Chapter 243 Afraid of Her Regaining Memory

Mortimer looked like he'd been hit by a truck. After a few minutes, he finally replied: [Yeah, you can.]

Nora: [Alright, I'll give you one more shot. If Magnus and Soren come back safe, we’ll call it even.]

She had no clue where Magnus and Soren were. Trusting Mortimer was her only option.

Mortimer: [Got it, I won't let you down.]

Nora didn't respond. She tossed and turned in bed, thinking about Magnus and Soren. Sleep didn't come until midnight.

The next day, she slept in until noon. When she went downstairs, she was surprised to see Isaac, the workaholic, hadn't gone to the office.

Thinking back, she realized Isaac hadn't been to work since she got hurt. He'd been by her side the whole time.

Even though she didn't want to see him and kept him out of her room, he still stayed close.

Nora felt nothing about this, maybe even found it a bit funny.

She thought, 'Isaac must really want to fool me again. Not going to work for over half a month? He must be losing a ton of money. Guess getting back at me is more important to him than making money.'

Seeing Nora come downstairs, Isaac put his laptop aside and walked over, looking at her with soft eyes. "Hungry? I made your favorite dishes. Let’s eat." He reached out to hold her hand, but she pulled away.

Nora looked at him coldly, "Mr. Porter, we're not close. Stop trying to get near me. It just freaks me out."

Isaac said, "We're married, closer than anyone!"

Nora shrugged, "But I don't remember. To me, you're just a stranger with bad intentions."

Isaac's eyes dimmed, showing a hint of hurt.

Nora didn't care. She turned and walked to the kitchen.

The servants brought the food to the table.

Nora glanced at the dishes. She could tell Isaac made them. She didn't refuse. No point in making things hard for herself. She just needed to stay clear-headed and not let him get to her.

Halfway through the meal, her long-dormant stomach ache started acting up. She put down her chopsticks, pressed her stomach, and her face turned pale.

Her stomach problems started four years ago when she left Isaac. She was a mess and ended up with stomach issues. Back then, it was just occasional pain.

Five months ago, she went to the hospital for a check-up and was diagnosed with stomach cancer.

The doctor told her she had three months to live. But now, nearly five months had passed, and she was still here.

A wave of pain interrupted Nora's thoughts.

Her painkillers were at her own place. She needed to find a way to get her meds.

But that medicine seemed quite addictive. Before she started taking it, her stomach pain was rare. After she started, the pain came more often. She wondered if it was because she didn't follow the doctor's instructions; the doctor told her to take the medicine daily. But she only took one pill when the pain was unbearable.

Lost in thought, the pain in her stomach eased up a bit.

Nora sat for a while longer, and when she felt better, she walked back to the living room.

Isaac looked at her and asked, "Done?"

Nora nodded. "Yeah, I'm not very hungry. Just a little bit filled me up."

Isaac said, "The kitchen can make food anytime. If you get hungry, just ask the servants to whip something up. No need to wait for mealtime."

Nora nodded. After a pause, she asked, "You said I used to live in Aridonia. Do I have my own place there?"

Isaac's eyes narrowed slightly, and he asked in a deep voice, "Why are you asking all of a sudden?" He suspected that Nora wanted to move out.

Nora said, "I want to visit the places I used to go. Maybe it will help me remember."

Isaac replied, "You have your own house, but you lived here the longest. You stayed with me here for three years and only stayed in your own house for three months. If you want to reconnect with your past, being here with me is enough."

Nora said, "But there doesn't seem to be anything here that belongs to me. The clothes in the wardrobe are all new. My own house should have things I used to use, right?"

Isaac clenched his fists.

Nora didn't buy much when she was here. The few things she had were all taken away during the divorce. Indeed, there weren't many traces of her in this villa.

"Although there are no things of yours here, you lived here for three years. You must be familiar with the environment," Isaac added.

Nora quietly looked at Isaac.

Isaac felt tense under her gaze and asked uncomfortably, "Why are you looking at me like that?"

Nora continued to look at him without speaking.

After a long while, a smile appeared on Nora's face. "Mr. Porter, you actually don't want me to regain my memory, do you?"

Isaac's gaze was deep and intense. He neither admitted nor denied it, "Why do you think that?"

Nora said, "Rhys mentioned several methods to help regain memory, but you never intended to let me try them. You're very proactive about treating my injuries, but you haven't mentioned a word about treating my amnesia. So I think you don't want me to regain my memory."

Isaac's eyes darkened, and he remained silent.

Nora continued to ask, "Before I lost my memory, our relationship wasn't very good, was it?"

"Yes," Isaac denied in a deep voice, "it was. We were very much in love."

Nora shook her head and sneered, "No, our relationship must have been bad, very bad. That's why you don't want me to regain my memory, afraid that if I do, I'll be even more distant from you, right?"

"No, don't make wild guesses!" Isaac still denied it.

Nora, however, smiled more confidently. "It seems I hit the mark. I'm already cold enough to you now, treating you completely like a stranger, yet you still don't want me to regain my memory. If we were really as loving as you say, why wouldn't you help me regain my memory? Unless you know that if I regain my memory, our relationship will become worse than it is now. That's why you're afraid of me regaining my memory."
