Chapter 257 Has Nora Completely Lost Hope in Him?

Mortimer gave Alaric a hard kick.

Alaric tumbled a few feet away but quickly got back on his knees. Even though he was hurting, he didn't make a peep.

"I didn't know you're such a saint. Following someone as ruthless as me must've been tough, huh?" Mortimer's face was blank, his voice calm but icy.

Alaric begged on his knees. "No, it's not tough at all! It's an honor to be by your side, and I respect you more than anyone! I messed up with Magnus and Soren. Please, give me a chance to fix it!"

Mortimer asked coldly, "Where'd you send them?"

Alaric replied, "I gave them to someone in a remote mountain village. If you want them dead, I'll find them and do it right away. I won't hesitate this time! Just give me a chance!" He was kicking himself for showing mercy before.

Mortimer said, "First, find them and see if they've contacted anyone. If they have, don't kill them, bring them back. If they haven't, then kill them."

Alaric immediately responded, "Got it!"

"Wait," Mortimer called him back and asked, "When you sent them away, did you tell them it was because I didn't want them?"

Alaric said, "No. When I took them away, they were calling for Nora and you. I told them I was taking them to you, and that's why they followed me quietly. If they can't be killed, I will take full responsibility and won't drag you down!"

Mortimer's tense expression softened a bit. "Alright."

Alaric then limped out of the room.

Within two days, he had found out what happened. He rushed to Mortimer, knelt down, and said, "Mr. Radcliffe, something's wrong. Magnus and Soren have been rescued by the police."

Mortimer's eyes darkened. Suppressing his anger, he asked, "Details!"

Alaric immediately reported everything he had found out, "I contacted the person who took them. She said the police took them away a few days ago. Following the trail, I found out that Isaac was the one who reported it. Now, they have been sent back to Aridonia and are with Ms. Foster." His voice grew quieter as he spoke.

Mortimer lowered his eyes, a storm brewing within them.

He pondered, 'Magnus and Soren have actually returned to Nora's side. So, the recent calls from her were giving me a chance to confess?

Mortimer felt a sharp pain in his heart.

At the same time, an unnamed panic spread within him.

Had Nora completely lost hope in him?

"I'm sorry, it's all my fault for this." Alaric's voice was choked with regret.

Mortimer said nothing, but his gaze was icy.

Alaric, filled with guilt, said, "Mr. Radcliffe, I will go explain everything to Ms. Foster and tell her it was my decision to abandon them, not yours!"

Mortimer coldly replied, "Do you really think she'll believe you?"

Alaric said, "I'll find a way to make her believe!"

Mortimer gave him a long, hard look, guessing what Alaric had in mind. But he didn't try to stop him.

He simply said, "Get out."

Alaric didn't get up right away. He lingered a bit longer. "Thank you for your kindness!"

Mortimer stayed cold and indifferent.

Alaric then left the room.

For the next couple of weeks, Nora didn't go to work and stayed with Magnus and Soren.

At first, the kids had nightmares and cried in their sleep.

But as time went on, the nightmares became less frequent.

Happy memories slowly started to push the painful ones aside.

Seeing the kids getting better, Nora decided to take them to the store so she could work and be with them at the same time.

After all, Sophia was pregnant, and Nora didn't feel right leaving the store entirely to her.

Sophia was surprised to see Nora bring Magnus and Soren to the store.

"Nora, what's the deal with these two kids? Where'd you find them? And why are they wearing masks?"

Nora lowered her eyes to hide her guilt and said calmly, "They're my friend's kids. I'm helping take care of them for a while. Their parents don't want anyone to see their faces, so they wear masks when they go out."

Even though she had a good relationship with Sophia, after what happened with Mortimer, she couldn't fully trust anyone.

"I see. Don't worry, you can leave them here. I'll help you take care of them!" Sophia said with a smile.

Nora felt grateful. "Thank you."

Sophia laughed heartily. "Why are you being so polite with me? We're good friends, your business is my business!"

Nora felt touched but also guilty.

"Ms. Foster." A familiar voice came from the door.

Nora turned to look.

Seeing who it was, her face darkened, and she instinctively shielded Magnus and Soren.

The kids' expressions were complicated when they saw the person.

"Alaric, what are you doing here?" Nora asked coldly.

Alaric said, "I need to talk to you, either alone or with the children."

Nora's voice was icy. "I don't want to hear it. Get out."

Alaric said, "If you don't talk to me, I'll stay at the door."

Nora's face darkened with anger.

If he stayed at the door, it would scare away customers. Even if it didn't, his presence was annoying.

Nora looked away and pushed Magnus and Soren towards Sophia. "Please watch them for me. I'll be back soon."

Sophia nodded. "Alright, I'll take care of them."

Nora patted Magnus and Soren's heads and walked out of the store with a stern face.

Alaric followed her.

When they reached a secluded spot, Nora stopped and turned to Alaric, mocking, "Did Mortimer send you to take the blame?"
