Chapter 450: The Last Time Trusting Him
In the hospital, after the doctor finished examining Magnus, he carried him to the ward, hooked him up to an IV, and then looked at the anxious Nora.
"You don't look like you're struggling to make ends meet, so how did you let the kid go hungry to the point of fainting?"
Nora's face was complicated, and she awkwardly tugged at the corner of her mouth. "He was throwing a tantrum and refused to eat."
The doctor sighed, "The child is so young. You should give in to what he wants. How could you let him starve to the point of fainting?"
"Although you shouldn't spoil the child, you also shouldn't be too extreme in your discipline."
"He is at a critical age for growth and development. If he doesn't get enough nutrition, it won't just affect his body; it could harm his brain development too."
"And he wasn't eating, yet you gave him stomach medicine. Taking meds on an empty stomach can really upset his stomach. Do you want him to develop stomach problems at such a young age?"
"Be more careful in the future. The kid may throw tantrums because he doesn't understand, but you're an adult. Do you not understand either? Are you going to stubbornly go against him?"
Nora was blushing with embarrassment but didn't dare to argue back.
She also felt she was in the wrong.
"Take good care of him. When he wakes up and the IV is finished, you can take him home."
"When you get home, don't give him overly nutritious food right away. His stomach won't be able to handle it after not eating for so long. Start with something light for a day or two before returning to a normal diet."
Nora nodded, "Thank you, doctor."
After the doctor left, Nora sat by the bed, looking at Magnus's thin cheeks and pale lips.
Her heart ached deeply, and she felt a profound sense of helplessness.
She thought the child's willpower was weak and that he would give up soon.
She didn't expect that he would stubbornly starve himself to the point of fainting.
What should she do?
Should she give in to let him meet Mortimer?
She didn't want the two children to have any contact with Mortimer. She was worried that Mortimer would hurt her children again.
But if she didn't agree, what if Magnus continued to throw tantrums and refused to eat?
She really didn't know what to do.
As the nutrients from the IV entered his body, Magnus's physical condition gradually improved.
He woke up.
"Magnus, you're finally awake. You scared me to death." Nora's nose tingled, and tears welled up in her eyes.
Magnus looked around blankly, and finally, his gaze fell on the IV in his hand.
He reached out, trying to pull out the IV.
"Magnus, what are you doing?" Nora hurriedly stopped him. "Your body is very weak right now. You need the IV to replenish nutrients. You can't pull it out, or you won't recover, and you'll feel very uncomfortable."
Magnus started to struggle, seemingly determined to pull out the IV.
His strength was no match for Nora's, so he couldn't break free from her grip.
But because he kept struggling, the needle started to backflow.
Nora agreed helplessly, "I promise you, I'll let you see Mortimer."
Magnus immediately stopped struggling and weakly voiced, "Call Uncle Mortimer now."
Nora nodded.
She took out her phone and dialed Mortimer's number.
Soon, the call connected.
Mortimer's voice came through with delight, "Nora, is that you? I can't believe you called me. I'm so happy."
Nora said in a low voice, "Do you have time now?"
Mortimer chuckled, "As long as you need me, I always have time."
Nora pressed her lips together, "Can you come to the hospital? Magnus wants to see you."
Mortimer pretended not to know, "Which hospital? Weren't you at the vacation resort?"
Nora replied, "Yes, we came back to the city a few days ago. I'll send you the hospital address. Please come as soon as you can."
Mortimer nodded, "Okay."
Nora hung up the phone and sent the hospital address to Mortimer.
Half an hour later, the door to the ward was pushed open.
Mortimer walked in.
"Nora, what's wrong with Magnus?"
Nora looked at Mortimer with a complicated expression and said flatly, "He was throwing a hunger strike and fainted."
Mortimer looked surprised, "Why was he on a hunger strike?"
Nora brushed it off, "It's nothing, just some small matters."
She didn't tell Mortimer the real reason.
Saying it out loud would make things more awkward between her and Mortimer.
Mortimer didn't press further.
He walked to the bedside and looked gently at Magnus, "Magnus, I'm sorry, I used to treat you poorly. Can you forgive me?"
Magnus shook his head, "I don't blame Uncle Mortimer."
Mortimer patted Magnus's head, "Magnus is so kind. I need to learn from you."
"Take good care of your health. Don't joke around with your health anymore."
Magnus looked at Mortimer with longing, "As long as Uncle Mortimer stays with me, I'll eat on time every day. When I can't see Uncle Mortimer, I feel sad and can't eat."
Mortimer smiled, "As long as your mommy agrees, I can stay with you every day."
Magnus turned to look at Nora.
Nora's face looked a bit unpleasant, but to prevent Magnus from harming his body, she could only agree.
"Okay, if you want to see him, you can contact him every day. But you have to eat and take your medicine obediently. You can't harm your body."
Magnus nodded obediently, "Okay."
Mortimer and Nora stayed with Magnus until he finished the IV and then took them home.
When they got home, Soren was curled up on the couch watching TV.
The TV volume was turned up high, as if to give herself some courage.
Seeing them return, Soren didn't even have time to put on her shoes. She jumped off the couch and ran towards them with her short legs.
"Mommy, you're finally back. I was so scared."
Soren hugged Nora's leg, and tears instantly fell.
Nora picked Soren up and tenderly wiped her tears, "Don't be scared. I'm back."
"Your brother suddenly fainted, and I rushed to take him to the hospital, so I forgot to bring you. I'm sorry."
When she left, Soren was taking a nap. She was in such a hurry to take Magnus to the hospital that she didn't tell Soren.
When Soren woke up and called her, she told Soren that she and Magnus were at the hospital and asked her to stay home obediently and not go out.
Soren agreed very obediently.
But she was actually very scared.
As soon as Soren saw her return, she couldn't help but cry.
Nora held Soren and comforted her for a long time before she stopped crying.
After Soren stopped crying, she noticed Mortimer was also there and said excitedly, "Uncle Mortimer, you finally came to see us."
She started crying again, "Uncle Mortimer, what have you been busy with? You haven't come to see me and Magnus for so long."
Mortimer pinched her cheek and chuckled, "I'll come to see you often from now on."
Soren sweetly said, "Then it's a deal, Uncle Mortimer. No lying!"
Mortimer nodded with a smile, promising.
Soren was very happy and insisted that Mortimer play with her.
"Magnus, come play with us too!" Soren didn't forget to call Magnus.
Magnus shook his head, "I don't feel well, I want to rest."
Mortimer explained, "Your brother just got back from the hospital, and he's still recoverimg. Let him rest well and join us when he's better."
Soren said, "Okay, Magnus, rest well."
Soren pulled Mortimer to play games with her.
It was already evening, and Nora went to the kitchen, planning to make some porridge for Magnus.
For her and Soren's dinner, she planned to order takeout.
Making porridge wouldn't go wrong, but with other dishes, everything she cooked tasted the same. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't appetizing either.
So, she didn't want to compromise her and Soren's appetite and decided to order takeout.
Just as she started making the porridge and hadn't ordered the takeout yet, Isaac arrived.
Isaac walked into the living room and saw Mortimer playing with Soren. His face immediately darkened.
He quickly walked over, picked up Soren, and looked at Mortimer with hostility, "What are you doing here? Get out!"
Mortimer smiled, "Nora said Magnus wanted to see me, so I came."
"This is Nora's home. I was invited by Nora. If you want me to leave, you'll need Nora to say so. You don't have the right to make me leave."
Isaac's face turned terrifyingly dark.
Soren timidly voiced, "Daddy, why are you so mean to Uncle Mortimer? Please don't fight with Uncle Mortimer. I like Daddy, and I like Uncle Mortimer too. I don't want you to fight."
Isaac suppressed his anger, gently patted Soren's back, and placed her on the couch.
Isaac glanced at Magnus, who was sitting on the couch watching TV, his expression unreadable.
In the end, he didn't say anything, put Soren down, and went to the kitchen.
"Why did you call Mortimer here?" Isaac asked, looking at Nora's back.
Nora was startled by the sudden voice.
She turned to look at Isaac, calmed herself, "Magnus fainted from hunger today. I took him to the hospital for an IV. When he woke up, he still wanted to throw a tantrum and tried to pull out the needle."
"I was worried about his health, so I called Mortimer to calm him down."
She sighed softly after speaking.
She felt helpless too.
Magnus was her biological son.
After knowing that Mortimer had intentionally hurt Magnus, she was angrier than anyone and didn't want them to have any contact.
But Magnus kept insisting on seeing Mortimer.
If she didn't let him, he wouldn't eat or drink. He even fainted from hunger and still refused treatment.
If she continued to oppose Magnus, she felt he might really starve himself to death.
Isaac was furious, gritting his teeth, "Did Mortimer hypnotize him? He was seriously injured by him, yet he still likes him so much, even to the point of harming his own body just to see him!"
Nora's expression darkened, "It's all my fault. If I could have stayed with them when they were young, maybe they would rely on me the most, and they wouldn't like Mortimer so much."
Isaac's eyes darkened.
Nora wasn't with the children because she was with him.
Isaac collected his thoughts, "The past is behind us. Don't blame yourself too much. We'll spend more time with them going forward, and they'll come to love and trust us the most. They're still young and can change easily."
"It's not Magnus's fault for wanting to see Mortimer. Mortimer took care of them for three years, and even if Mortimer had ulterior motives, he must have treated them well on the surface. It's normal for them to have a good impression of him."
"For now, let's go along with Magnus. He needs to focus on recovering first. His health is the most important thing, and any misstep could lead to regrets we can't undo."
Nora nodded, "Okay, I contacted Mortimer because I was afraid something would happen to him."
"The doctor also told me today that children can't be starved like this. It will affect his physical development."
She paused and then continued, "But I'm still a bit worried. There are times when I can't watch them. I'm afraid something might happen when I'm not around."
She spoke very tactfully, not directly saying she was worried Mortimer might harm the children when she wasn't looking.
Isaac's mood instantly improved.
Nora was wary of Mortimer, which meant she hadn't forgiven Mortimer because of Magnus.
He said, "Tomorrow, I'll arrange for two people to help you take care of the children."
Nora nodded, "Okay."
She couldn't take care of two children by herself.
For example, today, if she had to go out, there would be no one to look after the children.
Seeing that Nora's attitude towards Mortimer hadn't changed, Isaac was in a very good mood.
He started preparing dinner in the kitchen.
Isaac even pulled Nora to stay and help him, not letting her go out to see Mortimer.
When dinner was ready, Isaac said to Mortimer with a half-smile, "The kitchenware at home is too small, so I could only make enough for four people. There's none for you. If you want to eat, you can have some of our leftovers."
Mortimer didn't get angry.
He smiled and said to Nora, "Nora, I'll leave now. I'll come back to see you tomorrow."
Nora nodded lightly, "Okay, be careful on your way. Thank you for today."
Mortimer smiled, "Your matters are my matters. No need to be so formal."
Nora didn't respond.
Mortimer said goodbye to the two children and then turned to leave.
Nora thought for a moment, then stood up and followed him out.
"Nora, why did you come out?" Mortimer turned around in surprise when he heard footsteps behind him.
Nora closed the door and said to Mortimer, "I have a few words to say to you."
Mortimer smiled and asked, "What do you want to say? I'm listening."
Nora looked seriously into Mortimer's eyes and slowly said, "Mortimer, this is the last time I trust you. I hope you won't betray my trust."
"If you ever hurt Magnus or Soren again, I won't forgive you."
"Even if they forgive you and threaten me with their lives to see you, I won't compromise. I'd rather find a way to make them lose their memory than let them contact you again!"
Mortimer's expression became serious, and he said guiltily, "I'm sorry, Nora. I know my past actions have made you biased against me, and I won't make excuses for what I've done."
"But I can swear that I will never hurt Magnus and Soren again."
"If I break this oath, I'll give my life to you!"
He had hurt Barrett, not Magnus.
So, he wasn't breaking his oath.
