Chapter 247 It Turns Out She Has Been Protecting Him All Along
Isaac's face went pale. He glanced at Nora, clearly freaked out.
Sophia spilling the beans in front of Nora was like ripping open the secret he'd been trying so hard to keep under wraps. Nora already had her doubts about their relationship, and now, thanks to Sophia, she might be even more suspicious.
Plus, he didn't know what they might've talked about in private earlier.
Sophia spoke up again, "Mr. Porter, even if Nora did something to hurt you before, you've already gotten your revenge. Just let her go!"
Isaac snapped, "Shut up! This is none of your business!"
Sophia was so scared by his outburst that her eyes filled with fear.
"Mr. Porter, don't be so harsh to my friend!" Nora said, clearly annoyed.
Isaac felt really frustrated.
Why did Nora, even with her memory gone, still stick up for Sophia but always keep her distance from him?
His face turned red with anger. But in the end, he couldn't bring himself to be mean to Nora. He swallowed his anger and softened his tone. "Alright, whatever you want me to do, I'll do it."
Nora felt a twinge of sarcasm. She didn't want to stay with him, but he wouldn't let her go. Now he was saying all these sweet things. Was he crazy?
Isaac turned to Sophia again. "Show me the store's surveillance footage."
Sophia clenched her fists but eventually led him to the front desk, turned on the computer, and opened the folder with the surveillance footage. "It's all here. You can watch it yourself."
Isaac sat down in front of the computer. He noticed Nora had quietly walked behind him and was staring at the screen. He paused and said, "Don't you want to chat with Sophia a bit longer? I'll just take a look by myself. You don't need to stay with me."
He didn't want Nora to remember the weird people who had come looking for her before. That person was probably Daxton, and him coming to find Nora couldn't be for anything good.
Nora said, "I want to see what I used to be like."
She thought, 'Isaac suddenly wanting to check the store's surveillance is really odd. If he wanted to see my past, there are cameras at the entrance and in the garden of the Porter family mansion. He could easily check his own footage. Maybe he found something strange and came to check the surveillance here?'
Magnus and Soren had shown up in the store before. She was worried Isaac would see their faces when checking the footage. After the suicide incident, she was even more determined not to let Isaac find out about Magnus and Soren. So, she had to stay here. If she found anything unusual, she could stop it in time.
Isaac glanced at Nora and saw her curious expression. In the end, he didn't push her away. He held the mouse and randomly clicked on a surveillance video. It was a normal video with nothing unusual. He didn't even speed it up.
Nora felt Isaac was doing this on purpose. As long as she was here, he wouldn't look for the footage he really wanted to see. After watching for a while, she turned and left.
Then Isaac immediately started looking for the date.
The surveillance footage Wesley had sent him had a timestamp. He just needed to find the footage from that day. Soon, he found it. He didn't bother checking it on the computer but sent it straight to his email, planning to review it later. Just as he hit send, the computer screen went black.
The lights in the store went out too.
"What's going on? Did we lose power?" Sophia asked, heading out to check with the neighboring store. She came back shortly and said, "The store next door still has power. Why did we lose power?"
Nora's eyes flickered. She'd never admit she deliberately cut the power to stop Isaac from checking the surveillance.
Sophia didn't know much about electrical stuff, and Nora worried she'd be suspected.
Sophia said, "I'll call an electrician to take a look."
The electrician arrived quickly.
He flipped a switch and left with a hundred-dollar service fee. It was quite quick.
Sophia was annoyed. "Why didn't I think it was just a tripped breaker? Just a flip of the switch, and it cost a hundred bucks. What a rip-off!"
Nora lowered her head, feeling guilty.
After the power came back on, Isaac wanted to keep checking the other surveillance footage.
Seeing he was still persistent, Nora had no choice but to cut the power again.
This time, Sophia was quicker and checked the breaker herself right away. "Why did the breaker trip again? If it keeps tripping like this, could there be a problem with the wiring? Should we call an electrician to check everything?" she said, worried.
If there was a wiring problem, it could be dangerous. At the least, it could damage electrical appliances. At the worst, it could cause a fire.
Nora pretended to be calm and said, "I don't know what's going on, but it's only tripped twice. No need to call an electrician just yet. Let's wait and see." She then looked at Isaac. "You shouldn't turn on the computer for now. Repeated power outages can damage it."
Isaac had already gotten what he wanted, so he didn't push it. He unplugged the computer and finally stood up.
Nora felt secretly relieved.
Since Nora wanted to stay in the store, Isaac stayed with her. But Nora only chatted with Sophia and ignored him.
Isaac didn't stay idle. He first sent the surveillance footage to Wesley, asking him to review it and edit the useful parts for him. Then he started dealing with emails from the company.
Wesley took more than half an hour to finish editing the video.
Isaac put on his Bluetooth earphones and opened the video.
In the video, a man walked into the store and took off his mask and sunglasses.
The surveillance captured his face clearly. It was indeed Daxton!
Isaac's face turned extremely dark.
Daxton had secretly come to find Nora. What did he want with her?
Isaac watched the video, seething with anger at the sight of the man.
The video continued.
After taking off his mask, Daxton greeted Nora.
When Nora saw Daxton, her face was full of anger, completely unlike how one would react to a stranger. Moreover, Daxton's greeting of 'long time no see' further proved that they had met before and had interactions. Before Nora was with him, Daxton had already left the Porter family. Nora had never met Daxton at the Porter family.
Isaac thought, 'How did they know each other? What exactly happened between them?' He suppressed his anger and kept watching.
Daxton mentioned his engagement ceremony with Kalista and then demanded that Nora stop the engagement. He even threatened Nora, saying she should stop the engagement by any means necessary, even if it meant killing Kalista.
Nora angrily refused.
But Daxton threatened her again, saying if she didn't comply, he would kill Isaac! He also said, "I can't find anyone who cares more about Isaac's life than you." Then he left.
There was another video.
It showed Nora alone in the store, holding a key and getting ready to close up. She sighed helplessly, "Anyway, I don't have much time left. Before I die, I'll protect him one more time!"
Isaac's pupils suddenly contracted when he heard this. What does 'protect him one more time' mean?
On the night of his engagement with Kalista, Nora did go to stop the engagement, and even backstage, she had thoughts of killing Kalista. At that time, she indeed had the mindset of protecting him and preventing Daxton from targeting him.
But what did "one more time" mean? Had she been threatened by Daxton before? Had she done something for him before?
Isaac was incredibly shocked, his mind filled with countless questions.
He thought, 'Nora, that fool, why was she so stupid? Whatever Daxton told her to do, she did. Since when was she so obedient? Why didn't she tell me and instead chose to bear it alone? This surveillance footage was from after our divorce. So, even after the divorce, Nora still loved me...'
Isaac suddenly felt a bit of joy in his heart.
In the evening.
Isaac and Nora left the store together.
Nora didn't want to talk to Isaac, so she pretended to sleep as soon as she got in the car.
The journey was silent.
They quietly returned to Nora's home.
But as soon as they entered the house and the door closed, Isaac suddenly hugged her tightly.
"Mr. Porter, what are you doing? Let go of me!" Nora stiffened and shouted sternly. She tried to push him away but couldn't.
"Let me hold you for a while, okay?" he said hoarsely, his voice choked with emotion, and his body trembling slightly.
Nora froze, her mind going blank. She thought, 'Was he crying? He had been with me in the store all day and hadn't been wronged. Why was he crying as soon as we got home? Was he trying to play the victim in front of me?'
"Why are you crying?" She didn't continue to push him away, but her body remained stiff.
Isaac stubbornly said, "I'm not crying."
Nora didn't believe his denial. But she didn't expose him because she didn't want to comfort him.
Isaac said, "Nora, if anyone ever uses my life to threaten you, don't compromise, don't let them threaten you. Even if they say they'll kill me if you don't listen, don't compromise. I'm not afraid of death. And I'm not worth you compromising yourself."
Nora's eyes widened, and her heart trembled violently. She thought, 'Why is he suddenly saying these things? Did he find out about Daxton threatening me?'
It wasn't surprising that she immediately thought of Daxton because he was the only one who had used Isaac's life to threaten her. Moreover, the words Isaac was saying now were almost identical to what Daxton had said when he threatened her.
Suddenly, Nora remembered Isaac's strange behavior in the store today, wanting to check the surveillance footage. At this moment, she suddenly realized.
He checked the surveillance today not to see her or Magnus and Soren but specifically to find Daxton in the footage!
Nora was deeply shocked. Then she thought, 'How did Isaac know that Daxton had come to the store to find me? How much does he know now? Does he only know about recent events, or does he also know about what happened four years ago? Moreover, if he knows that Daxton had threatened me with his life and that I had compromised, doesn't that also mean he knows I have always loved him?'
She didn't dare to ask. And she couldn't ask. She was still 'amnesiac.'
Nora suppressed her emotions and forced herself to calm down. "I don't know what you're talking about. Why are you saying these things to me? Has anyone ever used your life to threaten me before?"
Isaac's emotions had calmed down significantly. "Since you can't remember, let's not talk about it. We'll discuss it when you regain your memory." After knowing all this, he didn't want Nora to regain her memory even more.
Nora had always loved him, loved him so deeply.
But he had said those things to her.
No wonder she was so desperate, desperate enough to stab herself in the heart!
He was terribly wrong!
But if she loved him, why did she have a child with Mortimer?
A look of pain appeared in Isaac's eyes. He thought, 'Nora, what are you really thinking? How can you love me and have a child with another man at the same time?'
"Can you let go of me now?" Nora said.
Isaac's voice carried a hint of pleading, "Can I hold you a little longer?"
Nora coldly replied, "No."
Isaac said, "Then I won't let go. Anyway, you already hate me so much. Hugging you now won't make it any worse."
Nora remained silent.
Isaac carried her into the living room. He sat on the sofa, adjusted to a comfortable position, and held her like a pillow in his arms.
Nora struggled several times but couldn't break free. Finally, exhausted from struggling, she gave up. Whether it was because she hadn't rested well recently or because his embrace was too warm, she fell asleep in his arms shortly after.
Isaac, afraid of waking her, didn't dare to move and stared obsessively at her sleeping face.
At that moment, her phone vibrated in her pocket.
Isaac quickly silenced it before the ringtone could start. He intended to let the call go to voicemail. But when he saw 'Baby' displayed on the screen, his eyes narrowed slightly.
Who was this "Baby"?
Even during their passionate relationship, she had never called him something so intimate!
Isaac's face darkened as he answered the call and put the phone to his ear.
A sweet voice came through the phone. "Mommy, I miss you so much. I finally got a chance to call you."
