Chapter 46 Isaac Agreed to Her Request
Even though Nora had confessed.
Looking at her helpless, weary expression, Isaac figured she was just tired of Kalista's noise and wanted to get rid of her by saying what Kalista wanted to hear.
The disappointment in Isaac's eyes deepened.
He approached Kalista with a stern face, grabbed her off the ground, and dragged her outside.
Kalista was overjoyed.
Did Isaac finally believe she was innocent?
Was he taking her back, leaving Nora behind?
The more Kalista thought about it, the more excited she became, and she even threw a defiant glance back at Nora.
Isaac walked briskly, and Kalista, in her high heels, struggled to keep up. She needed to jog to follow him.
She nearly fell several times.
Though she managed not to fall, she twisted her ankle, shaking with pain.
"Isaac, slow down; my foot hurts so much," she said plaintively, hoping to gain his sympathy.
But Isaac didn't slow down or even glance back at her, a heavy atmosphere enveloping him and sending chills down her spine.
Soon, Isaac pulled her to the hospital entrance.
He took out his phone and called Wesley.
"Come to the hospital immediately."
After about ten minutes, Wesley arrived, hurrying in.
When Wesley spotted Kalista, he immediately addressed Issac with an air of apology, "Sorry, Mr. Porter. I had her all set to take her back to her place to keep her from wandering off. But she bolted when I was getting her into the car."
Handing Kalista off, Isaac said coolly, "Take her back. Without my orders, she's not to leave her mansion. If she escapes again, you might as well hand in your resignation."
Wesley's heart tightened, his forehead breaking out in a cold sweat, "Yes, sir. It won't happen again."
Isaac turned and walked toward the hospital.
"Isaac, Nora admitted she stabbed herself. Why are you still punishing me?" Kalista pleaded in desperation.
"It was a setup, and Nora confessed. Why won't you believe me?"
Frantic, she tried to chase after Isaac, but Wesley was quick, grabbing her and handing her over to two bodyguards.
"Keep a close eye on her when we get back, and don't let her get away again, or we're all out of a job!"
...
Back in the hospital room, Isaac found Nora clutching her knees on the bed, her vulnerability tugging at his heartstrings.
As he approached, he asked, "Why aren't you resting?"
Nora looked up at him without uttering a word.
"What are you staring at?"
She continued her gaze.
After a long pause, she asked softly, "What are you going to do about Kalista?"
Isaac's eyes betrayed a hint of difficulty.
He had scolded Kalista without a shred of sympathy.
But he hadn't really thought about actual punishment.
After all, Kalista had once saved his life.
She stood by him during his toughest times.
Even if she was at fault, he could reprimand her, but he couldn't impose severe punishment.
Nora retracted her gaze and offered a faint smile. "I understand. No need to explain. The fact that you scolded her at all is surprising enough for me."
Isaac's lips were pressed tight, his expression dark.
Would all of this have been avoided if it hadn't been for that incident with Nora years ago?
Taking a deep breath to settle his unrest, he said firmly, "I'll make it up to you on her behalf. If there's anything you want, just ask."
Nora looked up with a forced smile, "What if I ask you to personally take care of me until my wounds heal?"
"Agreed." Isaac didn't hesitate.
A shadow of disappointment crossed Nora's eyes.
Kalista meant that much to him, to the point where Isaac, a man of prestige, was willing to stoop down to take care of her, despite considering her an annoyance.
Nora fought back the sting in her heart and said, "I was just kidding. Just pay me a million to cover my medical and nutrition expenses."
"I'll cover the medical expenses, and I'll take care of you too—just to make sure you don't come back with more troubles once your wounds start acting up again," Isaac replied.
Nora furrowed her brows.
Did she come off as such a despicable and shameless person? In his eyes, she was far from being a good person, and she felt choked up with frustration.
Gritting her teeth, she made another demand, "Fine, you can take care of me, but only if you follow my orders completely during that time. Can you do that? If you can't, then don't bother."
She set this excessive condition, hoping he would back out.
"Okay." Isaac glanced at her and agreed readily, which only made her frown more deeply.
She regretted making such a demand now, especially since he had accepted it so easily.
"You need ample sleep for your injuries to heal quickly. It's getting late; better go to sleep now, and we can talk more tomorrow."
Isaac gently pressed her back onto the bed and pulled the covers up over her.
Nora's eyes stayed open; she had no intention of sleeping.
"Don't be afraid; I'm here with you. No one's going to hurt you again," he said, softly patting her head.
Nora's body tensed instantly.
Was this his way of showing concern?
Raising her eyes to meet his profound gaze was a mistake; just one second of eye contact sent her heart into disarray. She quickly averted her gaze and closed her eyes, not daring to keep looking.
She feared that another glance would plunge her back into the depths of his tenderness.
Nora thought she wouldn't be able to fall asleep.
But inhaling Isaac's pleasant scent, she drifted into a peaceful slumber.
That night, she slept soundly.
The next morning, she was awakened by warmth.
Opening her eyes, the sky outside was dim and hadn't fully brightened yet.
Her body was wrapped tightly in a pair of strong arms encased in a warm and fervent embrace.
Nora's entire body stiffened, her heart filled with shock.
When had Isaac climbed into bed with her? And he was holding her while they slept?
During their three years of marriage, he had never spent a single night holding her like this.
Was he bewitched last night?
While Nora was taken aback, an undercurrent of sadness also surged within her.
Frozen in place, scarcely daring to exhale, she maintained an unbroken stare, her eyes widened in anticipation. Enveloped by the soft glow, she hungrily drank in the sight of his flawlessly exquisite features.
This could very well be the last time in her life that she could admire his face from this close, this intently.
It had been an eternity since she had the chance to look at him so closely.
She was determined to etch every part of him firmly into her heart.
Nora gazed at him for an eternity, then gently leaned in and pressed a kiss to his lips.
"Isaac, I'll remember your face in case there's a next life."
