Chapter 405: Live for Her
Rylan frowned.
Sophia had no will to live?
Was it because she'd been stabbed in the abdomen and thought she'd lost the baby, leading her to give up?
It was said that pregnant women have a strong maternal instinct and would sacrifice themselves for their child.
That was probably the case.
Rylan spoke, "Bring the baby to me."
The doctor was stunned, not expecting him to change the subject so quickly.
After a moment, the doctor came to his senses and replied, "The baby is fine, but a bit weak and has been sent to the incubator."
Rylan asked, "When can the baby be brought out?"
The doctor answered, "In about three days."
Rylan thought for a moment but ultimately decided not to have the baby brought out.
His goal had always been to have a child.
He couldn't let the baby take any risks.
Sophia was sent to the ICU.
The doctor explained Sophia needed to be observed in the ICU for seventy-two hours. If she made it through the seventy-two hours without any danger, she would be out of the critical period.
However, just an hour after being sent to the ICU, the alarm on the machine started blaring.
Sophia was in critical condition!
The doctors tried to resuscitate Sophia, but her condition did not get any better.
Rylan immediately ordered, "Bring the baby out of the incubator!"
The baby was quickly brought out.
Rylan saw the baby for the first time.
A tiny bundle, like a little kitten.
Rylan clumsily picked up the baby and walked into the ward.
He placed the baby next to Sophia and comforted in a deep voice, "Sophia, the baby is still alive. It's a boy. Wake up and see him."
As soon as Rylan finished speaking, the alarm on the machine went off again.
The doctor shouted urgently, "The patient's emotions are unstable, and her vital signs are dropping fast. Please do not continue to stimulate the patient!"
"The patient needs immediate resuscitation. Family members, please leave the operating room!"
Rylan was stunned.
How was this different from what he had expected?
Others would miraculously wake up and get better when they sensed their child's presence.
But with Sophia, why was her condition worsening?
Rylan's face was dark and uncertain, but he didn't dare delay the doctors' resuscitation efforts and could only carry the baby out of the operating room.
The doctors kept working to resuscitate Sophia in the operating room, but bad news just kept piling up. When the third critical condition notice was issued, the doctors said they had done everything they could.
In other words, Sophia was beyond saving.
Rylan pressed his lips tightly together, his face cold as he looked at the operating room door.
He only wanted Sophia to give him a child. Now that the child was born, whether Sophia lived or died should have nothing to do with him.
But why did he feel inexplicably panicked and irritated?
At this moment, a nurse came out and said to Rylan, "The doctor wants you to know that continuing resuscitation is meaningless. It's just causing her more pain. The doctor suggests giving up resuscitation. What do you think?"
Rylan clenched his fists tightly, his face dark.
Give up resuscitation.
The words echoed in his mind, making him feel suffocated.
Rylan recalled the past seven years, the way she would lie there so trustingly and tenderly every month, and more recently, the stubborn, distant attitude she had shown him. Frustration bubbled up inside him.
"Don't give up! You must save her!"
The nurse sighed.
She wanted to say that it was already impossible to save her.
Sophia was only alive because of the heart pacemaker maintaining her vital signs.
Once the machine was turned off, she would undoubtedly die.
With her will to live fading, her bodily functions were rapidly declining, and her heart no longer had the ability to beat on its own.
Even if they dragged it out, it wouldn't be for long.
But since the family refused to give up, they could only continue resuscitation until the patient was brain dead.
Meanwhile, Nora had returned to the city and visited all the places she and Sophia had been to, trying to find any trace of Sophia.
But unfortunately, she couldn't find Sophia anywhere she could think of.
There was no news from the police.
Mortimer also had no news.
Isaac had people searching all night but still couldn't find Sophia.
Nora felt both desperate and powerless.
"Sophia, where the hell have you been? Why aren't you answering your phone?"
Just then, her phone suddenly rang.
Nora thought it was Sophia calling and quickly took out her phone.
But the caller ID showed it was Isaac.
Her eyes filled with disappointment.
But she still answered the call.
Isaac's deep voice came through the phone, "Wesley just sent word that he found some information about Sophia. She was taken to a hospital around 1 AM last night. She's in the hospital now, but the situation is still unclear. We're still investigating."
Nora's eyes lit up, and she asked urgently, "Which hospital? Send me the address. I'll go there right now!"
Isaac said, "Okay, I'll send you the address after we hang up. I'll meet you there, too."
Nora immediately hung up the phone.
Soon, Isaac sent a location address.
Nora opened the navigation and drove straight to the hospital.
On the way, Isaac called again, "I had Wesley go directly to the hospital director to get the details. Sophia is currently in critical condition and undergoing resuscitation. The lead doctor suggests giving up resuscitation, saying it's hopeless. Be ready for anything."
Nora's heart sank, and she gripped the steering wheel tightly.
Isaac added, "I've asked the director to have the doctors continue resuscitation. I'm bringing Rhys over now to see if there's any hope."
Nora replied hoarsely, "Okay, thank you."
Isaac asked worriedly, "Are you okay? If you're emotionally unstable, pull over and calm down. Driving in your state is dangerous for you and others."
Nora's hands and feet were trembling, and she was indeed not in a good state to drive.
But she wanted to get to the hospital as soon as possible to see Sophia.
Sophia was already in critical condition. She feared that any delay might mean missing the chance to see her one last time.
"I'm not—"
"Don't be stubborn. You still have Magnus and Soren. You can't risk any accidents. Have you thought about them?" Isaac interrupted her sternly.
Nora's heart tightened.
Yes, she still had Magnus and Soren.
She couldn't afford to have an accident.
Nora had no choice but to pull over, tears silently falling.
"I'm so useless. I couldn't find Sophia in time. Now that she's in critical condition, I can't even drive properly to see her."
Nora sobbed quietly, filled with self-reproach.
Isaac reassured her, "Don't blame yourself. You care too much about her, which is why you're so emotional."
"Where are you? I'll come to you and take you to the hospital."
Nora didn't want to see Isaac, but she had no other choice. She told him her location.
Isaac spoke, "Okay, I'm coming right away. Wait for me."
After hanging up the phone, Nora leaned on the steering wheel, silently crying.
"Sophia, you have to get better."
She waited for half an hour before Isaac arrived.
Nora got out of her car and into Isaac's.
Seeing that Isaac was alone in the car, she asked, "Where's Rhys? Didn't you say you were bringing him to the hospital too?"
Isaac replied, "I was worried about wasting time coming to get you, so I had him go ahead on his own."
Nora pressed her lips together and fastened her seatbelt.
Isaac didn't say anything more and stepped on the gas, heading towards the hospital.
It was rush hour, and they got stuck in traffic for a while.
By the time they reached the hospital, another half hour had passed.
Isaac had already had someone find out which emergency room Sophia was in, and they headed straight for the operating room.
As soon as they reached the operating room door, Nora saw a group of people standing there.
Most of them were Isaac's people, whom she recognized.
There was also a handsome man with an unusual demeanor. He looked familiar, but she couldn't remember where she had seen him before.
Nora didn't have the energy to think about it and quickly looked away.
At that moment, the operating room door opened.
Rhys came out.
Everyone's eyes turned to Rhys.
Nora asked urgently, "Rhys, how is Sophia?"
Rhys sighed and shook his head, "She has no will to live. There's no point in resuscitating her."
"I've told you before, emotions have a huge impact on a person's health. If she's given up, no amount of resuscitation is going to change that."
"To maintain her vital signs, several of her ribs have been broken. Continuing resuscitation will only further damage her body. I've decided to stop resuscitation and let her go with some dignity."
Nora's face turned pale, and she asked in a trembling voice, "Why does she have no will to live? What happened?"
Rhys shook his head. Although he knew Sophia, he wasn't close to her and didn't know what had happened to make her want to die.
Nora, with red-rimmed eyes, asked, "Can I go in and see her?"
Rhys agreed, "Yes, you can go in. Hearing is the last sense to fade after death. If you talk to her now, she might still hear you."
Nora walked weakly into the emergency room.
The doctors and nurses all stepped out.
Nora walked to the bedside and looked at Sophia, who was lying quietly. Tears uncontrollably streamed down her face.
"Sophia, why did you become like this? What happened to you? Why do you have no will to live? Why don't you want to live? What happened?"
Nora knelt by the bed and held Sophia's hand.
Sophia's hand was so thin it was just skin and bones.
Nora's nose tingled, and her tears flowed even more.
Sophia had been pregnant for over nine months, yet her body was so thin and unhealthy.
But she hadn't noticed anything wrong with Sophia.
"I'm sorry, Sophia. It's my fault. I didn't notice anything wrong with you."
"I'm so useless. We're best friends, and I didn't even notice how you were feeling. I don't deserve to be your friend."
Nora cried uncontrollably.
She lay on Sophia, sobbing, "Sophia, I can't stand the thought of losing you. I don't want to lose you. If you go, I won't have any friends left. Please wake up."
"You once said we would grow old together and be happy old ladies. Have you forgotten?"
"You're a liar. Please come back. II'm begging you, don't die. If you die, I won't be your friend anymore. I don't keep liars as friends."
Nora cried in agony, her heart aching as if it were being cut by a knife.
At that moment, Nora faintly heard a weak voice, "I'm not lying, Nora. Don't cry."
Nora's body shook, and she quickly looked up, incredulously staring at Sophia's pale face.
Sophia's eyes were still closed, but her eyeballs were moving under her eyelids, as if she wanted to open her eyes but couldn't.
Nora's heart pounded, and she shouted towards the operating room door, "Rhys, hurry! Come in! Sophia isn't dead. She's come back to life. Come see!"
After shouting, she lowered her head and excitedly said to Sophia, "Sophia, hold on. You have to hold on. I'll stay with you. We still have so many things to do and so many places to visit. Remember our plan to travel the world together? Don't forget!?"
As she spoke, tears fell onto Sophia's face, and Sophia's eyeballs moved even more.
Rhys and several doctors rushed in.
Rhys quickly checked Sophia's condition, a look of surprise flashing in his eyes.
"A medical miracle. Her heart had stopped when we removed the oxygen tube, but now it's beating again, and quite strongly. She has the will to live!"
"Nora, step out for a moment. We need to continue the surgery!"
Nora nodded, "Okay, you must save her!"
Nora reluctantly let go of Sophia's hand and walked out of the operating room.
However, as soon as her voice faded, Sophia's breathing became erratic again, and her condition became extremely unstable. Her will to live seemed to diminish.
Rhys frowned, puzzled, but then he remembered something.
There had been many cases where a patient's heart stopped, but they revived when a loved one or someone they cared about spoke to them.
There was once a case where an elderly woman's heart had stopped, but when her family played a video of her beloved grandson calling her, her heart started beating again.
Rhys seemed to understand and immediately called for Nora, "Nora, quickly change into sterile clothes and come help with the surgery."
Nora didn't know why she was needed inside, but to help Sophia, she followed the nurse to change into sterile clothes without asking questions.
Rylan suddenly asked, "Can I go in too?"
Rhys looked at him in confusion, "Who are you to Sophia?"
Isaac also looked at Rylan.
According to Wesley's investigation, it was Rylan who brought Sophia to the hospital.
Moreover, after Sophia was brought to the hospital, she gave birth to a son, and the father's name on the birth certificate was Rylan.
Rylan was the CEO of DK Entertainment Inc., a well-known entertainment mogul. How could he be the father of Sophia's child?
