Chapter 494: Trust Your Instincts
It was an international call from Sophia.
Nora answered it.
As soon as the call connected, Sophia's concerned voice came through, "Nora, what on earth happened? You seem really off today!"
Even though they were just chatting through text, for someone familiar, Sofia could tell from the way Nora expressed herself that something was different.
Nora was still being perfunctory, "I'm really fine, you're making a big deal out of nothing, you even called me."
"Don't lie to me!" Sophia interrupted her angrily, "I can hear it in your voice. You sound so down—how can you say you're fine?"
"If you were truly fine, you would have been thrilled to hear from me, especially since it's been ages since we last talked."
Nora was silent.
Sophia anxiously pressed on, "Tell me, what's going on?"
Nora didn't know how to start.
After all, it was just her suspicion without any concrete evidence.
Sophia was getting really worried, "Are we still friends or not? If something's wrong, just tell me. If it's inconvenient to talk to me, just say so, and I won't keep asking!"
At this moment, Nora saw Isaac coming out of the kitchen.
Nora hesitated for a moment, stood up, walked out of the house.
Only after she was in the hallway did she lower her voice and say to Sophia, "I don't know if this really counts as something or if it's just my own suspicion. It's all just baseless doubts—I don't have any proof to back it up."
Sophia replied, "Don't worry about that for now, if you can tell me, then just say it."
Nora thought for a while, then slowly began, "Last night, Isaac went to the bathroom outside the living room in the middle of the night to take a call. At first, I thought he did it to avoid disturbing me and the kids."
"But I accidentally overheard him talking to a woman, and it seemed like she was pregnant. He was telling her not to overthink and to take care of her baby."
"His words themselves weren't a big deal, but you know him, he doesn't have female friends. It couldn't be a friend's wife, and none of his relatives would call him in the middle of the night to confide in him."
"I really can't figure out what kind of relationship a pregnant woman who calls him in the middle of the night has with him."
Before Sophia could respond, Nora continued.
"During dinner just now, his phone rang a few times, and he just hung up. Later, when I told him to answer it, he went outside to take the call, probably to avoid me hearing the conversation."
"I have a feeling the person who called him during dinner is the same one from last night."
Nora suddenly pulled at her hair in frustration, "I also wonder if I'm overthinking it, Isaac doesn't seem like that kind of scumbag."
Sophia said seriously: "Nora, don't doubt your intuition. If he's making you feel suspicious, there's definitely something off. Whether he's cheating or not, his behavior is still a red flag."
Nora was silent.
Sophia asked, "Have you checked his phone?"
Nora shook her head.
Realizing Sophia couldn't see her, Nora said, "I tried to check it just now, but his lock screen password has changed, I couldn't unlock his phone."
Sophia exclaimed, fuming, "He even changed his phone password? That's a guilty conscience, he's deliberately trying to hide something from you—what a scumbag!"
Nora said, "Until I have concrete evidence that he's cheating, let's not label him a scumbag."
The corners of Sophia mouth twitched, and she said speechlessly, "At this point, you're still defending him? Would you still think he's innocent if you saw him in bed with another woman but they weren't having sex?"
Nora was silent.
Sophia said angrily. "Isaac may be handsome and excellent, but you're pretty great yourself. Remember how many guys were after you back in the day? You were the total dream girl for so many."
"You deserve to have higher standards in a partner—don’t settle for less. Do you really want to end up regretting it later?"
Nora laughed, "Sophia, you've changed a lot. I used to be the one telling you not to give your all to men and to treat yourself better. Now it's your turn to tell me."
Sophia said speechlessly, "You can still laugh?"
"After everything I've been through, if I haven't figured things out by now, I don't deserve to call myself human."
"Alright, enough about me, talking about him just makes me feel worse."
Nora suggested, "Should I just have a straightforward conversation with Isaac? Ask him directly who that pregnant woman is and what their deal is?"
Sophia shot back, "Are you stupid? If you ask him outright, do you really think he'll tell you the truth?"
"Men are best at lying!"
After being hurt, Sophia was filled with hostility towards the entire male gender.
Nora nodded, "You're right, I'll keep observing."
Sophia comforted, "Just pretend nothing happened and keep an eye on him for a bit. If he's up to something, he’ll eventually mess up."
Nora nodded, "Okay."
Sophia's voice softened, "Nora, if Isaac really did something to hurt you, don't lose hope. No matter what, you still have me, I'll always support you!"
"If you need, I can stay with you forever!"
Nora felt a warmth in her heart and smiled, "Don't worry, I might be sad, but I won't lose hope."
She still had Magnus and Soren, she couldn't afford to lose hope.
After going through so much, encountering Isaac's cheating, she would still feel hurt, but not as much as before.
Her life focus was no longer entirely on Isaac.
She still had Magnus and Soren, her work, and her friends.
Even if love was gone, her life would still go on.
Nora and Sophia chatted for a while longer, asking about her situation abroad, then hung up and went back inside.
Isaac was already sitting on the couch. Seeing her come back, he asked gloomily, "Why did you go outside to take the call? Who was it?"
Nora replied, "A friend."
Isaac was taken aback.
He felt Nora was deliberately answering like that.
Earlier when she asked him, he said it was a friend calling.
Now she was using the same words on him.
Nora sat down next to Isaac.
Isaac wanted to reach out and hug her, but Nora pushed him away, "Don't mess around, I have work to do."
Isaac asked gloomily, "Didn't you delegate all your work? Why do you still have to handle it yourself?"
Nora said, "There's still some that I need to handle."
Isaac complained, "I work during the day, and only have the evenings to be with you, but you just want to work and ignore me."
Nora said righteously, "A person can't give up their work just for their husband!"
"Don't disturb my work, or don't come over anymore."
Isaac was silent.
