Chapter 256 Mortimer Wanted Them Dead
Mortimer asked, "Nora, you think I'm behind this?"
Nora scoffed, "Why wouldn't I?"
Mortimer let out a bitter laugh. "I thought by always putting you first and helping you out, you'd trust me. Guess I was wrong."
Nora's grip on her phone tightened, her eyes narrowing.
Sure, Mortimer had been good to her. But no matter how nice he was, it didn't erase the shady stuff he'd done.
"Mortimer, I used to trust you completely, thought of you as my best friend. Before I lost my memory, I never imagined you'd plot against me. But what did you do?" Nora's voice was heavy with disappointment.
Mortimer's heart ached, guilt washing over him.
Nora went on, "The more I trusted you, the more it hurt when I found out you betrayed me."
Mortimer opened his mouth but couldn't find the words.
Nora said, "Ever since Magnus and Soren went missing, I've been giving you chances, but you never came clean. I'll never forget what you did for me. I'd give my life for you, no question asked. But you crossed the line when you hurt my kids. No amount of kindness can make up for that. If anyone, even your grandfather or Edmund, hurt my kids, I wouldn't forgive them either!"
Mortimer felt like an invisible hand was choking him, stopping him from speaking.
He knew Nora too well. Magnus and Soren were her everything, so he couldn't admit the truth. He kept lying to cover up the first lie. There was no way he'd confess to his ill intentions towards her children.
"Nora, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have ignored the kids after your accident. I'll help you find them. If I do, I promise to treat them well and never send them away again. I'm sorry, I really didn't mean it. I was terrified you wouldn't wake up. I knew seeing them would bring back too many memories, and I wasn't sure I could bear it. I thought they'd be sad knowing you were in trouble, so I had them sent away."
"Enough!" Nora cut him off, exasperated.
Mortimer said bitterly, "Nora, you still don't believe me? But I'm telling the truth. I've never hurt you. Why won't you believe me!"
Nora said, "After you messed with my memory, made me think you were my lover, and made me forget my kids, how could I ever trust you again? You've made me doubt everyone. Because of your betrayal, I can't trust anyone, not even Elder Radcliffe, who has been so kind to me."
Mortimer's grandfather, Elder, was the first to pull her out of the darkness. Through Elder, she met Isaac's grandfather. And then she met Mortimer, her first real friend.
For years, Nora had placed her complete faith in Mortimer, seeing him as one of her own. But in the end, the person she trusted most did the one thing she could never forgive.
Her faith in him shattered.
When she couldn't find her kids, she was constantly worried about their safety and heartbroken by Mortimer's betrayal.
That pain was even worse than the cruel things Isaac had said to her that night!
"Mortimer, I trusted you with my whole heart. I even questioned myself instead of you. But that trust is gone forever." With that, Nora hung up.
Tears streamed down her face. She covered her mouth to stifle her sobs. Her heart ached deeply.
Love was gone. Friendship was gone too.
She must have done something terrible in a past life for God to take away the two most beautiful feelings she had.
In the dark room, Mortimer slowly lowered the phone from his ear. His eyes were filled with a dark, turbulent light. "Nora, I'm sorry. I didn't want to make you sad."
But what was done was done, and there was no use regretting it now.
Alaric walked in from outside. "Mr. Radcliffe, why don't you turn on the light?" He was about to turn on the light but was stopped by Mortimer.
Mortimer asked, "Did you get rid of those two kids?" After Nora's accident, he had Alaric take Magnus and Soren away. But he never asked Alaric to give them to someone. He wanted them dead!
Magnus and Soren were Isaac's kids. How could he truly love them?
He only pretended to care for them to please Nora.
After Nora's accident, he saw an opportunity to hypnotize Nora and make her forget the past. He didn't want to keep Magnus and Soren around.
If Nora forgot the past, she would naturally forget them too.
What was the point of keeping them?
"They've been taken care of." Alaric lowered his head, his voice weak.
Mortimer instantly sensed something was wrong. He turned to look at Alaric, his clear eyes cold in the darkness. "You didn't kill them."
Alaric immediately knelt down. "I'm sorry. I intended to follow your orders and kill them, then dispose of the bodies, but I couldn't bring myself to do it..."
He did take Magnus and Soren away following Mortimer's order.
But on the way, seeing how adorable Soren was, he couldn't bear to do it.
Moreover, he had watched Magnus and Soren grow up while serving Mortimer.
Alaric's compassion got the better of him, so he found a remote village and had someone there take Magnus and Soren away. They were only three years old. Once taken to the village, they wouldn't be able to leave on their own. In a few years, they would forget the past and be impossible to find.
Alaric thought that this was as good as them being dead.
But he didn't expect Mortimer to ask about them again.
