Chapter 27 It's on Fire

As the police entered the hospital room, their gaze settled firmly on Kalista.
"Are you Kalista? Regarding the case where you accused Nora of attempted murder, new evidence has been submitted. We need you to come down to the police station to verify the evidence."

Kalista frowned in displeasure. "If there's new evidence, just convict Nora and let her rot in jail. Why drag me into this?"

"I'm still recovering from the injuries she caused me. I can't make it to the station!" she protested.
The officer explained, "I'm afraid convicting Nora might not be possible now, as the new evidence suggests you attempted to murder her."

Kalista's pupils shrank, her face turning ashen.

"How could that be? It was Nora who was out to get me!"

Even though she was panicking on the inside, she managed to maintain a semblance of composure.

"Don't you know how to solve a case? Can't you see fabricated evidence when it's right in front of you?"

Although Kalista wasn't aware of what the new evidence entailed, she was adamant that it was all false.

"The authenticity of the evidence will be analyzed by us," the officer assured. "But for now, we need you to come with us to aid the investigation. We spoke with your primary care doctor when we arrived, and he mentioned your injuries aren't severe and that you're able to move freely now! If you don't cooperate voluntarily, we'll have no choice but to take you in by force."

Fear gripped Kalista as her eyes darted toward Isaac.

"Isaac, Nora must have concocted false evidence to frame me. You have to help me; I'm going to be your wife. I can't be tarnished with a scandal."

Isaac's grandparents already had their reservations about her.

If she were to be saddled with a criminal charge, their opinion would only worsen.

Isaac spoke coldly, "Go with them and see what this evidence is."

Kalista looked at him, her eyes brimming with distress, but Isaac was already stepping away.

Biting her lip with frustration, she resignedly followed.

At the police station.

Nora and Isaac, alongside Kalista and Mortimer, were gathered in the same interrogation room.

Isaac's expression darkened immediately upon seeing Mortimer, a chill emanating from him.

After her capture, Nora had chosen to reach out to Mortimer instead of him.
Did she really trust Mortimer that much?

The police started to play a new piece of evidence.

It was footage from a dashcam.

The camera was positioned across the street from where it all went down.

The car had been waiting to make a U-turn and had captured the scene happening across the way.

The dashcam footage was incredibly detailed and extensive in length.

It showed Nora standing alone on the curb waiting for a ride when Kalista ran up to her, face twisted in anger, yelling at and striking Nora.

Moments later, Kalista glanced at an oncoming vehicle; unaware, Nora had her back to the street and didn't see the car coming.

With a strong shove, Kalista pushed Nora into the street. Instinctively, Nora grabbed Kalista and flung her away.

The approaching car, swerving to avoid someone dashing in front, veered sharply and struck Kalista, who had been thrown into its path.

After the video ended, a hush fell over everyone.

Kalista was ashen, her whole body trembling.

She never imagined that a car's dashcam could capture the entire incident.

"Kalista, is this you in the video?" the officer asked, pointing at the screen.

Defeated, Kalista nodded. "Yes, it's me."

Her face in the video, her gown from that day, an exact match—there was no room for denial.

"Do you admit to what you did in this video?" the officer pressed on.

The color drained from Kalista's face; tears welled up in her eyes. She desperately looked at Isaac for help.

She didn't want to admit it, but the evidence was unmistakable.

Isaac was her only hope now.

But Isaac was looking down, lost in thought, and didn't catch her pleading gaze.

With tears in her eyes, Kalista could only nod in admission. "I admit it."

She knew the police would verify the authenticity of the footage.

Denying it now would only lead to public embarrassment later.

She had no choice but to confess.

"Why did you push Nora? You saw the car coming, and still, you pushed her into the road. That's attempted murder. Do you understand?" The officer's tone was grave.
Tears immediately spilled down Kalista's cheeks as she explained, her voice thick with grievance. "I didn't mean to push her. She said something humiliating about me, and it really got to me. I didn't even realize what I was doing."

Nora spoke up calmly, "If she's admitted to it, I'm no longer under suspicion, right?"

The officer nodded. "That's correct."

"Good. Now it's my turn to file a report. I want to charge Kalista with attempted murder and for framing me," Nora continued.

"We'll take your statement and open a case right away," the officer assured her.

"You can't file a report, Nora!" Kalista shrieked.

Her eyes burning red with fury, she glared at Nora, teeth clenched, "If it wasn't for you setting me up that night, making a fool out of me, how could I have been so impulsive and lost my sanity, doing what I did? Let's both step back here. I'll overlook the defamation you caused, and you drop the charges. What do you say?"

Nora scoffed, "No deal. If you think I've defamed you, sue me. Take legal action. We each report our case, no interference, but I will never forgive you for trying to kill me!"

With that final word, Nora stood up and walked out of the interrogation room.

"Can't you be a little kind, Nora?!" Kalista screamed, enraged.

"Being kind to others at the expense of myself is a cruelty I can do without," Nora retorted sarcastically, then without another pause, she walked out the door.

Mortimer also stood up and followed Nora out of the room.

Isaac's face turned stormy, his hands clenched into fists on his knees.

Was Nora planning to book a room with Mortimer again?

He rose abruptly and strode out the door.

"Isaac, where are you going? Don't you care about me anymore?" Panic gripped Kalista as she stood up, reaching for Isaac's hand.

Isaac was forced to halt.

He turned to Kalista, his tone icy. "Didn't you swear up and down that you were honest with me? That it was all Nora's doing?"

Flushed with shame and tears welling up, Kalista stammered, "I'm sorry, Isaac. I shouldn't have lied to you. I know I was wrong. You have to help me!"
Isaac's demeanor grew frostier. "Do you think your only fault is deceiving me? You saw the car coming, and still, you pushed Nora onto the road. Do you think that's alright?"

Kalista pressed her lips together tightly. Did he really care so much about Nora? So what if Nora died because of her? Nora had betrayed Isaac before. He should feel regret that Nora wasn't hit by the car, not defending her!

Kalista suppressed the bitterness welling up inside her, and with tears streaming down her face, she said, "I'm sorry; I know I was wrong. I shouldn't have pushed her."

"Isaac, please don't leave me alone. Can you take me home with you?" she begged.

"With your skills, you can surely take me with you if you want!"

For Isaac, taking Kalista with him wouldn't be a challenge at all.
