Chapter 48 She Called Out Another Man's Name
Nora was dumbfounded.
Shouldn't Isaac have found her debauched, her bold advances repelling enough to demand her departure, instructing her to vanish without a trace? Why hadn't he erupted in anger?
Why did he agree to her bold request and actually intend to spend the night with her?
Nora was utterly bewildered by Isaac's reaction, her mind blank.
Isaac wrapped his arms around her and carried her back into the bedroom before she could snap out of her daze.
Gently, he laid her on the bed and climbed in after her.
Nora's face turned pale with fright, and she immediately wrapped her arms around herself in defense.
"What do you think you're doing?" she demanded.
Isaac smirked. "Didn't you ask for company in bed? I'm just fulfilling your request. How am I out of line?"
Nora was speechless.
She couldn't possibly admit that she had tried to seduce him to provoke his anger, hoping he'd get rid of her, could she?
Isaac lay down beside her. He took her arm and pulled her close, letting her head rest on his.
"Just sleep. The doctor said you need rest to heal quickly," he said quietly.
Nora shivered and looked at him in surprise.
"That's it? We're just going to sleep?" she asked in disbelief.
Isaac mockingly replied, "What else did you have in mind?"
A flush crept across Nora's cheeks, and she looked visibly embarrassed.
She thought when he took her back to the room, he had other intentions.
"Your earlier mention of 'sleep,' it wasn't a euphemism, was it?" Isaac asked in mock surprise.
Nora's cheeks were even hotter now, and she blinked guiltily.
"Surprising to see such desperation from you. Even in pain, your mind is on those matters," he teased.
Nora was so embarrassed she could only bury her face in the covers. She was unable to look at him.
However, Isaac gripped her arm and pulled her up, giving her no place to hide.
"Nora, while I do promise to look after you and follow your instructions during your recovery, that does not include selling my body," he said firmly.
"You can ask me to sleep next to you, but you can't make me make love to you."
Isaac was serious.
Nora bit her lip, her face red as she gathered her courage to look at him. "What if I insisted on it? You said you would do as I ask. That means you can't refuse any request I make, including sleeping with you. If you don't agree, that's a breach of your promise, and I won't need your care anymore. You'll have to let me go home right away!"
Isaac frowned, clearly displeased with her demand.
Nora felt a secret thrill.
Perfect, she thought. Break the promise and let her go!
After a long moment, Isaac seemed to make up his mind, adopting a resigned expression. "I've always kept my word. Since I promised, I can't break it. Fine, I agree to your request, and I'll satisfy you now."
As he spoke, his hands were already moving over Nora's body.
"Stop it!" Nora cried out in shock, her hands shooting forward to push him away.
She clenched her teeth, her face flushed with anger as she spoke, "I don't want to sleep with you anymore."
Isaac's lips descended upon hers, silencing her words and trapping them inside her mouth.
To prevent further discomfort to her injured shoulder, he gently secured both of her hands, rendering her unable to move.
Nora's heart raced her mind in turmoil.
How had things escalated to this point?
Isaac's kisses trailed downward.
Free from his lips, Nora gasped for air.
She tried to push him off, but her hands were pinned down. She was immobilized.
A sense of urgency consumed Nora.
She couldn't let things go any further with Isaac.
They are divorced now.
Besides, he had insulted her, claimed she was disgusting, and only humiliated her.
Even the day after they were drugged by their grandfather in an attempt to reconcile them, he had taken Kalista to the same bed just to erase the scents and memories of their own intimacy.
If they were intimate tonight, would he turn around and tell Kalista that being with Nora was revolting?
A wave of desolation washed over Nora.
Through trembling lips and clenched teeth, she softly called out, "Mortimer."
She felt the man above her go rigid at the sound.
The warmth in his aura turned cold and sinister.
The room's previously charged atmosphere vanished in an instant.
Isaac propped himself up.
His profound gaze, gleaming with a predatory coldness, bore down on her as he gritted his teeth and demanded, "What did you just call me?"
Nora halted, as if a sudden realization of her mistake washed over her; she hastily apologized, "I'm sorry. I was confused, my mind wasn't working properly, and it was careless of me to say the wrong name."
As she explained, the tension in Isaac grew more dangerous.
Bloodshot eyes and seething rage consumed him.
The name that had slipped out in her moment of frenzy must have been the one she truly yearned for, right?
She had always claimed her relationship with Mortimer was nothing but innocent.
Was this what innocence looked like?
During that year abroad with Mortimer, they must have been sharing a bed every day for her to reflexively call out his name at such a moment.
Anger clashed with his reason.
Isaac's gaze darkened as he sneered, "Lucky for me, you said the wrong name, or I might have mistaken you for Kalista. That night we were drugged by grandpa, I touched you only because I saw Kalista in you. The next day, when I woke up and realized it was you, I was so disgusted I couldn't eat all day. Well, good thing I cut my losses in time, or else I'd lose my appetite tomorrow, too."
He used hurtful words to mask his anger.
After saying that, he got out of bed with a chill emanating from him as he left the room.
Nora felt a pang in her heart. It was like a needle prick.
She bit down on her teeth, fighting to keep her emotions in check.
It turned out he'd only touched her that night because he mistook her for Kalista.
Not long after, a knock came at the door.
Nora took a deep breath and asked with a heavy voice, "What is it?"
From outside, a respectful voice of a maid replied, "Mrs. Foster, Isaac asked you to get ready and come out of your room to rest in the guestroom. Kalista will be coming soon, and they'll need the master bedroom for the night."
Nora's eyes widened in disbelief.
Was Isaac actually planning to have Kalista spend the night with him?
She felt so stifled she could barely breathe, a chill overtaking her whole body, causing her to tremble uncontrollably.
Even though she knew Isaac and Kalista had been involved before.
But hearing that Isaac intended to bring Kalista into the room she had slept in for three years, she couldn't control her emotions.
