Isaac never showed.
The onlookers had all dispersed.
Only Kalista remained, standing forlornly at the entrance, her plight pitifully obvious.
Finally losing control over her fury and frustration, Kalista let out a piercing scream, "Nora, you wretch, we are sworn enemies!"
With the mall closed, even if she waited longer and Isaac arrived, it wouldn't resolve anything.
Kalista glared at Jonas, who was lazily sleeping on a bench in the distance, and bellowed, "Take me back!"
Jonas yawned, ambled over, and wheeled her away in silence.
Back at the hospital, as Kalista lay in her bed, the anger within her refused to subside.
She would never let Nora off the hook.
A sinister gleam flashed in her eyes. She pulled out her phone and dialed the emergency number, her voice steady but menacing. "I want to report an attempted murder. I'm currently in the hospital, and I have surveillance footage as evidence."
At eleven o'clock at night, Nora was closing up her shop, getting ready to head home.
Just as she had locked the door, police sirens suddenly wailed in the distance, growing louder.
Nora initially thought the police car would merely pass by.
It wasn't until the police cruiser pulled up in front of her and several officers, warrant in hand, approached that she realized she was the one they were after.
"Nora?" one of the officers began, "We received a report of an attempted homicide, and after preliminary evidence review, the department has issued a warrant for your arrest. Please come with us to assist in further investigation."
Nora's brow furrowed. "Attempted homicide? Did Kalista call this in?"
"The complainant is indeed Kalista. Please come with us," the officer insisted.
Nora's face darkened. "I was detained last night over this matter and released on bail. Why am I being arrested again today?"
"We've checked the system, and there is no record of your detention," the officer replied.
Confusion creased her forehead. No record of her detention? But last night, Isaac had taken her to the station—what was that all about?
The officers didn't give her the chance to ask any more questions; they cuffed her and led her to the police car.
Minutes later, Nora found herself in an interrogation room at the station. The officers played a surveillance video for her.
She had seen this footage before. It was the same one Isaac had shown her, the one that obscured key movements, making it look as though she had pushed Kalista in front of an oncoming car.
"The content caught on this surveillance shows you deliberately pushing Kalista into traffic. Do you admit to what's depicted here?" an officer asked.
Nora's complexion paled, her voice trembling. "This footage is not conclusive proof; it's not comprehensive. I didn't push Kalista; she pushed me first. When I fell onto the road, I reflexively grabbed her hand, flinging her out, and just then, a car happened to be passing by. It was all a coincidence, not an intentional act on my part!"
"The video we have clearly shows you pushing her into the path of the vehicle, resulting in her being struck," the officer countered. "We will continue to gather evidence, and in the meantime, you should reach out to your family. They might find evidence to support you, and you should also get a lawyer."
Nora held her phone.
After a moment of hesitation, she dialed Mortimer.
"What's going on? Why are you calling me so late? Is something wrong?" Mortimer's smooth voice carried a hint of humor.
Nora's voice trembled with a bitter edge. "I'm afraid I'm in trouble again. I got arrested, and I'm at the police station now."
She then detailed the situation to Mortimer.
After she finished, she asked, "When you came to bail me out last night, did you ask them why they were holding me? I suspect Isaac didn't actually report me. He might've just used his connections to confine me in a room, as there's no record of my detention here and no police report from yesterday."
Mortimer paused for a few seconds before replying, "I didn't ask for details yesterday, but if there's no detention or police report, maybe he really didn't report you."
Nora fell silent.
She had thought Isaac was cold-hearted enough to send her to jail over Kalista.
It turns out he was just trying to scare her.
Still, his actions at the hotel yesterday remained unforgivable in her eyes.
"Don't worry just yet; I'll have someone look into it. I promise I'll get you out of this," Mortimer assured her earnestly.
Nora said, "I didn't push Kalista; she pushed me first. I just reflexively pulled her and accidentally sent her flying. The video the cops have is blocked by trees at crucial moments. It only shows me throwing her in front of a car, making it look intentional."
She hoped to clear her name, but the complete footage was essential for that.
The only camera that captured the incident didn't get the full scene, which was detrimental to her case.
Proving her innocence seemed almost impossible now.
Her only option was to persuade Kalista to drop the charges.
Or find a good lawyer to reduce her sentence.
The more Nora thought about it, the more desperate she felt.
She couldn't believe her last three months of freedom could be spent behind bars.
After the call, her phone was confiscated.
She was then moved to a detention cell.

Molly Estate.
Isaac, masked as Steve arrived at Nora's doorstep.
He took out his keys to unlock the door.
Just then, his phone in his pocket vibrated gently.
Pulling it out, he saw it was a call from Jonas.
Jonas had been shadowing Kalista all day long, and when the phone rang, it was a safe bet that she was looking for him.
Isaac didn't think twice before hanging up.
Seconds later, Wesley's call came through.
Isaac answered with a hint of irritation, "If this is about Kalista, save it. I don't want to hear anything about her today!"
Wesley's voice betrayed urgency, "Isaac, don't hang up! It's about Kalista, sure, but it's also about Nora!"
Isaac's brow furrowed. "What is it? They ran into each other again?"
"It's not that. Kalista's called the cops, accusing Nora of attempted murder, and she handed over surveillance footage of Nora pushing her to the police! They've issued a warrant and took Nora in, and with the charges being pretty serious, she can't post bail yet!" Wesley explained.
Isaac's expression darkened.
He turned on his heel and strode away.
Half an hour later, with a chill emanating from him, Isaac entered Kalista's ward.
"Who gave you the right to call the cops on Nora?"
