Chapter 278 Isaac Is in Trouble
The phone rang for what felt like forever before someone finally picked up.
But it wasn't the voice Nora was expecting. Instead, a frantic and unfamiliar voice came through.
"Hello, who are you to the owner of this phone? The owner was in a car accident and is now in the hospital undergoing emergency treatment. We need a family member to sign the surgery consent form. Can you ask his immediate family to come to the hospital?"
Nora's heart dropped. She asked urgently, "He was in a car accident? Which hospital?"
The person on the other end gave her the hospital address.
Nora immediately flagged down a cab and slipped the driver a generous tip to get her there as fast as possible.
On the way, she called Rhys. "Rhys, did you know Isaac was in a car accident?"
"What? Where is he now? Is it serious?" Rhys asked, sounding alarmed.
"He's in the hospital. I'm on my way there now. You should come too, I trust your medical skills!" Nora replied.
"I'll be there right away!" Rhys said.
Nora hung up, clutching her phone tightly, anxiety gnawing at her.
Soon, she arrived at the hospital and rushed to the entrance of the operating room, where she found the nurse who had answered her call.
The nurse handed her several forms. "This is the surgery consent form. Please sign it first. These are the payment slips. Once you pay, the doctors will proceed with the surgery."
Nora didn't hesitate. She quickly signed the forms while asking, "How is he? Is it serious?"
The nurse replied, "I'm afraid it is. He was covered in blood when he was brought in, and it wasn't immediately after the accident. He was already in shock when he arrived. You need to prepare for the worst."
Nora's hands trembled uncontrollably, and tears welled up in her eyes.
But she didn't have time to break down. She quickly signed her name.
The nurse took the consent form into the operating room, and the light above the door turned on shortly.
Nora numbly went to pay the fees. When she returned to the operating room entrance, she grabbed a nurse and asked for details.
The nurse briefly explained, "A citizen walking their dog at night found a severely damaged vehicle under a bridge and discovered the injured person inside. They called the police, and the police called for an ambulance when they arrived."
"The car must have been hit on the bridge and fell off. When the dog walker found the injured person, it had already been some time since the accident, as there were no other vehicles around."
Nora clenched her fists tightly, her heart aching. She didn't know how severe the accident was.
But if Isaac hadn't been knocked unconscious, he would have called for help himself instead of waiting to be discovered by a passerby.
Isaac, you had to pull through. The Porter group was still waiting for you. Edmund and Katie were waiting for you.
And I was waiting for you too.
"Nora, how's Isaac?!" Rhys's breathless voice came through.
Nora stared at the operating room door, her voice shaky. "He's still in there. I don't know."
Rhys quickly got in touch with the hospital director.
After a brief chat, he changed into sterile clothing and headed into the operating room.
Once again, she was left alone, anxiously waiting outside.
Time dragged on.
She finally understood what it meant for time to crawl. Every second felt like torture.
Daxton had once threatened her with Isaac's life.
She had seen Isaac lying on a hospital bed, barely hanging on.
But back then, she knew that with her words, Daxton would stop hurting Isaac, and Isaac would be out of danger.
Now it was different.
Everything was uncertain. It wasn't something she could fix by sacrificing herself to save Isaac.
The light in the emergency room stayed on all night.
It wasn't until early morning, when the sky began to lighten, that the light finally went out.
But Nora didn't dare to ask.
The surgery had taken so long, it must have been very serious. She didn't know if he had made it.
The operating room door opened.
A group of doctors surrounded Rhys with admiration as they walked out.
Nora stood up, her red and swollen eyes fixed on Rhys, but she couldn't utter a word.
Rhys smiled and said, "Don't worry, we managed to save him. He had thousands of tiny glass shards embedded in his body, which made the cleanup very complicated and time-consuming. We'll send him to the ICU for 24-hour observation.."
The tension in her heart instantly relaxed. Nora swayed and almost fell to the ground. "Thank you," she said hoarsely.
Rhys replied, "That's all right. Given my relationship with Isaac, I would have done everything to save him even if no one had requested."
"After standing all night, my legs are about to give out. I'm going to rest now. Contact me if you need anything."
Nora nodded gently.
Rhys comforted her a bit more before leaving, followed by several doctors asking him medical questions.
Some of the questions were about last night's surgery.
From the few questions she overheard, Nora knew that the surgery had not been as easy as Rhys had made it sound.
One doctor mentioned that not only had Isaac's major arteries been pierced by glass shards, but a larger shard had also lodged in his left chest, dangerously close to his heart, making its removal extremely difficult.
After listening to this, Nora broke out in a cold sweat.
If Rhys hadn't happened to be in the area and taken over the surgery in time, Isaac might not have survived.
The nurse soon wheeled Isaac out.
He was wrapped in bandages from head to toe, even his face.
Nora's eyes stung, and tears welled up again.
She wiped away her tears and followed the nurse, watching as Isaac was taken into the ICU.
She couldn't go in, so she stayed outside, silently praying for him.
