Chapter 31 Kalista Can Change Medicine
"It's so hot. I feel so uncomfortable."
Nora clung to the scalding wall, a strange comfort spreading through her skin.
It was soothing.
It seemed to ease her pain.
But it wasn't enough.
She still felt awful.
Stretching out her arms, Nora embraced the wall with all her strength.
It seemed as though the wall itself was tightening around her, enveloping her completely and constricting more and more.
Her breath was squeezed from her lungs as she helplessly sank into this peculiar sensation.
Then, something obstructed her mouth.
A familiar, scorching breath swept over her, moist and engulfing.
It felt comforting.
A soft gasp escaped Nora intuitively.
"Nora, are you sure?"
Through the haze, she thought she heard a familiar voice, strained to the utmost restraint, huskily whispering in her ear.
It was a voice as seductive as a devil's whisper, tempting her into a descent.
Her body shuddered instinctively.
Nora couldn't think.
She only followed her instincts, seeking relief from her pain.
In the living room of the villa.
Edmund sat, sipping tea with poise, casting a casual glance toward the front door; he asked Kieran Gray, "Haven't they brought her yet?"
Kieran answered promptly, "I just called to check; they've already entered the estate with her. It should be just a couple of minutes before she's brought in."
No sooner had Kieran finished speaking than two female bodyguards escorted a young woman into the villa.
This woman was none other than Kalista.
A mix of nervousness and barely concealed excitement and anticipation shone in Kalista's eyes.
Just half an hour earlier, Edmund had unexpectedly sent for her to visit the Porter Family estate.
Kalista inquired about the reason from the two female bodyguards who escorted her, but they disclosed nothing.
Nonetheless, she couldn't help but speculate.
Could it be that Edmund had recognized her worth?
Had he consented to her marriage to Isaac?
Was this a sudden summons to discuss their wedding date?
The more Kalista thought about it, the more her excitement grew, her heart fluttering with joy all the way there.
Kalista approached Edmund with a gentle, appropriate smile on her face and softly inquired, "Grandpa, you seemed in such a rush to have me come. Is there something you wanted to talk to me about? I apologize for not bringing a gift; your call was so sudden that I didn't have time to prepare one," she added.
Edmund's expression was cool. Setting his glass aside, he rose to his feet, leaning on his cane, and made his way upstairs. "Come with me," he commanded.
Hurrying to keep up, Kalista's heart grew more certain that the urgent summons was to discuss her impending marriage to Isaac. Such weighty matters of matrimony weren't to be discussed in the living room, hence the need to retreat to the upstairs study!
A beam of joy spread across Kalista's face. After years of waiting, she was on the cusp of earning Edmund's approval. Once a part of the Porter family, what did it matter if she had previously embarrassed herself at parties or made a spectacle of herself at the mall?
To marry Isaac meant to be the envy of others. Indeed, she'd be the object of envy for every single woman in Aridonia. Those society ladies who had laughed at her would have no choice but to grovel for her favor.
Enthralled by her own fantasies, Kalista even began to ponder how many children she and Isaac would have and what they would name them. She pinched herself discreetly to snap out of her daydreams, fearing she might burst into laughter otherwise.
Soon, she followed Edmund to the third floor. He paused outside a bedroom door, and she promptly stopped as well. It was then that she heard the risqué sounds emanating from the room, causing her cheeks to flush.
It was barely past eight or nine, and there was already such urgent passion inside. But who could be in the room at this hour, with usually only Edmund and Katie living in the old manor?
Edmund stopped at the door, turning to look at Kalista. "Do you hear that?" he asked.
Flustered, Kalista nodded. "Yes, Grandpa, I do."
"And do you know what those sounds signify?" he probed further.
With increased embarrassment, Kalista could hardly meet his gaze.
He couldn't believe they were having this kind of conversation.
"Understood." Kalista awkwardly nodded in response.
"Do you know who's in the room?" asked Edmund.
A sinking feeling began to gnaw at Kalista's heart.
Before she could respond, Edmund continued, "This is Isaac's room. And right now, Isaac and Nora are inside."
Kalista's eyes bulged in disbelief as she stumbled backward.
"What?"
Isaac and Nora are inside?
She trembled with rage, her pallor ashen with dismay.
She rushed to the door, determined to stop them.
Isaac and Nora were divorced; this shouldn't be happening.
Isaac was hers. He was meant to marry her, to be intimate with her alone.
Yet, before Kalista could even reach for the door handle, two female bodyguards flanked and restrained her with practiced ease.
"Let me go!" Kalista struggled fiercely.
But her strength was no match for the skilled guards.
Her desperate writhing was futile.
"Keep an eye on her1. Don't let her cause trouble; don't let her leave. Just let her listen," Edmund ordered coldly, devoid of emotion.
With that, he descended the stairs.
"Let me go!" she continued her enraged struggle.
No matter how hard she tried, the bodyguards' grip was unyielding.
"Isaac!"
When she couldn't break free, she began to shout, hoping Isaac would hear her cries and come out.
But before she could get the words out, the guards clamped their hands over her mouth.
No matter how hard she fought, she couldn't make another sound.
Meanwhile, the wild noises from the room grew louder.
Kalista was on the verge of madness, eyes bloodshot as she glared at the door, her fists clenched so tightly her nails dug into her palms, drawing blood, but she didn't even notice.
How could Nora be with Isaac like that?
She wouldn't let that woman get away with it.
And Edmund — making her listen to Isaac and Nora together — was this his way of taunting her?
He's gone too far! He's gonna pay for this!
The commotion in the room finally quieted down the next morning.
Half an hour later, the door was finally opened from the inside.
Isaac, with his distinguished presence, emerged from the room.
