Chapter 143 You'll Eventually Break Ties with Him
He crouched down with his long legs and touched her body again, frowning and questioning, "Why were you sleeping on the floor? Your body is freezing, you've caught a cold! Don't you know you're pregnant?"
Pregnant, with a child in her belly. His words stabbed Winnie even more.
She distanced herself, throwing off his arm, full of coldness in her eyes, and her heart trembled slightly.
"I told you, don't touch me!"
"What do you mean?" L's strong arms dropped, revealing some anger. "Why are you throwing a tantrum? I know I made you unhappy by leaving you at the hotel this afternoon, but Darcy's situation is terrible. She cut her wrists, and if she had been taken to the hospital a second later, she would've died!"
In this situation, did she really have the face to confront him at home? Had he been indulging Winnie too much recently?
Her icy gaze was unfamiliar, carrying a hint of hatred.
A slight panic rose in L's heart. Why was she looking at him like this? Just because he neglected her and her uncle?
A tinge of anger ignited in his chest, but he suppressed it and reasoned with her.
"Winnie, you should know better. You can have dinner with your uncle at any time. Darcy is currently suffering from depression and suicidal thoughts. It's my responsibility as well because I suggested she start dating and pushed her. I didn't expect her to be so self-destructive and end up with someone like Ystad's jerk, being lewd and lascivious, almost crossed the line. Do you have any empathy? Did you find out that I transferred her to Lymington for treatment?"
Seeing her silence, L was certain of his guess. His gaze turned cold.
"She's in an extremely unstable condition. I have no choice but to explain to the Ordelia family, given that this happened under my jurisdiction at the subsidiary. Can't you understand?"
Winnie was slow to react, not paying attention to Darcy's affairs.
In her mind, she only held onto his question, "Do you have any empathy?"
She laughed, a bitter and grating laugh, wanting to ask him in return, where was his empathy? He had sympathy for Darcy, but not for Cameron and Irene, not for her?
Why could he trap her and treat her as a plaything so nonchalantly, using the shackles of love, after orchestrating the deaths of her family through business entanglements?
Winnie couldn't see through his eyes anymore. Once, she thought those eyes were bewitching and profound, harboring deep wisdom.
Now, she understood where that aura came from. It stemmed from his ambition!
Winnie sneered, her gaze icy and filled with deep hatred as she looked at him. "Is she dead? Was she violated? No. Can I understand you? No, I won't understand you!"
Her eyes were bloodshot, reflecting intense determination. Her response spoke to a different question!
If he really caused the deaths of her mother and Cameron, she would never forgive him.
But clearly, her uncle was the witness, and he was already a criminal.
Winnie, in anguish, covered her cheeks while L failed to comprehend the deep-seated animosity in her eyes.
Instead, he understood her words as a response to the current situation with Darcy.
He angrily pulled her closer, feeling incredulous as he gripped her wrist.
"What do you mean by that? She's not dead, she wasn't violated. Is that what upsets you? Winnie, you're being too malicious. From the beginning, it was unjust for you to drive her away. It was only because I spoiled you. Don't think too highly of yourself. What does it matter if you don't understand me over this matter? Do I still need your understanding?!"
His face held a coldness and towering arrogance.
Winnie's heart turned cold as she sneered. Yes, Lawrence R, who else does he need understanding from? He had always been the ruthless Lawrence R.
It was her own foolishness that blinded her, mistaking hatred for love...
That day in the office, she said she only had one uncle left. He said she would have him from now on.
Was it a hint of remorse from him or just his flawless performance?
Winnie stared, her bloodshot eyes lifting to meet his, finally giving him one last chance. "L, do you really not know Cameron Granger?"
L furrowed his brows at her sudden change in topic.
But he hadn't revealed his identity yet. The involvement between Imperial and Triton in the past, she would have to know he was Lawrence R first for him to explain!
His answer mirrored the one from the office, "I said I don't know him. What's the purpose of asking again?"
Tears welled up in Winnie's eyes.
The meaning and emotions poured out, and all her strength was drained. As long as he admitted it, as long as he showed a hint of remorse.
But he didn't.
She let out a cold, hollow laugh and turned towards the changing room, quickly taking out two pieces of clothing.
"What are you doing?" L angrily interfered and snatched the clothes from her.
Winnie couldn't face him anymore. She felt suffocated. "I'm going to stay at Olivia's."
Was it necessary to argue with him over this trivial matter concerning Darcy?
"Whatever!" L's voice burst out with icy tone.
At that moment, his phone rang.
It was from the hospital, and Darcy's voice sounded unusually weak.
"L, I'm scared. I'm scared of everyone here. Can you please come and see me?"
"Wait, I'm coming." His voice turned cold as he glanced intentionally at that woman, speaking loudly.
He hung up the phone and immediately went downstairs to his car.
Winnie's clothes fell to the ground from her hands. She slowly squatted down, picking them up through teary eyes.
She heard Darcy's voice and knew for sure that he was going to the hospital to be with her.
Every time he had an argument with her, he always used Darcy to provoke her.
She also understood that now was the perfect opportunity for Darcy to make her move. But what did she still care about?
They had no future. None!
The sweet memories in this room suffocated her.
She wanted to shout and interrogate him about what happened in the past, but she couldn't jeopardize her uncle's safety.
Her uncle needed her.
But what about her love? Was it going to be broken like this? Her uncle said that sooner or later, she would be separated from him!
Trembling in pain, Winnie couldn't breathe. Her hand slowly touched her belly where the baby was moving vigorously, as if sensing her uneasiness.
What should she do with the child? She cried her heart out.
At two o'clock in the morning, Olivia opened the apartment door and saw a woman standing in the snow, frozen like a corpse. She was startled.
She hurriedly ran up and saw Winnie holding two pieces of clothing, not even carrying her luggage, walking into her house in a dazed and pale manner.
"Winnie! What happened to you? Did you have a fight with L because of Darcy's deceitful plan?"
Olivia supported Winnie's exhausted body on her shoulder while shivering from the cold, perhaps because her heart had turned cold as well.
"Everything has changed, Olivia..." Winnie cried helplessly, filled with despair.
In the private room at three in the morning, Benjamin and Jeremy felt hesitant to speak.
L's drinking was getting out of control.
His cold eyes stared out the window, the heavy snow covering every corner of the street, blanketing flower beds with a thick layer of frost.
He remembered the idea of taking her to see the snow in the morning when he got back home, and a hint of icy scorn twitched at his throat.
"L, you've had enough with two bottles of vodka. You can't drink anymore. Tell us, did you have another quarrel with Winnie?" Benjamin hesitantly asked.
