Chapter 385: Truly Heartless
Nora's body shook violently, and a sharp pain pierced her heart.
Paralysis.
Vegetative state.
Not long ago, Magnus was lively, able to talk, laugh, and run. He had even excitedly drawn a picture and showed it to her, eagerly awaiting her praise.
But in such a short time, Magnus's whole world had turned upside down.
At just three years old, he was now faced the possibility of lifelong paralysis or worse—being trapped in a vegetative state.
How could she accept this?
How could Magnus accept this cruel reality?
"Rhys, I'm begging you, you have to cure him. He's only three years old. If he becomes paralyzed, how will he live the next few decades? How can I tell him this cruel truth? How can he accept it?"
Rhys said helplessly, "Nora, please don't do this. I will do my best to help Magnus, but I'm just a doctor with skills, not God. There are limits to what I can do."
He couldn't help but sigh again.
He was no stranger to the cycle of life and death, but he still felt regret.
It was normal for Nora, as Magnus's mother, to be unable to accept it.
"Let my assistant take Magnus to the ICU first. Paralysis and a vegetative state are the better outcomes. Right now, Magnus is still in critical condition."
"If he doesn't make it, he won't even have the chance to be paralyzed or become a vegetable."
Nora's vision went black, and she fainted.
Mortimer quickly caught Nora and held her up.
Isaac walked forward with a stern face.
Mortimer took a step back.
Before Isaac could speak, Mortimer voioced, "I'll take Nora back to rest first. You stay with Magnus. He needs you more than Nora does right now."
Isaac stopped and watched Mortimer carry Nora away without stopping him.
He was responsible for what happened to Magnus, and he had the duty to take care of and accompany Magnus.
Rhys looked at Isaac and asked, "What exactly happened? How did Magnus get so badly injured? Did a hitman break into the estate?"
The people in the estate would never dare to harm Magnus.
The only possibility he could think of was that an assassin had broken into the estate and severely injured Magnus.
Isaac lowered his eyes, hiding the dark light in them, and replied hoarsely, "I did this to him. I accidentally kicked him, and he ended up like this."
"What?" Rhys looked at Isaac in shock and disbelief. "Are you crazy? No matter how angry you are, you can't be so harsh on a child!"
"Even if Magnus is Nora and Mortimer's child, and you don't like him or want to see him, you can't hurt him!"
"He's just a three-year-old who doesn't understand anything. He didn't choose to come into this world. If you have grievances, you should take it out on the adults!"
"You... I don't even know what to deal with you!" Rhys was furious.
Even though Isaac was his friend and had saved his life, he still thought Isaac's actions were despicable.
He was an adult, and he had been so harsh on a child who wasn't even four years old. Was he even human?
He had completely lost his humanity!
Even though he could understand that Isaac didn't like Magnus because of his birth, he couldn't support Isaac hurting a child!
It was terrifying.
He suddenly felt like he didn't know Isaac anymore.
He used to think that Isaac, although he seemed scary, was a principled person.
But now, Isaac's actions made him question whether he had ever truly understood Isaac.
"I didn't mean to kick him. I never intended to hurt him. Even when he pushed my grandfather, causing him to be injured and in a coma, I never thought of using force to get back at him," Isaac explained in a deep voice.
Rhys breathed a sigh of relief, and his anger subsided a bit.
Fortunately, Isaac hadn't lost his humanity.
Rhys asked in confusion, "Then what happened to Magnus? If you didn't mean to kick him, how did he get so badly injured?"
Isaac lowered his gaze, fists clenched tight, and replied hoarsely, "At that time, I intended to kick Mortimer."
"Mortimer was holding Magnus, and when I kicked at him, he suddenly turned around with Magnus in his arms."
"The kick I intended for Mortimer ended up hitting Magnus instead."
Rhys was stunned and didn't know what to say for a moment.
He knew Isaac hated Mortimer.
Every time Isaac attacked Mortimer, he was ruthless. That kick, even if it had landed on Mortimer, would have seriously injured him, let alone a three-year-old child like Magnus.
Rhys spoke, "You were too reckless. Mortimer was holding Magnus, and they were so close. You shouldn't have acted like that."
"Even if Mortimer hadn't turned around with Magnus, if you had kicked Mortimer down, Magnus would have fallen too and been in danger."
Isaac pressed his lips tightly together, his eyes full of regret.
He hadn't thought that far at the time.
Seeing Mortimer holding his son, looking so fatherly, had clouded his judgment.
At that moment, he only wanted to beat Mortimer to death and hadn't considered the consequences.
Looking back now, he realized he was wrong.
Even if Mortimer hadn't turned around with Magnus, he shouldn't have made a move at that moment.
Nora had scolded him at the time, telling him not to make a move in front of Magnus, but he hadn't listened, causing Magnus to be so severely injured.
He was wrong.
Terribly wrong.
Because of his impulsiveness, he had caused Magnus to suffer so much.
If Magnus didn't make it, he didn't know how he would face Nora or explain it to her.
Even if Magnus made it, Rhys had said there was a high probability that Magnus would be paralyzed or end up in a vegetative state.
No matter the outcome, he didn't know how to face Nora or Magnus.
Nora must hate him now.
The more Isaac thought about it, the more he felt distressed, and a gloomy aura enveloped him.
"What's done is done. It's too late to talk about it now. You need to work on your temper and not let something like this happen again," Rhys sighed. "Let's get Magnus to the ICU first. After the three-day critical period, we'll see. I'll use this time to prepare for the next surgery. I hope God blesses me to surpass my technical limits and solve Magnus's physical problems."
Magnus was taken to the intensive care unit.
Isaac silently stood guard at the door, refusing to leave.
He hadn't slept for a day and a night, but he didn't feel sleepy at all.
Until Magnus was out of danger, he couldn't calm down or close his eyes.
Every time he closed his eyes, bad images flashed through his mind.
He didn't dare to sleep.
