Chapter 553 He Will Never Be Happy in This Lifetime
Mortimer's lips were pressed so tightly they turned white, and his hands were clenched into fists.
After a long while, he finally spoke in a hoarse, dry voice, "These are just your assumptions. You can't accuse me of doing those things without evidence. That's too unfair to me."
Seeing him still trying to argue, the anger in Nora's eyes couldn't be hidden.
"You really are incorrigible. Even when exposed, you still act like you're wronged and aggrieved. You make me sick!"
"Fine, let's set aside my assumptions. You drugged Isaac and conspired with Amara against him. Do you think saying you did it because you loved me too much can excuse your actions?"
"Mortimer, you always dare to act but not to take responsibility. You almost killed Magnus and framed Isaac, and you said it was because you loved me too much. Now, again, you say it's because you loved me too much. Has loving me become your excuse for doing bad things?"
"Because you love me, you can endlessly do bad things, and it's never your fault. It's my fault for not recognizing your goodness and not choosing you, so you had no choice but to do bad things, right?"
Mortimer's face was full of panic, and he shook his head, his face pale, "No, I never thought that way."
But his denial was weak and unconvincing.
Nora sneered and continued, "You did those things not because you loved me, but because you couldn't stand losing to Isaac. To satisfy your despicable sense of competition and jealousy, you kept scheming against Isaac. To plot against him, you even repeatedly targeted innocent children!"
Mortimer's lips were pressed tightly, but he couldn't say a word.
Nora took a deep breath, suppressing her anger, and said coldly, "You deliberately made Magnus sick to set up this trap. There must be a cure for his illness. Give me the medicine."
Mortimer gave a bitter smile and shook his head, "Magnus's illness really wasn't my doing. I don't have any medicine."
"Nora, you overestimate me. How could I have the ability to get a drug that even Rhys couldn't detect and give it to Magnus?"
Nora swayed and thought, 'It isn't his doing? No antidote? Then Magnus is really beyond saving?'
Mortimer wanted to support Nora, but she quickly stepped back, avoiding his touch as if he were a plague.
At the same time, she raised her hand and slapped him hard.
The sound was crisp and loud.
A clear handprint instantly appeared on his face, and a trace of hurt appeared in his eyes.
Nora said coldly, "I will continue to investigate this matter. If I find out that there's something fishy about Magnus's illness, I will make you pay with your life!"
"You've repeatedly hurt the people I care about. If it weren't for Mr. Elder Radcliffe being good to me, I would have killed you!"
"From now on, I won't forgive you on Mr. Elder Radcliffe's account. We are no longer friends, and I will never forgive you for what you did to Magnus!"
Mortimer's pupils contracted, and the panic in his eyes became more apparent.
Having said everything she needed to, Nora didn't want to stay any longer and immediately turned to leave.
"Nora, don't go. Please don't break off with me!" Mortimer quickly stepped forward and grabbed her wrist before she could get into the car.
"I promise I won't have any delusions about you anymore. I'll just be your friend, like before, helping you with your troubles. I swear I won't do anything wrong to get you again. Please give me another chance, okay?"
Nora said coldly, "I already gave you a chance last time, but you didn't repent. Your methods became more and more vicious. I won't make the same mistake twice."
"I can't afford a friend like you. My family and friends don't have enough lives for you to harm."
Mortimer's eyes reddened, and he subconsciously tightened his grip on her wrist, "Why can you forgive Isaac time and time again but not forgive me once?"
"I've been better to you than he has. We've known each other longer. Why can't you be fair to me? I don't ask for your favoritism, just that you treat me and him equally. Is such a simple request too much for you?"
He looked hurt, with a trace of unwillingness in his eyes.
"Isaac ignored you for three years and treated you harshly for three years, but you can forgive him. Why can't you forgive me?"
Nora said solemnly, "Because when he treated me badly, he openly said he disliked me and never targeted my family and friends. But you, on the other hand, acted one way in front of me and another behind my back, almost killing my son. You kept using schemes and tricks against me. That's the difference between you two!"
"Even if he's not a good person, he's openly bad, while you're a hypocrite. Openly bad people can still get some respect, but hypocrites are shunned by everyone. You noble families should understand better than me that hypocrites are not to be trusted, right?"
Mortimer's lips were pressed tightly, and his eyes were full of pain.
He had been by her side for so many years, step by step falling into the abyss for her, only to be labeled a "hypocrite" by her in the end.
He felt as if all the blood in his body had frozen, and the world before him lost its color, turning gray.
He thought, this time, he had completely lost her. He didn't even have the qualification to be her friend anymore. She would never forgive him again.
He would never be happy again in this lifetime.
His heart ached so much he couldn't breathe, and his limbs felt weak. When Nora shook him off, he couldn't hold onto her, watching helplessly as she got into the car and drove away.
He reached out to grab her but only caught a handful of air.
He opened his mouth, but he couldn't even say a word to ask her to stay.
The car quickly disappeared from his sight. He closed his eyes in despair, and two lines of tears slid down his cheeks.
A few girls walking by downstairs saw his lonely and cold figure and couldn't help but be attracted, feeling pity for him. They kindly approached to ask if he needed help.
Mortimer said nothing and walked away in a daze.
He was clearly so popular that even strangers would feel sorry for him and be attracted to him. Why wouldn't Nora give him a second glance?
He wasn't bad. There were many girls in school who liked him. Why couldn't Nora be like them and like him too?
Where did he go wrong?
Nora drove slowly, and by the time she returned to The Porter Manor, her emotions had calmed down.
When she got out of the car at The Porter Manor's entrance, she noticed a car following hers. The driver was Isaac.
Nora looked at Isaac in surprise, "Why were you following me? When did you start following me?"
Isaac said, "About twenty minutes after you left, I caught up with you and have been following you since."
Nora's face stiffened, "So, you saw me meet with Mortimer?"
