Chapter 116 Counterattack
But Manager Baker seemed to be aggrieved. He took out his phone with an unhappy expression, "The news about the arrest operation this afternoon is circulating. Rock did save Mrs. L. There were pictures of them entering the hospital together - a handsome man and a beautiful woman. Many bystanders took photos, believing they were a married couple. Darcy, I have the photos. Why don't you let me explain..."
"What photos?" the icy voice interjected, without a moment’s hesitation.
A concealed smile tugged at the corners of Darcy's mouth.
Manager Baker exchanged a glance with Darcy and then immediately handed him the phone. "CEO, it was unintentionally taken and sent to me by a subordinate. I asked her if she is Mrs. L..."
L stared at the photo anxiously, where Winnie was supporting Rock, paying fees, entering the hospital room, and taking care of him meticulously.
A cold sneer escaped his lips, a shiver of chilliness running through him.
Darcy lowered her head, squinting slightly, waiting for him to explode in fury upon seeing these photos.
She pretended to glance at the photos and advised, "Mr. L, please don't get angry just yet. At least listen to Mrs. L's explanation... And these photos shouldn't be made public or let your father know. He already has a dislike for Mrs. L, and if he misunderstands and causes trouble for you..."
While it appeared as if she was considering everything in his best interest, but mentioning L's father inadvertently would only further fuel Mr. L's anger towards Winnie.
Winnie was causing trouble, entangling herself with Rock. Once caught by her, she would be "well-used."
Winnie listened to the entire conversation from the kitchen, a faint, cold smile playing on her lips.
These were Darcy's usual tricks, manipulating others to do the dirty work, no wonder she couldn't find any leverage.
She could almost feel the expanding chill from L.
Suddenly, L put aside the phone. His handsome face didn’t betray surprise or anger; only a chilling tone pervaded his voice. "I already know about this."
Darcy was taken aback!
L smirked coldly, "Mrs. L confessed voluntarily. To make me happy, she even canceled the Triton and the Harrington Group collaborations."
Satisfaction flickered in his eyes.
Darcy's pupils abruptly contracted. How was that possible?
Just then, a woman's exclamation rang out from the kitchen.
Luke was startled. "Mrs. L, did you get spattered with oil?"
"What’s wrong? Winnie, come out," L's heart raced, and he was drawn to the kitchen, furrowing his brows and leaning in.
Winnie intentionally allowed herself to be splattered with oil. It was her time to shine. She stepped out of the kitchen, her apricot eyes scanning Darcy's rigid expression.
Darcy didn't expect Winnie’s presence in the kitchen. She had spread false rumors, and Winnie must have overheard.
She didn't mind, confronting Winnie coldly. After all, Winnie had already seen through her facade.
Looking at Darcy now, Winnie was reminded of the criminals and Ava's backers, sending a chill down her spine. This was such a terrifying woman, who had set up such a complicated trap against her.
But it was time for her to fight back.
Winnie, feigning discomfort, walked towards L, whining, "Water got mixed with the oil."
"You silly girl," L furrowed his brows, "Let me have a look."
Winnie extended her index finger, hoping he would touch it.
Unexpectedly, he put her little finger into his mouth, not minding the presence of others, and softly scolded her, "You call yourself foolish. Imagine how dumb your child would be if you have one."
Winnie blushed, turned her head, and finally noticed Darcy, hastily withdrawing her hand.
"Come out, someone is here! Darcy, good evening."
Even though Darcy was skilled at controlling her emotions, a touch of rigidity betrayed itself on her face.
Manager Baker glanced at the CEO of Imperial Jewelry, who was not angry but doting on Mrs. L, and then directed his attention to Darcy. They did not know how to continue their conversation smoothly.
Sweeping her gaze, Winnie found the situation rather amusing.
Darcy stared at Winnie, surprised by her newfound cleverness!
Wooing and seeking favor, along with taking the initiative to confess, this woman seemed to have changed her strategy.
Today, she had played her part well, neutralizing the trap that had been set.
Darcy quickly suppressed the stiffness at the corners of her eyes and smiled while L remained unaware. "I knew there was nothing between Mrs. L and Rock. Mr. L, rest assured, Manager Baker, please instruct your subordinates not to spread rumors. Mrs. L's reputation is of the utmost importance."
She maintained a positive demeanor, trying to ingratiate herself with L.
Winnie calmly curved her lips and said, "Thank you, Darcy, for placing your trust in me. Manager Baker, why don't you delete the photos as well? L, I believe Darcy was right just now. If the photos end up in the news and your family misunderstands me, it would be unfair to me and cause you trouble, don’t you think?"
"...Darcy."
Mr. L frowned and cast a cold glanced at Manager Baker. "Delete them! Both of you, keep a close eye on things. Ensure that these mundane photo’s don’t become news."
Darcy gritted her teeth and watched as Manager Baker deleted the photos on the spot. She and Manager Baker had to comply with the order to cover up this matter involving Winnie.
Darcy looked coldly at Winnie and quickly left with Manager Baker.
Outside the ward, Manager Baker complained, "Darcy, you were initially going to expose these photos to L's father. The Rodriguez family has never held a high opinion of Winnie, and L's father will deal with her. But Mrs. L's strategy is impressive."
Darcy's face darkened, and she sneered, "She has gotten smarter and started fighting back."
She had only been pretending to be good in front of Mr. L and mentioned L's father to exert pressure, attempting to make Mr. L angrier with Winnie.
Unexpectedly, this wicked woman was now fighting back against her!
Darcy's heart burned with fury. Did she think this would make her retreat? No way!
Inside the ward, L seemed oblivious to the silent confrontation between the two women.
Upon seeing Darcy’s setback, Winnie felt relieved.
With a cold smirk, Winnie thought about gathering evidence of Darcy's misconducts over the past few days, presenting the facts to L, and exposing this woman completely.
Turning her head, she met L's penetrating, icy gaze that cut like a knife.
"What's the matter?" A hint of unease made Winnie moisten her lips.
L glanced at her with a shadowed undertone. He observed her for a moment before speaking, "You've been acting a bit strange today."
Winnie's heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean?"
"About this morning, I expected you to be angry with Darcy again, but you weren't. You even thanked Rock for saving you earlier, and just now you were polite to Darcy. Does that mean you are not angry at me?"
Internally rolling her eyes, Winnie though, of course she was angry. However, she now intended to treat him as he treated her.
Putting on a composed smile, she responded, "No, not really. I think I should be more magnanimous. There is no point in you being caught between two women. She's an outsider, but I'm the one who’s close to you."
Taken aback by her change, especially compared to Darcy's considerate behavior, he found her enduring and perplexing.
Almost instinctively, he grasped her wrist and fixed his gaze on her face, which still bore traces of resentment. After a moment of silence, he spoke icily, "If you really don't like her, I will find a way to make her leave, however it will take time."
Winnie looked up suddenly, shocked by his willingness to make such a concession and indulge her.
