Chapter 186 Nora, Do You Have a Conscience?
Isaac didn't let go of Nora until they reached the hospital entrance. She kept her head down, tears streaming. She could feel Isaac's gaze but didn't dare look up.
Isaac's mom died when he was young, and his dad left. Edmund and Katie raised him, and he cared deeply for them. Now, with Edmund in this state because of her, Isaac must be furious.
"Go back. You're with Mortimer now, so don't come see Grandpa anymore," Isaac said coldly.
Nora clenched her fists, feeling a sharp pain in her heart. She kept her head down, holding back her sobs. "I'm sorry, I didn't know things would turn out this way."
Isaac's eyes darkened with anger as he questioned her, "Did you know Mortimer was plotting against my grandpa? Or were you involved too?"
Nora quickly denied it, "I didn't know. But Mortimer released that video last night because of me."
Mortimer had that video for a while, but if she hadn't been so intent to ruin Isaac and Kalista's engagement, he wouldn't have released it. Ultimately, it was her fault.
"Then why do you say it was because of you?" Isaac asked coldly.
Nora's voice lowered as she spoke "I wanted to stop your engagement with Kalista, but I failed. Mortimer released the video to help me."
Isaac asked harshly, "Why did you want to stop my engagement with Kalista?"
Nora said, "I have a grudge against Kalista and didn't want her to get what she wanted."
She didn't dare tell Isaac the real reason, fearing Daxton would find out and hurt Isaac.
Isaac looked at her suspiciously. Nora took a deep breath and apologized again, "I'm sorry, I didn't know Mortimer would do that. If I had known, I wouldn't have let him."
Isaac said coldly, "What's the use of apologizing now? My grandparents are already sick from anger, and the Porter Family's reputation is damaged. Will your apology fix any of that?"
Nora's tears flowed even more. Big drops fell to the ground, wetting it.
Isaac looked at the tear stains, feeling extremely irritated. He said harshly, "Stop crying, don't play the victim in front of me!"
Nora bit her lip trying to control herself from sobbing as she wiped away her tears, but they kept coming.
Isaac said, "If you want to atone, cut ties with Mortimer, never see him again, treat him as an enemy, and take care of my grandpa until he recovers. Then I'll believe you weren't involved!"
Nora said, "I can take care of Grandpa, but I can't treat Mortimer as an enemy. He's been very good to me. Although he's done bad things, he's never hurt me."
Isaac's face darkened in anger , and he exuded a cold aura. "Hasn't my grandpa been good to you?"
Nora said, "Grandpa has been very good to me, but Mortimer has also helped me a lot. I can't repay kindness with enmity."
Whether it was her own matters or the children's, Mortimer had indeed helped her a lot in the past.
Even though she was furious about what Mortimer did, Nora couldn't bring herself to hate him completely or see him as an enemy.
Isaac said sarcastically, "You're really something. You remember Mortimer's kindness but forget I saved your life."
Nora's heart tightened, and she couldn't look him in the eye.
Isaac's voice turned cold, "Get out of my sight and don't come near my grandpa again. You don't deserve to visit him. Stay with Mortimer and repay him well!"
He turned and walked back into the hospital. Nora watched him go, feeling like her heart was being cut by a knife. But she didn't chase after him or explain.
Shortly after Isaac went inside, a car stopped beside Nora. The back door opened, revealing a man who ordered coldly, "Get in the car."
Nora looked at him, hatred and anger flashing in her eyes, but she suppressed it and got in. The car drove off.
Daxton spoke leisurely, "You did well. You stopped Isaac's engagement and made him resent you. He probably won't be interested in you anymore."
Nora felt a pang in her heart. This was exactly what Daxton wanted. He didn't want her or Kalista to have any emotional ties with Isaac.
She had wanted to explain to Isaac, but when she saw Daxton eavesdropping nearby, she decided against it. Instead, she let Isaac think she was unwilling to cut ties with Mortimer, despite Mortimer’s hurtful actions toward Edmund and the Porter Family. This way, Isaac would be disgusted and angry, and Daxton would be satisfied.
"I've done what you asked. Why are you still looking for me?" Nora asked coldly.
Daxton said, "Kalista is still pregnant. You need to get rid of that child too. I can't let Isaac have any burdens affecting his future."
Nora clenched her fists, panic and fear coursing through her. She should be grateful Isaac proposed to Kalista and not her. Otherwise, she would have told Isaac about Magnus and Soren. If Isaac knew about the kids, he'd bring them to the Porter Family, and Daxton would find out. Daxton would surely see them as a burden and want to get rid of them.
Daxton was ruthless, even to his own son.
Nora took a deep breath, suppressing her panic. "Didn't you see what happened last night? Kalista's affair was exposed, and the child isn't Isaac's. Why get rid of it?"
Daxton asked suspiciously, "Are you sure the child isn't Isaac's? Just because Kalista cheated doesn't mean the child isn't his. Besides, she cheated with my dad, who is almost eighty. Does he still have the ability to get a woman pregnant? So, the child must be Isaac's, and it has to be gotten rid of!"
