Chapter 417: So Her Lies Were That Obvious
Mortimer smiled, "Magnus is like my son. I will take good care of him. Don't worry."
Nora forced to smile and nodded at him gratefully.
Then she reluctantly glanced at Barrett before leaving the ward.
Barrett kept watching her, and as he saw her turn to leave, his eyes grew more anxious.
But he couldn't speak or move; he could only watch her leave, tears of grievance and worry streaming down his face.
He didn't hate Nora; he wanted her to stay with him, but unfortunately, Nora couldn't understand his meaning.
Mortimer looked at the closed door and didn't immediately speak to Barrett.
It wasn't until he heard Nora's footsteps gradually fade away and finally disappear that Mortimer withdrew his gaze and looked at Barrett on the bed with a smile.
"Barrett, no, let's call you Magnus to avoid anyone overhearing and suspecting your identity."
Mortimer's voice was gentle, but Barrett's face was full of fear.
Mortimer looked at Barrett tenderly, "Magnus, don't be afraid. I love you; I won't hurt you."
Tears streamed down Barrett's face.
Just a while ago, Mortimer almost smothered him. Is this what he calls not wanting to hurt him?
If Nora hadn't arrived in time, Mortimer definitely wouldn't have spared him, and he would be dead by now!
He never expected that the usually gentle Mortimer would be so cruel as to try to kill him.
He felt deeply hurt, and more tears flowed.
It seemed as if Mortimer could read Barrett's mind. He chuckled softly and wiped Barrett's tears, "I was just joking with you earlier; I didn't really want to hurt you."
"If I wanted to kill you, that would be a piece of cake."
"If I didn't like you, I wouldn't have taken care of you when you were abandoned by your parents at birth. Why would I save you and raise you?"
A struggle flashed in Barrett's eyes.
What Mortimer said seemed to make sense.
If Mortimer didn't love him, he wouldn't have raised him, nor would he have treated him so well.
But Mortimer deliberately let Isaac kick him into serious injury, and he just tried to smother him. These are facts.
Barrett was young and couldn't understand what was going on. He didn't know if Mortimer loved him or hated him, and his face was full of confusion.
Mortimer continued, "Magnus, I still love you."
"Your injury was an accident; I didn't mean it."
"Earlier, I was just joking with you; I didn't really want to hurt you."
"I raised you myself; I've long considered you my own child. How could I bear to hurt you?"
Barrett stared blankly at Mortimer, unsure whether to believe him.
Mortimer uttered gently, "Magnus, your injury and everything that happened earlier are our little secrets. You can't tell anyone, not even your mom, Isaac, or Soren. Okay?"
Barrett couldn't respond; he just looked at Mortimer.
Mortimer's voice grew even gentler, "Magnus, I gave you a second life. Your life belongs to me, so you should listen to me. Otherwise, you won't be a good child."
"Bad children don't get love; no one likes bad children."
Panic appeared in Barrett's eyes.
If he wasn't good, would Isaac and Nora not love him?
Mortimer added, "Magnus, if you agree to my request, blink three times."
Barrett bit his lip and slowly blinked three times.
Mortimer raised him and gave him a second life; so he should listen to Mortimer.
His life was saved by Mortimer, so even if Mortimer wanted to kill him, it wouldn't be wrong.
Mortimer patted Barrett's head in satisfaction, "Good boy. When you get better, I'll take you out to play."
Nora went to Sophia's room.
Sophia was still sleeping.
Nora sat on the sofa in the room, feeling very distressed when she thought of Magnus's frightened and terrified eyes when he looked at her.
She wondered if Magnus would forgive her if she made it up to him in the future.
"Nora, didn't you go to see Magnus and Soren? Why are you here? You don't have to stay with me all the time; I can be alone."
Sophia's sleep was light, and she heard some noise when Nora entered the room.
When she opened her eyes, she saw that Nora had indeed come in.
Nora collected her thoughts, got up, and sat by the bed, "I just went to see them. Are you not used to being here? Why did you wake up so easily?"
Sophia said with a wry smile, "Look at the time. I'm not a pig who only eats and sleeps. I won't wake up so easily at night."
Nora awkwardly touched her nose.
Sophia suddenly asked, "Nora, be honest with me. Are Magnus and Soren your children?"
Nora felt a moment of tension and looked at Sophia in surprise.
Sophia smiled, "No need to be so surprised. The way you look at them is full of motherly love; it's hard not to notice."
"Besides, you're way too involved with them. You not only take care of them personally but also take them out to play and find them such a good kindergarten. I don't believe they're just your so-called friend's children."
"And come on, we've known each other for years. Wouldn't I know if you had other good friends?"
"Even if you did hide other good friends from me, she wouldn't just cut off contact with her own children, right?"
"Magnus and Soren have been with you, and I've never seen them miss their mother. For two three-year-olds, that just doesn't add up unless their mother is right there with them. Only then would they not cry for their mom."
Nora awkwardly tugged at the corner of her mouth, "I didn't expect the flaws to be so obvious. I thought I hid it well."
Sophia added, "You're the person involved; it's normal not to notice."
"By the way, are they your and Mortimer's children?" Sophia suddenly asked.
It's not surprising she guessed this.
Because when Nora left after a fight with Isaac, she went to the hospital to abort Isaac's kids. Sophia was there and saw Nora throw the bloody embryo at Isaac.
She still remembered Isaac's look of despair and sorrow.
After aborting the child, Nora went abroad with Mortimer and only returned a year later to marry Isaac.
Those two children would have been born during that year.
So Magnus and Soren would be Nora and Mortimer's children, born during that year.
Sophia's expression became somewhat subtle.
She never expected that Nora would actually be with Mortimer and have two children.
If Nora and Mortimer already had children, why did she come back to marry Isaac?
Did she realize after being with Mortimer that Isaac was better, so she came back to find Isaac?
Thinking of this, Sophia's expression became even more subtle.
Even though Nora was her good friend, if her guess was correct, she also felt that Nora was somewhat unethical.
