Chapter 481: This is His Retribution
"Rhys, come on, tell me, how is Magnus?" Nora couldn't help but urge.
Rhys's silence only heightened their anxiety and fear.
Rhys pressed his lips together and finally spoke, "Magnus has a hematopoietic disorder."
"What?" Nora felt a blankness in her mind, her body swaying uncontrollably.
Isaac quickly supported her, his eyes cold and dark as he looked at Rhys, "Is it treatable?"
Rhys shook his head.
Nora felt dizzy, leaning weakly against Isaac, her eyes filling with tears.
Magnus had just recovered not long ago, how could there be another problem?
Life really seemed to have it out for him.
"I find his illness a bit odd," Rhys said, frowning.
"He was hurt before, and I checked him from head to toe, even ran blood tests. Back then, everything came back normal."
"With how serious his condition is now, there's no way there weren't any signs beforehand. Even if there were no visible symptoms, a thorough exam should have picked up on something."
But before this, there was nothing unusual.
This is very strange.
Nora's face turned pale, and she asked tremblingly, "What do you mean? Are you suggesting that Magnus's illness wasn't natural, but someone poisoned him?"
Rhys was silent for a moment, then shook his head, "It doesn't seem like it. I've done various tests and couldn't find any evidence of toxin ingestion."
"If it were poisoning, others might not detect it, but I wouldn't let it slip by me."
Nora anxiously asked, "Then what is going on?"
Rhys replied, "It might be an unknown cause. The same illness can stem from countless factors and pathological reactions."
"When doctors and professors first encounter new symptoms, they're often taken aback. But after seeing it more frequently, it starts to feel routine."
Nora bit her lip hard, her body trembling uncontrollably.
An unknown cause or pathological reaction, did this mean that Magnus's situation was harder to deal with than usual?
Isaac said in a deep voice, "I don't want to hear all that. I don't understand it. I just want to know, can it be treated?"
Rhys opened his mouth, seeing Magnus looking at him with a pale and tense face.
He paused for a few seconds, then smiled lightly, "Of course, it can be treated. I'm just curious because it's rare, that's all."
"You should go home first. Don't let Magnus go to school for now. If he suddenly faints and no one notices, it could be dangerous."
"I'll draft a treatment plan and contact you once it's ready."
Isaac gave Rhys a deep look.
He could tell that Rhys wasn't being entirely truthful. He just didn't want to say too much in front of Magnut.
When his grandparents were sick, Rhys would always say nice things in front of Edmund and Katie, then privately tell him the real situation.
According to Rhys, a patient's emotions greatly affected their condition, almost as much as medication.
It was like when someone wasn't feeling well, hopped online, and found out they had a terminal illness. They immediately felt worse, even unable to walk.
But then they went to the hospital, and it turned out it was just constipation. Just like that, they felt a million times better.
Isaac took a deep breath, suppressing the emotions swirling inside him.
He went to pick up Magnus.
Holding Magnus with one hand and Nora with the other, he walked out of the office.
At the hospital entrance, Isaac handed Magnus to Nora and went to get the car.
They drove home in silence, and Nora finally put Magnus down.
Magnus still looked guilty, carefully holding onto Nora's clothes, and asked softly, "Mommy, I'm sorry, I made you and Daddy unhappy."
Nora rubbed his head, using a bit of force, "Magnus, didn't Daddy and I tell you? We don't blame you, and you didn't make us unhappy."
Magnus replied sadly, "But you both stopped smiling."
Nora forced a smile, "Even if nothing happened to you, we wouldn't be smiling all the time. Not smiling doesn't mean we're unhappy. Most of the time, people are expressionless. Don't overthink it."
Magnus shook his head, his expression serious, "No, even when you and Daddy aren't smiling, your eyes are bright. But now, I can't see the light in your eyes."
"It's all because of me."
Though young, he could tell if his parents were genuinely happy or just pretending.
He felt even more guilty.
Nora's lips trembled, her smile stiff.
Magnus was too sensitive, noticing even the smallest details.
Maybe she and Isaac were just bad at pretending.
Isaac sighed helplessly, "Magnus, we're family. You don't have to be so cautious around us. Even if you did make us unhappy, it's okay."
Magnus didn't respond, lowering his head and staying silent.
Isaac felt both heartache and sorrow seeing Magnus like this.
What was going on in Magnus's little head?
Why was Magnus living so cautiously?
He even wished Magnus would go back to being his lively, mischievous self, at least not always blaming himself and risking psychological issues.
Isaac looked at Nora and said softly, "Stay home with Magnus. I'll go buy groceries and pick up Soren later."
Nora nodded.
Isaac kissed Nora on the cheek, "Don't worry too much. With Rhys, everything will be fine."
Nora smiled, "Okay."
Isaac crouched down and kissed Magnus on the cheek, "I'm going out. Stay home with Mommy and don't overthink. You're still a child, and you're our precious one. It's okay to make mistakes."
Magnus looked up at Isaac, his big eyes filled with worry.
He couldn't shake off the chains he had placed on himself, his inner torment unabated. The better his parents treated him, the deeper his guilt and torment.
His happiness was stolen, and he had caused the real Magnus's death, becoming a despicable thief, making his parents sad. He hadn't protected Magnus's parents.
He remembered seeing on TV that bad deeds would be punished.
Maybe this was his punishment.
He had done something bad, caused the real Magnus's death, stolen Magnus's life, and now God was punishing him.
A tear fell from his eye.
He turned silently and walked back to his room.
Isaac frowned, then stood up helplessly and said to Nora, "After his illness is treated, let's get him a psychologist."
