Chapter 175 The Truth of That Year
"Long time no see," the man said slowly, his deep voice cold and arrogant.
Nora clenched her fists. She never wanted to see him again.
"Looks like you remember me," he smirked.
Nora took a deep breath, trying to control her fear and anger. "How could I forget you, Uncle Daxton?" she said through gritted teeth.
He was Daxton Porter, Isaac's father.
Four years ago, when she was twenty, just three days before Isaac planned to propose, Daxton gave her two choices: betray Isaac so he'd hate her, or refuse and watch him die.
At first, she didn't believe Daxton would harm his own son. But half an hour after she refused, Isaac was suddenly critically ill, and he was bleeding uncontrollably. Daxton revealed he had poisoned Isaac at birth and could kill him anytime.
Nora had half an hour to decide. She gambled Daxton wouldn't go through with it, but he didn't relent. In the end, she had to compromise.
She sought help from Mortimer. On the day Isaac planned to propose, Isaac caught her and Mortimer in bed. Later, when Daxton found out she was pregnant, he forced her to abort the child. With Mortimer's help, she secretly kept the child and left Aridonia.
For three years after her return, Daxton stayed away. She hoped he was gone for good. But now, he was back.
Nora took a deep breath, trying to stay calm. "I'm not with Isaac anymore. Why are you here?"
"I heard Isaac's getting engaged tonight," Daxton said.
"He's not marrying me. You've got the wrong person," Nora retorted.
"I haven't. I want you to ruin the engagement," Daxton insisted.
Nora clenched her fists. "I can't do that!"
Daxton laughed. "I believe you can. If all else fails, kill her. Just stop the engagement."
Nora's eyes widened. "Kill her? I'd get caught and die too!"
"Then find another way," Daxton said.
"I have no way. If you don't want Isaac to marry, stop the engagement yourself! I'm not your slave," Nora snapped.
Daxton threatened, "If you don't help, Isaac dies."
Nora's face twisted in anger. "Is Isaac really your son?"
Daxton laughed. "Of course. If he wasn't, I wouldn't care so much."
"You call this valuing him?" Nora laughed angrily. Daxton didn't care about Isaac's life at all. Every time he talked about killing Isaac, he said it so casually. This was madness!
Daxton said, "Of course I value him. I've arranged his marriage. He can't marry anyone else. If he doesn't marry the person I chose, he's useless and has no reason to live."
Nora was furious. He didn't care about Isaac; he just wanted to use him for his own benefit! She was also curious about who Daxton wanted Isaac to marry.
"By the way, I heard the woman he's engaged to is pregnant? That child can't stay either. While ruining their wedding, find a way to get rid of that child. Isaac's record must remain clean, with no burdens, or it will affect his value."
A chill ran through Nora's heart. She suddenly felt a bit of fear. Thankfully, she hadn't let her two children reunite with Isaac or revealed their identities. Otherwise, if Daxton knew about the children, he would surely want to kill them too.
Nora said tremblingly, "Sorry, I can't do what you asked. Find someone else."
Daxton looked at Nora and smiled coldly, "Only you can do it. I can't find anyone who cares more about Isaac's life than you." In other words, he could only use Isaac's life to threaten Nora.
Nora's face turned livid. Daxton stood up. "By midnight tonight, if I don't hear that the engagement ceremony is canceled, you'll hear about Isaac's death." He put on his mask and sunglasses and left, giving Nora no chance to refuse.
Nora kicked the sofa in anger, tears of pain welling up.
Evening.
Steve came unusually early, arriving at five o'clock to help Nora with dinner. After finishing cooking, he left before six. Because of Daxton's visit, Nora was restless all day and didn't notice anything unusual about Steve.
Nora kept thinking about what Daxton had said and had no appetite. As time passed, she grew increasingly uneasy. She didn't want to do what Daxton asked, but she feared that if she didn't, Daxton would really kill Isaac. Although Isaac had hurt her, she couldn't bear to see him die.
Nora sighed helplessly. "Since I'm already dying, I'll protect him one last time before I go!" She immediately grabbed her keys to lock the door. Just as she reached the door, she saw Mortimer arriving.
Nora was surprised. "Why are you here so early today?"
Mortimer asked, "Are you planning to close up? You're closing early today. Do you have something to do?"
Nora said honestly, "I'm going to Isaac's engagement party."
Mortimer paused, his eyes darkening. "Did something happen? From what I know of you, if nothing happened, you wouldn't go to such an event and make yourself uncomfortable."
Nora smiled bitterly. "I can't hide anything from you. That person came to see me again. He wants me to ruin Isaac and Kalista's engagement, or he'll kill Isaac."
Mortimer's eyes grew even darker. He instantly knew who "that person" was. He looked at Nora and asked solemnly, "After all the things Isaac has done to hurt you, don't you hate him?"
Nora lowered her eyes and shook her head. "What he did to me was because he thought I betrayed him. I can't blame him."
Mortimer pressed his lips together and asked, "If Isaac dies, what will you do?" As long as he could stop Nora and prevent her from ruining Isaac's engagement, he wouldn't have to do anything himself to eliminate the obstacle between him and Nora.
