Chapter 176 If He Dies, I Won't Live Either."
Nora's eyes turned cold as she eyed Mortimer. "Why are you asking? Do you want Isaac dead?"
Mortimer chuckled. "Why would you think that?"
"Isaac's my rock. I'd take any hit for him. I'd never wish him harm, let alone death," Nora said earnestly.
Nora's expression stayed grim. Lately, Mortimer's actions had made her trust him less. She was still grateful for his help over the years but couldn't shake her doubts about his intentions.
Nora stared at Mortimer blankly. He kept a faint smile, looking calm and composed.
After a few seconds, Nora said seriously, "If Isaac dies, I'll go with him."
Mortimer's pupils contracted, and his smile froze, anger bubbling inside him. "Do you still love him that much?" he asked instinctively.
"Yes," Nora nodded firmly. "No matter what he's done to me, if he hadn't saved me when I fell off the cliff, I would've died in the flood that night. No matter his reasons, he's my lifesaver."
Mortimer asked, "If I had saved you, would you treat me the same way?"
Nora replied, "There aren't that many 'ifs' in this world."
Mortimer lowered his gaze, hiding the darkness in his eyes. When Nora fell off the cliff, he had thought about jumping after her to save her. He knew the sooner he acted, the better her chances. But he hesitated and ended up giving Isaac the opportunity.
"I need to go to the hotel," Nora said, walking around Mortimer, ready to leave.
Mortimer quickly caught up and grabbed her wrist. "Let me take you," he said softly.
Nora looked at him warily.
Mortimer smiled. "Don't worry, I won't cause any trouble. I'm just here to help you."
Nora said, "It's not that I don't trust you; I just don't want you to offend Isaac because of me."
She didn't have much time left. She wasn't afraid of offending Isaac and incurring his wrath. But Mortimer was different. He had already made an enemy of Isaac. If he offended Isaac again, he'd be even more targeted.
"If I was afraid of offending Isaac, I wouldn't have stood by your side all these years," Mortimer said. "Don't worry, Isaac won't do anything to me. Besides, are you sure you can get into the hotel by yourself? Even if you do, can you stop their engagement?"
Nora fell silent. Without an invitation, she wasn't sure she could get in. Even if she did, she wasn't sure she could stop the engagement ceremony.
After thinking for a moment, Nora accepted Mortimer's help. She got into his car. Mortimer started the car and drove slowly.
"Have you thought about how to stop them?" Mortimer asked.
Nora shook her head. "Not yet. If necessary, I'll just knock out Kalista."
Mortimer disapproved. "That's not a good idea. Even if you stop them tonight, they can still get engaged once Kalista recovers. Besides, you want to separate Isaac and Kalista completely, not just disrupt their engagement, right?"
Nora sighed. "Yeah, but I don't know how to break them up."
"Especially now that Kalista's pregnant with Isaac's child. How could he abandon her?" Thinking about the baby made Nora's head hurt even more.
"He even asked me to get rid of Kalista's baby. He doesn't want anyone to have Isaac's child. I don't think I can do that," Nora said warily.
Kalista had done many terrible things, and Nora had no problem dealing with her. But harming an innocent baby? She couldn't do it. Maybe because she had kids herself, she was soft-hearted towards children.
Mortimer squinted, a deep meaning flashing in his eyes.
"This isn't the way to the hotel. Where are you taking me?" Nora suddenly realized the car wasn't headed towards the engagement hotel.
Mortimer said, "My invitation letter is at home. I asked Alaric to bring it over. In the meantime, let's change our clothes. Dressed like this, they might not let us in."
Nora looked down at her paint-stained clothes and accepted Mortimer's suggestion. After doing her makeup and dressing up, Nora came out to find Mortimer had changed into a black suit. His tie was white, matching her dress. They looked like a couple.
Nora frowned, feeling a bit uncomfortable.
Mortimer smiled at her. "Alaric has brought the invitation. Let's go."
Nora nodded. Time was tight, and even if she wasn't happy with the dress, she didn't have time to change.
Half an hour later, the car stopped at the hotel entrance. Nora got out with Mortimer. The hotel entrance was bustling with activity. The Porter family heir's engagement had attracted the elite of Aridonia. Many people had already arrived.
"Let's go in," Mortimer said, smiling at Nora.
"Okay."
Mortimer slightly bent his arm, intending for Nora to hold it. But she walked ahead alone. Mortimer paused, then put his hand down, pretending nothing had happened as he caught up with her. At the entrance, he handed over the invitation, and they entered the hotel together.
People around them recognized Nora and Mortimer, casting strange looks their way and gossiping.
"Isn't that Isaac's ex-wife? Why is she here? Isn't tonight Isaac and Kalista's engagement? Isn't she afraid of being embarrassed?"
"And she came with Mortimer. Is she openly dating Mortimer after the divorce?"
"She betrayed Isaac for Mortimer back then. Now she's here with Mortimer at Isaac's engagement. Is she here to provoke Isaac?"
"Wait, didn't the news during Katie's birthday party say Nora had a new boyfriend? That wasn't Mortimer. So why is she with Mortimer now?"
"Maybe she broke up with that boyfriend and went back to Mortimer."
"Her private life is a mess, always with different men. What a slut."
"Stay away from her."
Nora clenched her fists, her face darkening.
At that moment, a deep, icy voice came from behind, "Who invited these foul-mouthed people to the party?"
Everyone was startled by the voice. The people who had been talking looked at the speaker in fear.
"Isaac..."
Before they could finish, Isaac coldly ordered, "Throw them out, and don't let them into any Porter family establishment ever again!"
