Chapter 428 Exposing Mortimer

Mortimer lowered his eyes, hiding the deep emotions within, and a cold, somber aura enveloped him.

"Answer me! What did you do to make Magnus, who used to be so devoted to you, who couldn't bear to be apart from you for even a moment, now tremble in fear when he sees you?"

Nora questioned sharply, her voice filled with undeniable anger.

"You're afraid to answer, aren't you? Fine, I'll answer for you!"

"Because you deliberately held Magnus and made him crash into Isaac's feet, causing him serious injury."

"Because you wanted Magnus dead, so he's afraid of you!"

"Because he knows that the person who wanted to harm him wasn't Isaac but you. That's why, even though he was injured by Isaac, he didn't blame Isaac. Instead, he relied on him, demanded his company, but avoided you at all costs!"

Mortimer opened his mouth, his voice dry, "Nora, let me explain, it's not like that."

"I never intended to harm Magnus."

"I just..."

His voice trailed off.

Mortimer didn't know how to explain.

No matter what explanation he gave now, it would seem weak and unconvincing.

If it were just that Magnus was afraid of him, he could still say that Magnus was traumatized and confused, unable to tell friend from foe.

But he had threatened Magnus.

If he hadn't done anything wrong, why would he threaten Magnus?

Even though he didn't reveal any wrongdoing when he threatened Magnus, those simple threats were enough to indicate the problem.

He couldn't clear his name.

No explanation could absolve him.

"Just what? Why don't you continue making things up? You can't even bring yourself to lie anymore, can you?" Nora sneered.

Mortimer closed his eyes and apologized, "I'm sorry, Nora. I lost my mind temporarily when Isaac hit me and did something I deeply regret."

"The moment I saw Magnus unconscious in my arms, I regretted it."

"You have no remorse at all! Until I found out, you had no remorse!" Nora interrupted him angrily.

"If you truly regretted it, you wouldn't have kept blaming Isaac!"

"If you truly regretted it, when you saw Magnus, you should have cared for him, comforted him, and tried to make amends for the harm you caused. Instead, you threatened him and made it worse!"

Mortimer's face turned pale, and he was at a loss for words.

Nora's eyes reddened, and tears fell as she spoke with anger and despair, "Mortimer, how could you do this? To a three-year-old child, how could you? He grew up under your watch!"

Mortimer uttered softly, "I'm sorry, I'll do my best to make up for my mistakes, Nora. Please give me a chance."

Besides apologizing, he didn't know what else to say.

Nora took deep breaths, and after a while, she calmed down a bit.

Nora spoke coldly and firmly, "You know me, my children are my bottom line."

"I won't forgive anyone who harms my children, no matter who they are."

"I won't give you another chance to hurt my children. From now on, you will never get close to my children again!"

Mortimer's face was filled with urgency, "Nora, you can't be so heartless. I watched Magnus and Soren grow up together. They are like my own children. How can you be so cruel and keep us apart?"

Nora replied coldly, "Mortimer, do you have any shame?"

"You seriously hurt Magnus on purpose, almost killed him, and during his recovery, you threatened him. Is that how you treat someone you claim to care about?"

Mortimer's eyes darkened, and he asked bitterly, "Nora, why are you so heartless to me?"

"Isaac has done so many things to hurt you, even driving you to suicide, and you can forgive him. Why are you so strict with me?"

"Am I so insignificant in your heart?"

Nora replied coldly, "Haven't I been lenient enough with you?"

"When I was injured, you fed me drugs and hypnotized me, making me believe you were the one I loved deeply, deceiving me into marrying you."

"That drug causes permanent brain damage, you knew that, right?"

"You must have known. You found the person, you found the drug, how could you not know?"

Mortimer's pupils contracted, and he looked at Nora in shock, his hands trembling slightly.

All along, she had only casually asked him if he knew about her memory loss and confusion, and if it was related to him.

When he denied it, she didn't pursue it further.

She had never mentioned the permanent brain damage caused by the hypnotic drug.

He thought she didn't know, but she knew!

Nora laughed sarcastically, "Surprised that I know?"

"After I regained my memory, I overheard Rhys and Isaac talking about the brain damage caused by the hypnotic drug, and I guessed it was you."

"Who else but you could get such an expensive and rare drug?"

"You thought I was stupid, that I would just buy your excuses and forgive you. I only acted like I didn't know because of our friendship and my gratitude for your kindness. You only hurt me, and I didn't care, so I didn't bring it up."

"In my view, my brain damage was less important than our friendship."

Mortimer's face turned pale, and he clenched his fists, a tight knot forming in his chest that felt like it was suffocating him.

Nora continued, "And about Magnus and Soren being sold to the mountains, did you really think I believed that Alaric, who has always been loyal to you, would sell Magnus and Soren without your orders?"

"Even if that were true."

"Did you never think about Magnus and Soren during all that time? Did you never ask about their situation?"

"If you truly considered them your own children, you would have noticed their trafficking."

"Before I regained my memory, Alaric was still by your side, which means he was just following your orders, not acting on his own. Otherwise, why didn't you punish him?"

Mortimer's lips turned white, and his eyes were dark and unclear.

Nora sneered, "I didn't pursue this matter with you either."

"I had sworn not to let you near my children again, but later Magnus kept asking to see you, so I let you reconnect with them."

"I really am forgetful. Seeing you treat Magnus and Soren so well, I forgot what you had done and how good you are at pretending, giving you another chance to hurt Magnus."

Mortimer said hoarsely, "Nora, I..."

Nora looked him in the eyes, her eyes red, and continued, "Do you think I haven't forgiven you enough?"

"Which of the things you did hurt me less than what Isaac did?"

"Sure, Isaac drove me to suicide, but that was me stabbing myself, me not wanting to live anymore!"

"But you, every time, you personally hurt me."

"Haven't I been lenient enough with you?"

"Mortimer, do you really think that worrying about whether you're tired is what it means to be forgiving, instead of being angry or blaming you for what you did to my son?"
