Chapter 28 Isaac Risked His Life to Save Nora

"Isaac!" Wesley rushed in from outside, his urgency palpable.

"What's got you hollering?" Isaac snapped with annoyance.

Wesley approached Isaac and handed him his cell phone, saying with utmost urgency, "The car accident between Nora and Kalista has been posted online. Everything from Kalista purposefully pushing Nora onto the street, to her twist of truth using incomplete surveillance footage to accuse Nora of attempted murder, to the full video that was captured—it's all been detailed and uploaded online, including that grainy surveillance segment and a dashcam recording that shows exactly what happened!"

Isaac's face darkened instantly. The police had barely received the videos, yet they were already spreading like wildfire online. He couldn't believe it wasn't intentional. And the likely suspect was easy to guess. It was Mortimer who had procured the video. And he would be the one spreading it!

Wesley, bracing himself, cautiously added, "There's another rumor spreading online that someone from the Porter family is helping Kalista. But don't worry, Isaac. The rumors only mention someone from the Porter family; it doesn't specify who. No one will know it's you."
Wesley's voice grew fainter as he went on.

In the high society circles of Aridonia, the relationship between Isaac and Kalista was an open secret.

Anyone who saw the news could guess that Isaac was pulling strings for Kalista.

Whether those in the know would talk about it was another matter entirely.

"And with this scandal spreading, there's a lot of backlash online against the Porter family. Activists from across the nation are protesting right in front of our properties. Within half an hour, I've already had reports of disturbances at our plazas in five different cities. The whole internet is buzzing about this. If we just whisk Kalista away now, it's only going to fuel public outrage. The narrative will spin out of control, saying the Porters use their wealth and influence to help criminals escape justice," Wesley finished his words in a whisper.

Kalista hadn't expected the fallout to be this bad, her fear growing stronger by the minute.

"Isaac, it has to be Nora and Mortimer behind this. They're not just trying to take me down; they want you to. You can't leave me to deal with this alone, nor can you let them off the hook!"

Kalista wept bitterly, her act pitiful but her eyes brimming with hatred and ferocity.

"Enough!" Isaac barked sharply.

His warning gaze fixed on Kalista. "So what if they did bring this to light? They just exposed the truth. You're the one at fault here! Even now, you're pointing fingers everywhere but at yourself. Don't you see any wrongdoing on your part?"

Kalista's heart tightened, and she scrambled to explain, "No, that's not..."

But Isaac was done listening to her excuses.

This foolish woman, daring to speak so freely in front of the cops—did she really think the Porters were above the law?

Isaac stormed out with a grim expression.

"Isaac, how can you just abandon me? I'm your fiancée; how can you turn your back on me?"

Kalista was desperate to follow him.

But as she reached the doorway, the police stopped her and cuffed her wrists.

Isaac moved swiftly.

In less than a minute, he was already at the entrance of the police station.
Mortimer had just pulled his car to the curb.

Nora reached to open the passenger door, about to get in.

Isaac approached with a stern face, grabbed her hand firmly, and pulled her toward him.

Nora's body quickly fell backward into Isaac's embrace.

Turning around to see it was Isaac, she was taken aback.

"Isaac, let go of me!" Nora demanded, trying to pull her hand away.

But Isaac's grip was too strong for her to break free.

"Where are you off to with him? Another rendezvous at a hotel?" Isaac interrogated coldly.

Nora immediately recalled the prior evening's events, shaking with fury. "Isaac, we're divorced. My life is my own business, and none of it concerns you anymore. You have no right or claim to dictate what I do!"

"I've made myself clear; as long as I draw breath, you'll stay away from him. Divorced or not, I'll have my say!" Isaac declared with an authoritative tone.

Mortimer took a step forward, reaching out to pull Nora back.

Before his hand could make contact, Isaac snapped, "If you touch her, and whatever part of her you touch, I'll skin it off, and then I'll chop off your hands!"

Mortimer's hand froze mid-air, eventually retreating in resignation.

"Isaac, calm down. Nora's still hurt; don't make it worse," Mortimer urged.

"Shut up! Mind your own business!" Isaac hissed, visibly annoyed.

Mortimer pressed his lips together, momentarily lost for words.

Wesley, having previously fetched Isaac's car, had now driven it up to them.

He leaped out of the vehicle, swiftly opening the backseat door.

Without another word, Isaac dragged Nora into the car.

Mortimer moved to intervene.

But, fearing Isaac might lash out at Mortimer again, Nora shook her head hopelessly, signaling him not to bother.

With a loud slam, Isaac forcefully closed the car door.

Wesley rushed back to the driver's seat and, with a quick press of the gas pedal, sped off.
In the car, Isaac made sure Nora couldn't escape by pulling her tight into his embrace as soon as they were seated.

After regaining her composure, Nora realized she was sitting on his lap, her body pressed against his chest, feeling the warmth from him through the thin fabric.

Her cheeks turned crimson, and her heartbeat raced erratically.

Suddenly, Isaac's deep voice pierced through the air. "Tomorrow, you go to the police station, drop the charges against Kalista, and clear up the online mess. Say that you had an argument with Kalista, you said some harsh words to her, and she lost her temper and pushed you. You've already settled things privately."

Nora's heart stopped its wild beating, replaced by a dull ache spreading through her chest.

She had nearly been killed by Kalista, who had also slandered her. And now he wanted her to withdraw the case and help restore Kalista's reputation?

What did he think she was?

"Do you really think so little of my life?" Nora asked through the pain in her heart.

"You saw it; Kalista saw the car coming; she wanted to push me under it; she wanted me dead! I was lucky; I didn't get hit by the car, and then she falsely accused me, trying to send me to jail. If it weren't for Mortimer finding evidence to clear my name, I would be the one behind bars right now, not her. She's tried to harm me time and again, and you expect me to let her go and even restore her reputation? Can't you be fair to me for once, Isaac?!"
