Chapter 216 Suffering the Same Pain as Her

Allen's eyes flickered, a weird look flashing for a sec. But just like that, he was back to normal.

With a grin, Allen said, "I don't know her."

Mortimer squinted, giving Allen the side-eye, "If you don't know her, why'd you say she's got someone in her heart?"

Allen shrugged, "Just a hunch. If she didn't have someone, you wouldn't be trying to hypnotize her into thinking she loves you."

Mortimer's eyes narrowed, looking icy.

That explanation made enough sense.

Mortimer kept staring at Allen for a bit. He still had his doubts but decided to drop it.

"So, when can you hypnotize her?" Mortimer asked.

Allen replied, "Whenever."

Mortimer said, "Then let's do it now."

He was itching to be the one Nora loved the most.

Allen asked, "You sure you want her to forget everything and only remember loving you?"

Mortimer nodded. "Yeah."

Nora's past was packed with memories of Isaac.

If she didn't forget everything and only forgot Isaac, it wouldn't be easy.

Even if Allen could pull that off, it’d be a pain if Nora remembered other people and events and went looking for her old friends.

They knew about her and Isaac.

As long as Nora talked to them, she might figure things out.

So, the safest bet was to make her forget everyone and everything from her past and never go back to Aridonia.

That was the only way to keep the truth buried.

"Alright, I need to give her a shot. Once it kicks in, I'll hypnotize her. It might take a bit," Allen said.

Mortimer asked, "Will the hypnosis hurt her?"

Allen replied, "The hypnosis won't, but the drug will."

Mortimer's eyes darkened, fists clenching as he asked, "What kind of harm?"

Allen laid it out, "It'll mess with her brain. She'll get drowsy. Most people need six to eight hours of sleep, but she'll need more than ten.

"Her memory will get worse, she might move slower, and she could feel dizzy sometimes.

"As she gets older, she's more likely to get Alzheimer's, and it'll hit her sooner than most."

Mortimer's eyes widened, fists clenching tighter, looking torn.

That was a lot of damage!

"Is there any way to lessen the harm?" he asked.

Allen shook his head, "If we just do regular hypnosis, no drug, the harm's less.

"But regular hypnosis isn't stable. She could remember anytime, and the effect could vanish.

"Only by using the drug to mess with her memory can we make sure the hypnosis sticks.

"Everything's got a trade-off. If you want less harm, the hypnosis won't be as strong.

"Think hard about what you want."

Mortimer went quiet.

As a businessman, he knew every choice had its risks. The bigger the reward, the bigger the risk.

"You made up your mind?" Allen asked.

Mortimer frowned hard, eyes full of conflict and hesitation.

He just wanted to be with Nora without hurting her.

He hoped she could be healthy and stay with him. He even dreamed of growing old with her.

"Give me some time to think," Mortimer said, his voice heavy. He couldn't decide right away.

Allen shrugged, "You should be quick. I'm outta Drakonia the day after tomorrow. You need to give me an answer by tomorrow at the latest, or I won't have time for this gig."

With that, Allen left the room.

Mortimer stood by the bed, looking deeply at the unconscious Nora.

"Nora, why's it so hard for me to just be with you?" he whispered.

He sat by the bed, gently stroking her cheek. Now he could finally touch her.

But Mortimer knew this closeness was stolen.

If he didn't hypnotize Nora and mess with her memories, she'd wake up and keep her distance like always.

"Nora, I once thought that with my unwavering affection, I could slowly win you over, make you willingly accept me.

"But after silently watching over you for years and doing all sorts of shady stuff to keep you safe, I've been called all kinds of nasty names. Yet, you still wouldn't give me a chance.

"I don't regret helping and protecting you, but I'm not happy just being your friend."

He had been by Nora's side for so many years, even taking care of her and another man's kid, but he still couldn't win her heart.

Mortimer finally accepted the truth. No matter how hard he tried, no matter how good he was to Nora, she would never love him.

To get Nora, he had to play dirty.

"Nora, Isaac did so many things to hurt you, and you forgave him. Now, even if I hurt you, your kind heart will surely forgive me too, right?"

He kept telling himself that the harm he caused Nora was way less than what Isaac did.

Even if he was wrong, it wasn't as bad as Isaac's. Compared to Isaac, he still came out on top.

If Nora could forgive Isaac, she could surely forgive him too.

"Nora, I'm sorry. I've been selfless for so long. Let me be selfish this time. I swear, I'll treat you well in the future and make up for the harm I've caused you. Nora, I love you so much. Please forgive me," Mortimer said, lowering his head to kiss her forehead.

He stared at Nora for a long time before finally looking away and asking Alaric to bring Allen back.

Allen hadn't gone far, just to the garden to chill.

So, he quickly returned to the room.

"Looks like you've made up your mind?" Allen asked with a smirk.

Mortimer said in a deep voice, "Hypnotize her as I originally asked, but..."

Allen raised an eyebrow, "Got other requests? Just so you know, simple stuff's on the house, but anything more will cost extra."

Mortimer looked down at Nora and slowly said, "Inject me with the same drug. I want to go through the same pain as her."

A look of surprise flashed in Allen's eyes as he stared at Mortimer in shock.

"I thought you just wanted to possess her. Didn't expect you really loved her, wanting to take the same drug," he said, disbelief in his voice.
