Chapter 738 Kicking Away Lawrence
"Bentley, you know Mr. Harper, right? You should vouch for Lawrence tonight. Go help him clear things up," Winnie finally sighed.
Bentley glanced at her, "Feeling sorry for him again?"
"I'm not. I just can't stand seeing people bully the weak, especially since I can't stand Mars," Winnie declared, her voice full of conviction.
Bentley gave her a knowing look. "Alright, I'll help you out, Lawrence's overly righteous ex-wife."
Winnie rolled her eyes, "You just enjoy teasing me."
Bentley chuckled, casually holding his wine glass as he made his way through the crowd. He arrived just in time to see Lawrence, looking fierce, kick a guy who had been shoving him to the ground.
"Ouch! It hurts! Lawrence actually kicked me, you all saw it!" the guy on the ground whined.
Lawrence twisted the man's arm behind his back, sneering, "If you hadn't made a move, would I have touched you? A grown man crying about a single kick. Pathetic."
His casual tone made everyone who had been shoving him feel ashamed.
Lawrence had this strong, intimidating vibe—calm yet terrifying. Even though he was the lowest-ranking person at the party tonight, his cold, sharp eyes made everyone around him wary.
Seeing that none of the young gentlemen dared to step forward to drive Lawrence away, Mars jumped in, "Lawrence, let go of Timothy Hayes' hand right now! How dare you assault someone and still act so arrogant?"
Bentley couldn't take it anymore and furrowed his brow, about to speak up.
Just then, a stern voice rang out, "What is all this commotion about?"
Mars turned his head and saw the distinguished face of a middle-aged man.
Ronnie's expression changed instantly, and he quickly stepped forward with a flattering demeanor. "Mr. King, there's a man named Lawrence who has been bullying Ms. Peterson. Everyone has been harassing Ms. Peterson. Everyone has been trying to reason with him, but he just assaulted Mr. Hayes."
So that's Adam King, Bentley thought, observing the stern-faced man.
With Ronnie's words, Adam's face darkened, and he looked coldly at Lawrence, "Are you the Lawrence everyone’s been talking about?"
Lawrence released Timothy's arm. Seeing the host of tonight's party appear, he didn't forget his mission. His cold, sharp features softened, and he said in a deep voice, "I am."
"Good!" Adam's words were icy.
Last night on Azure Isle, Adam was threatened by Olivia, who demanded that he reconsider not expelling Lawrence. He decided to observe Lawrence a bit longer.
Unexpectedly, Adam witnessed this scene at the party today. Lawrence was exactly as the rumors described!
Adam believed that it was most likely Lawrence who caused Alvin to fall into the sea.
"Who can explain what exactly happened?" Adam asked authoritatively.
Mars immediately stepped forward, "Mr. King, Lawrence was trying to bully Phoebe earlier, and we caught him in the act. Timothy couldn't stand it and told him to leave, and Lawrence hit him without a word."
"And he hit me, too!"
"He also pushed me!"
A group of wealthy men indignantly accused Lawrence, as if he had committed some heinous crime.
The onlookers around them were also babbling.
"Who invited Lawrence in?"
"Given his current status, he shouldn't even be here. Is he trying to secure a deal with Mr. King? If I were him, I'd be too embarrassed to show up."
"I heard he's trying to snag a rich girl. He tried to mess around with Ms. Peterson and got caught."
"Yeah, the Rodriguez Family has fallen. He's good-looking, so marrying into money is his quickest route back to the top. I didn't expect Lawrence, with all his pride, to stoop this low."
As Lawrence listened to their chatter, his handsome face grew colder. He saw right through the hypocrisy of these wealthy folks.
But tonight had really opened his eyes.
Seeing so many people testifying against him, Adam was starting to believe them.
Adam looked at Lawrence with growing disdain, "Young man, do you have anything to say for yourself?"
"Mr. King, I have nothing to say. I didn't bully Ms. Peterson. These people don't care about the truth; they're enjoying my downfall. After all, schadenfreude is a dark part of human nature." Lawrence's calm and composed demeanor made Adam frown.
This was quite different from what Adam had imagined. He noticed an unmistakable air of honesty and integrity in Lawrence's eyes.
However, thinking of how he had harmed Alvin, Adam's expression turned cold, "Based on your words alone, no one can believe you. With your character, the King Family does not welcome you. You should leave!"
Mars and Ronnie were thrilled. With Adam personally kicking him out, Lawrence could forget about any cooperation.
Just as they were about to badmouth Lawrence, a figure appeared, "Mr. King, I am Bentley, Mr. Harper's nephew. I know you are fair. May I say a few words?"
Adam looked at Bentley and nodded slightly, "So, you're Mr. Harper's nephew. What do you want to say?"
Bentley glanced at the disheveled yet proud Lawrence and smiled, "Mr. King, shouldn't we check the surveillance footage? Otherwise, if you just kick Lawrence out like this, people might say you're being autocratic. Checking the footage only takes a few seconds. It's simple. Then, the truth will be clear for all to see."
Upon hearing this, the wealthy men who had accused Lawrence turned pale.
"Mr. Jenkins, what do you mean? Are you accusing me of lying? I would never!" Phoebe was startled by Bentley's suggestion to check the footage and quickly stood up, questioning him with a wronged expression.
"Exactly, he hit me first. My hand might even be broken!" Timothy added.
"I'm not saying I don't believe you," Bentley said. "But this is Mr. King's party, and his reputation is at stake. If Mr. King checks the footage, Lawrence will have no grounds to argue, and no one can say Mr. King is unfair. Also, I'm doing this for Ms. Peterson, to ensure Lawrence has no chance to defend himself. If he bullied you, he should immediately kneel and apologize!"
Adam found this reasoning sound. After all, he was new to Trento City. Though he was the president's confidant and wielded immense power, he still needed to rule with virtue to avoid future accusations of using Alvin to settle personal grudges against Lawrence. "Alright, let's proceed as the young man from the Jenkins Family suggested," Adam said.
Phoebe's face completely changed, but she faked a smile, "Mr. Jenkins, you misunderstand me. I didn't force Lawrence. Everyone saw what happened. You can ask anyone, and they'll tell you I couldn't possibly be lying."
