Chapter 923 Jake is Released
"Don't worry, even if you end up with a scar, I'll take responsibility. If I can't, then my mom will! Even if you go bald, I won't let her dislike you!"
Bald?
Jeremy looked at himself in the mirror with a dark expression. His hairline on the right side had receded... this little idiot.
He had sharp eyebrows and bright eyes, with long, elegant eye corners. His eyebrows extended into his temples, giving him a deep and striking appearance. The receding hairline didn't really affect his looks, and he didn't care much about it.
"Do you really want me to get disfigured?" Jeremy pinched her cheek. "Clumsy."
"Because if you get disfigured and go bald, I can make my mom take responsibility for you..."
Mia spoke so softly that Jeremy didn't catch her helplessness.
"What happened just now? How did the hairdryer fall on my head?" Jeremy handed her a fresh towel to wipe her face.
Mia was anxious, her face turning bright red. "I-I didn't mean to, it was an accident. You have to believe me, Dad!"
"Did I blame you?" Jeremy's long fingers took her right hand. "Open it, let me wipe it for you."
"No, no... no way!"
"What's wrong?"
Mia clutched the hair in her hand, trembling, her eyes wide with panic. "Because... because my hands are clean, no need to wipe them!"
"I'm worried you might have burned yourself. Open your hand, let me check."
"No... You can't check." Her heart pounded like a drum, remembering Winnie's words to never let it be discovered.
'What's with this attitude?'
Jeremy's sharp gaze fell on her small hand. "Why can't I check? What's inside?"
"Nothing! Nothing at all. I just don't like washing my hands, okay? You're such a nag, I'm leaving!"
With that, Mia pushed him away and ran out of the bathroom.
"Slow down, why are you running so fast?" Jeremy frowned, his tall figure standing in front of the mirror. He glanced at his singed hair and then at the hairdryer.
Mia was acting very strange tonight.
Mia ran to the living room, quickly grabbed her small backpack, and stuffed the hair into the pocket. She even checked the ceiling for cameras, and when she found none, she let out a big sigh of relief.
She hoped her earlier chaos would make Jeremy think it was just an accident.
Soon, Jeremy came out of the bathroom.
Mia stood there, looking apologetic, clutching her backpack tightly. She was about to say she was leaving when Jeremy spoke up, "It's getting late. I'll have the maid make you some sweet soup with your favorite ingredients. After you eat, you can go upstairs and sleep, okay?"
He knew she was about to leave, and he felt a bit reluctant.
Who knew what the future held for their next meeting?
Mia pouted, looking at him, not wanting to leave either.
She cherished Jeremy's warm gaze and presence. She wanted to stay, even though she was worried about Olivia. Who knew if Jeremy would want to see her again in the future?
Thinking of this, she nodded. "I'll stay here tonight! Will you stay with me, Dad?"
"Of course." Jeremy held her hand and led her upstairs.
Mia clutched her backpack with one hand, never letting go.
Ray, waiting outside, received a call. "She insists on staying here. Come get her tomorrow. She's a handful."
Ray's throat tightened, and he wanted to curse. 'It's just a kid, what's the big deal?' He thought Mia was really pitiful. Her biological father was Sam, and now Jeremy was annoyed with her, too.
The next morning, Olivia met with Sam.
They sat in a café. Sam smirked while Olivia's face was calm. "I agree to your terms. I'll marry you. Now give me the antidote. Lynn said the poison will kill my dad in three days. If anything happens to him, you can forget about any deal."
Lynn had discussed this with Sam the day before.
Sam sneered at Olivia. "You verbally agree to marry me, but what if you back out on the wedding day? At least get the marriage certificate first. I'm not stupid!"
Olivia's face was cold. She had no intention of getting the certificate.
She planned to make Sam and Lynn dig their own graves on the wedding day.
She squinted, pretending to surrender. "What are you afraid of? I'm at your mercy now. Do you think I have any tricks left? Stop wasting time. Save my dad first. After he takes the antidote, we can get the certificate the day before the wedding."
Sam looked at her disdainfully. "I doubt you have any tricks left. Marrying me will drive Jeremy crazy. He won't care about you. As for Winnie, her influence in Trento City is nothing to worry about. Fine, I'll give you the antidote. We'll get the certificate the day before the wedding. Agree or not, it's your choice."
Olivia clenched her fists coldly. "I agree."
She was only waiting for the wedding day. She had no backup plan.
Sam stood up to call Lynn when Olivia's phone rang. It was the police station.
Sam noticed and stopped.
Olivia walked away to answer. "Hello?"
"Are you Jake's family? You can pick him up from the detention center. He's being released temporarily. The murder case is still under investigation, so he needs to be ready for questioning."
"What?" Olivia's eyes widened in shock. "Really?"
"Yes, please come quickly."
"Okay, okay." Olivia hung up, stunned, and ran back to Sam. "Where's the antidote? Give it to me!"
Sam had heard the conversation, his face darkening, eyes flashing with surprise.
Jake couldn't possibly be released! Winnie and Ray hadn't succeeded. Who did it?
His eyes turned sinister, slowly guessing it was Jeremy... only he could do it.
Sam's face tightened, glaring at Olivia. "You have some nerve. Your dad's out? Forget the antidote."
"What do you mean, going back on your word?" Olivia's brief joy turned to cold anxiety. Jake's life was still in their hands!
"Sam, we just agreed!" She grabbed Sam's collar. "Get the antidote from Lynn. We'll get the certificate the day before the wedding."
"That deal was based on your dad being locked up. Who helped you?"
"I didn't!" Olivia was shocked. How did Jake get released?
But there was no time to think. At least he was out!
