Chapter 539 Misunderstanding Him, Let Him Slap

Nora woke up to find herself in a hospital with an IV drip attached to her hand.

Mortimer was sitting by the bedside.

Seeing her awake, Mortimer hurriedly asked with concern, "You're awake? Are you feeling uncomfortable anywhere?"

Nora stared blankly at Mortimer.

Scenes from before she lost consciousness began to flash in her mind.

A suffocating pain surged in her chest, and tears uncontrollably welled up in her eyes.

"Why are you crying? Don't cry, your eyes are still swollen. Crying too much is bad for your eyes."

Mortimer comforted her gently while reaching out to wipe her tears.

Nora angrily pushed his hand away and then slapped him hard.

The sound was loud.

A red handprint appeared on Mortimer's face.

With a sobbing voice, Nora angrily shouted, "Get out, I don't need your concern!"

"I told you, if you didn't let me save Soren, I would hate you for the rest of my life!"

"Soren's death is partly your fault too!"

"Leave, and don't ever appear in front of me again. I never want to see you again!"

Nora was very emotional.

Thinking about Soren's tragic death in front of her, knowing she could have saved her but missed the chance because of Mortimer's obstruction, made her heart ache unbearably.

Her hatred for Mortimer was uncontrollable.

No matter how much Mortimer had done for her in the past, it couldn't offset the hatred in her heart.

Seeing that he hadn't left, Nora sat up from the bed, grabbed a pillow and threw it at him, clenched her fists and hit him, angrily driving him away, "Leave, I don't want to see you. Seeing you reminds me of Soren. I will never forgive you!"

Nora cried with a face full of tears, in great pain.

Mortimer grabbed her wrists, forcibly controlling her, "Nora, don't be so agitated, the needle is backflowing."

"How can I not be agitated?" Nora's chest heaved violently with anger, tears uncontrollably flowing, "My daughter is dead, how can I not be agitated?"

"Soren is not dead!" Mortimer shouted.

Nora's voice stopped abruptly, she looked at Mortimer blankly, and the strength to resist disappeared instantly.

Her mind went blank.

After a few seconds, she trembled and asked, "What did you say? Soren is not dead?"

Without waiting for Mortimer to answer, she shook her head, denying herself, "How is that possible? I clearly saw the rope cut, Soren fell from such a high floor, how could she not be dead?"

Seeing her calm down a bit, Mortimer released her hands and said softly, "Soren is really not dead, I wouldn't joke about such a thing."

Nora stared at him blankly, trembling and asked, "Tell me, what exactly happened?"

She couldn't imagine how Soren survived falling from such a height.

There were no trees or anything like that next to the building, it couldn't be that she fell onto a tree, which cushioned the fall and reduced the impact, so she survived.

The ground below was all concrete, if Soren fell directly onto it, she would surely die.

But Mortimer didn't seem to be lying.

He had no reason to deceive her about such a thing, because such a lie would be easily exposed.

Mortimer took a tissue, wiped her tears while explaining, "I was late to the rooftop because I arranged for my men to carry out the rescue."

"The position where Soren was hanging was directly below a window of the building. I had someone climb out from the window of the lower floor to try to rescue Soren."

"I also had people downstairs use clothes to pull up a rescue bed, in case the rescue from above failed and Soren fell, falling onto the clothes would cushion the fall and reduce the damage."

"Initially, I wanted to delay time in the building to give the people on the lower floor enough time to rescue Soren."

"But they were too anxious, my people hadn't had time to rescue her when they cut the rope."

"Fortunately, they caught Soren as she fell."

"And luckily, Soren is light, they were able to catch her and rescue her directly from the lower floor."

Listening to Mortimer's explanation, Nora's heart fluctuated.

Finally hearing that Soren was okay, she let out a long sigh of relief.

But until she saw Soren, she couldn't completely believe his words.

"Where is Soren? I want to see her."

Mortimer said, "Soren was frightened, I had someone take her to see a psychologist. After the psychologist's counseling, she relaxed and fell asleep."

"If you want to see her now, you can. I'll take you there. She shouldn't be scared when she sees you, and we won't worry about waking her up."

Nora immediately lifted the quilt, intending to get out of bed.

Mortimer held her down, "Don't move yet, I'll get a nurse to remove the needle first. It won't take long."

Nora had to stay in bed and wait for the nurse.

The nurse came quickly.

After the needle was removed, she immediately asked Mortimer to take her to see Soren.

Soren's ward was not far from hers, and they soon reached the door.

There was someone guarding the door, who whispered when they arrived, "Soren is still sleeping."

Mortimer nodded.

He gently opened the door, letting Nora go in alone.

Nora walked into the ward quietly.

When she saw that the person lying on the bed was indeed Soren, tears uncontrollably welled up in her eyes again.

Nora thought, 'Thank goodness. It's really Soren! Soren's really not dead!'

Nora was so excited that she trembled all over, crying and laughing.

She carefully walked to the bedside, her steps light, making no sound, afraid of waking Soren.

After slowly reaching the bedside, she trembled and raised her hand, gently touching Soren's little face.

The real touch made her heart completely settle down.

This was really her Soren. Her Soren was still alive.

She wasn't dreaming, nor was it her imagination.

Nora's tears kept falling, tears of joy.

She stood by the bed, staring at Soren for a long time.

No matter how long she looked, it wasn't enough.

Until her legs went numb from standing, she tucked Soren in, then quietly walked out of the ward and gently closed the door.

Mortimer was still waiting at the door.

Seeing her come out, he didn't speak, afraid of waking Soren, and gestured for her to move a bit further away before talking.

Nora nodded and followed him silently.

After walking a distance, Mortimer smiled and said, "Now you should believe I wasn't lying to you, right?"

Nora looked embarrassed.

Seeing the red handprint still on his face, she apologized, "I'm sorry, I didn't listen to your explanation before hitting you."

"How about you slap me back, otherwise I won't feel right."

Mortimer raised an eyebrow, "Alright."

Nora immediately leaned her face over, closed her eyes, and waited for his slap.
