Chapter 244 Why Is She So Emotional?
Isaac's face was clouded with a dark mood, but his eyes kept dodging.
Nora had hit the nail on the head.
But he wasn't about to admit it.
"I'll take you back," he said, dodging her question and changing the subject.
"When exactly are you planning to take me back?" Nora pressed.
Isaac replied, "I'll take you to see Grandpa first, then I'll take you back. I was supposed to bring you to him before you got hurt, but your injury delayed everything. Grandpa's been really worried about you. Seeing you will ease his mind."
Nora nodded, her expression icy. "Fine."
Isaac quickly had someone prepare the car and then took Nora to the old house.
To avoid any mishaps like last time, he brought a bunch of bodyguards this time.
Luckily, the trip was smooth. No assassins, no traffic jams.
The car pulled up at the entrance of Porter Manor.
Isaac got out and went to open the door for Nora.
But she didn't take his hand.
She looked at him coldly. "Mr. Porter, I've told you more than once, to me, you're just a stranger. Strangers getting too close to me makes me uncomfortable and, frankly, disgusted."
Isaac stiffened at the the mention of disgusted.
"Mr. Porter, please step aside. I can get out of the car myself. I don't need your help," Nora said calmly.
Isaac took a deep breath, swallowed the bitterness, and stepped aside.
Nora got out of the car on her own. "Lead the way."
Isaac asked, "Can you at least pretend to be close to me?"
Nora's eyes narrowed suspiciously.
Isaac explained, "Grandpa's always hoped we could reconcile. His health isn't great, and I don't want him worrying about us. So, can you just act like we're getting along for his sake?"
Seeing Nora still hesitant, he quickly added, "Don't worry, I won't take advantage of you. I know you don't remember anything and feel uncomfortable. But Grandpa was always good to you. Please, for his sake, don't let him worry."
Nora didn't mind playing along for Edmund's sake. She was faking amnesia and didn't want to show she cared, so she acted impatient.
After Isaac's explanation, she reluctantly agreed, "Alright, for his health, I'll play along."
Isaac looked relieved and grateful. "Thank you."
Nora asked, "Did you tell your grandpa that I lost my memory?"
Isaac nodded. "Yeah, you were so close to Grandpa before. He'd notice something was off right away. But I told him our relationship is good, so he wasn't too worried."
Nora nodded. "Got it, lead the way."
Isaac took her hand.
Nora instinctively wanted to pull away.
Isaac tightened his grip, so she failed.
Before she could get mad, Isaac whispered, "If you don't let me hold your hand, how's Grandpa gonna believe we're on good terms?"
Nora stopped resisting and walked into the villa hand in hand with Isaac.
As soon as they stepped into the hallway, they heard a weak cough from the living room.
Nora's heart clenched. She recognized Edmund's cough!
But it sounded so much weaker than before, frail and powerless. How did Edmund's health get so bad?
Nora's eyes welled up with tears.
Luckily, Isaac was also focused on Edmund's cough and didn't notice her reaction. He quickened his pace, still holding her hand, and they soon entered the living room.
"Grandpa, what's going on with your health? Didn't you say it got better? Why are you coughing again?" Isaac let go of Nora's hand, rushed to Edmund's side, and patted his back, worry etched on his face.
Edmund coughed for a bit before catching his breath, weakly waving his hand. "I'm fine. Don't worry. Where's Nora? Didn't you say you brought her to see me? Where is she?"
Nora stood to the side, unnoticed by Edmund.
Seeing Edmund's condition, Nora was shocked and heartbroken.
She thought, 'How did Edmund age so much in such a short time? His hair's all white, his face full of wrinkles, and his complexion looks like lifeless tree bark. He's lost so much weight, like he's been hollowed out...'
Nora clenched her fists, her nails digging into her palms, trying to stay calm.
Isaac said, "Nora's here, she's right there. Grandpa, see, I didn't lie to you. Nora's still alive, she's back with me now, and we're getting along great. You don't have to worry about us anymore."
Edmund followed Isaac's gaze. When he saw Nora, his body trembled, his cloudy eyes filled with tears, and then his eyes became moist.
"Nora, it's really Nora. Come over here and let me have a good look at you!" He reached out towards Nora, staring at her without blinking, as if afraid she'd disappear if he blinked.
Nora walked over and sat next to Edmund, gently saying, "I'm back."
Edmund raised his trembling hand to touch Nora's cheek. "Really, it's really Nora, not a dream. Nora's really back." He reached out and hugged Nora, choking up. "It's good that you're back. Seeing you safe and sound, I can be at ease."
Nora's nose tingled, and she couldn't hold back her tears. She also reached out and hugged Edmund, choking up. "Grandpa, you have to take care of your health."
Isaac looked at Nora suspiciously. Didn't she forget Edmund? Why was she so emotional?
