Chapter 567 Barrett Is Saved

Nora and Isaac looked at Lora again.

Lora looked haggard, her eyes red and swollen from crying, and she was still shedding tears.

After crying for a while, she finally spoke, "Mrs. Foster, I was hired by Mr. Mortimer Radcliffe to be your stand-in, but at first, I only had a similar build to you, not much resemblance in appearance. So he asked me to undergo plastic surgery to look like you."

"After I had the surgery to look like you, Mr. Mortimer Radcliffe often stared at my face in a daze and gave me a name similar to yours, calling me Lora. He would say things to me that he couldn't say to you."

Nora impatiently interrupted her, "If you're just here to tell me how deeply Mortimer feels about me, you don't need to. I don't want to hear it."

Lora wiped her tears and choked out, "I'm sorry, I just felt that Mr. Mortimer Radcliffe was suffering so much, I couldn't help but feel sorry for him and wanted to convey his feelings to you."

Nora sneered inwardly.

Did his suffering justify hurting others?

Seeing that Nora didn't respond, Lora continued, "A few months ago, Mr. Mortimer Radcliffe said he wanted a child and asked me to help him have one."

"I originally thought he wanted to have a child with me, and I was overjoyed."

"But then, he somehow got hold of an egg, combined it with his sperm to create a test-tube baby, and asked me to carry it."

Lora felt a pang of sadness.

She could guess whose egg it was, but since Mortimer hadn't said it outright, she didn't want to speculate.

She choked up, saying, "More than two months ago, Mr. Mortimer Radcliffe suddenly called me and asked me to have the doctor save the baby's umbilical cord blood during delivery and bring it back to you."

"But I didn't have the proper equipment to transport the umbilical cord blood back to the country, so I brought back the storage receipt from the foreign hospital. If you need it, you can take this receipt to the hospital to retrieve the umbilical cord blood."

Nora and Isaac were both shocked.

They both guessed a possibility.

The egg used for the child Lora mentioned might be Nora's egg.

Given Mortimer's obsession with Nora, it was highly likely he would do that. Moreover, Nora had fainted several times around Mortimer, giving him the opportunity to have someone take her egg.

Nora was furious, her face twisting in anger, and her fists clenched tightly.

If Elder weren't here, she would have cursed out loud!

"That bastard!" Elder slammed the table forcefully, his face dark, "I didn't expect him to do so many foolish things!"

Nora suppressed her anger and took the receipt from Lora's hand.

Her feelings were complicated, not knowing whether to be happy or angry.

Mortimer had stolen her egg to have a child, which was infuriating.

But if he hadn't done this, there wouldn't be any umbilical cord blood. With this umbilical cord blood, there might be hope for Barrett's illness to be cured.

Her emotions were very complex at that moment.

Nora said to Elder, "Mr. Elder Radcliffe, I'll go handle Barrett's situation first. Once it's taken care of, I'll come back to discuss the child's matter with you."

Elder nodded, "Alright, you go ahead."

Nora and Isaac immediately left The Radcliffe Mansion and informed Rhys on the way, asking him to bring the equipment and the receipt to the foreign hospital to retrieve the umbilical cord blood and see if it could match Barrett and be used to treat him.

Rhys took the receipt and went abroad alone.

For the next week, he was out of contact.

Nora and Isaac made numerous calls, but Rhys didn't answer or respond to messages.

Nora was extremely anxious.

What was Rhys doing? Why wasn't he answering the phone? Was the umbilical cord blood useful or not? He should at least say something!

Meanwhile, Barrett was in a state of near-constant sleep, unable to wake up even to eat.

Nora watched Barrett grow more haggard by the day and cried every day.

One day, Barrett suddenly started having a nosebleed while he was unconscious, and it wouldn't stop.

He even stopped breathing at one point.

Nora was terrified and immediately took Barrett to the hospital with Isaac.

The doctors performed emergency resuscitation, but ultimately issued a critical condition notice.

Seeing the doctor take out the critical condition notice, Nora almost fainted, and Isaac had to sign it.

After an hour of resuscitation, the doctor came out of the operating room with a heavy expression, "The patient's condition is very serious. We've done our best, but we can't stabilize his condition. Right now, we're using a pacemaker to keep his body functioning, but if we turn off the machine, he will stop breathing immediately."

"My suggestion is to not let the child suffer any longer. Even if he stays alive with the machine, it's just his body that's not dead. He won't regain consciousness."

Nora wobbled and collapsed into Isaac's arms.

She hadn't even had time to grieve when a figure suddenly ran down the hallway, panting, "How is Barrett? I saw your messages as soon as I got off the plane and rushed to the hospital. I'm not too late, am I?"

Everyone perked up, and Isaac was the first to react, "Quick, change into surgical clothes and go in. Barrett is still inside, and the doctors are advising us to give up treatment."

Rhys handed a box to the doctor, "Take this box and sterilize it. Be careful not to damage what's inside."

The doctor called a nurse to sterilize the box and take it into the operating room.

Rhys quickly changed into surgical clothes and went into the operating room.

Nora and Isaac continued to wait outside the operating room.

They weren't sure if Rhys could save Barrett, so they could only pray.

After three hours, the operating room door opened, and Rhys was the first to come out.

Nora and Isaac hurriedly asked, "How is it?"

Rhys smiled, "It was a success. Barrett is no longer in danger!"

Nora and Isaac finally breathed a sigh of relief.

Nora cried tears of joy, saying, "That's great, Barrett doesn't have to die!"

Isaac also let out a long breath.

Then he said to Rhys, "Why didn't you answer the phone or respond to messages all this time? I thought something had happened to you."

Rhys smiled, "I was busy developing the antidote. As soon as I got the umbilical cord blood, I borrowed a local lab and worked day and night. I left my communication devices outside, so I couldn't contact you."

Isaac replied, "You've worked hard this time. If you need anything, just let me know, and I'll do my best to arrange it for you."

Rhys's eyes lit up as he started thinking about what his lab was missing and what needed upgrading.

Nora accompanied Barrett to the ward.

After staying in the hospital for another week, Barrett fully recovered, and Nora took him home.
