Chapter 949 Destroying Evidence
Louis lowered his gun, his mind racing with a whirlwind of thoughts, struggling to process the reality before him.
Could it be that these two kids were innocent all along, and it was Sam who had been manipulating everything, deceiving everyone, and taking advantage of women?
He sighed deeply, keeping his turbulent emotions hidden, and said gravely, "Bring her here. I want to see the child."
"Got it!" Ray, noticing Louis's change in attitude, ran to catch up with Jeremy and informed him, "Mia's in the car behind mine. I had my guys bring her along. I was driving too fast to have her in my car, so she should be here by now."
The two men walked to the road by the bay.
Jeremy scanned the area anxiously and asked, "Ray, where is she?"
Ray looked behind his sports car and saw no sign of his men's vehicle. He frowned, his expression quickly changing as he called his subordinate, Kai.
But Kai didn't answer. Ray's breathing grew tense.
Jeremy, watching the phone's busy signal, glared at Ray. "What do you mean? Kai isn't answering? Where's Mia?" Jeremy demanded, grabbing Ray by the collar. His voice was tight and his eyes were cold.
"Hold on..." Ray kept dialing Kai's number, but there was still no answer.
Jeremy couldn't wait any longer. He ran to Ray's car, jumped in, and hit the gas. "Ray!"
"I'm coming! Let's go find Kai's car. Maybe... maybe he broke down on the way?" Ray tried to reassure Jeremy, though he didn't believe it himself.
Jeremy's sharp eyes were filled with urgency. He had just learned about Mia's true identity; nothing could happen to her.
Jeremy gripped the steering wheel tightly, and the sports car sped down the road away from the bay.
"What are they doing?" Winnie, still at the villa entrance, heard the car and turned to see the two men leaving. She muttered in confusion.
"Didn't Mr. Martin say Mia was in the car he arranged?" Olivia stood up, looking around but seeing no other cars arriving. She grew anxious, clutching Winnie's hand. "Winnie, let's go check. Why hasn't Mia gotten out of the car yet?"
Louis turned to look at them, frowning. "No car has come in, and there's no sign of Mia. That's why Jeremy went after them."
"What?" Olivia's face turned pale as she stared into the distance. "What's going on, Winnie? Mia didn't come?"
Winnie hesitated, then walked to her car. "Mr. DeRoss, I want to take Olivia to see if anything happened. It's her daughter, and she's very worried. Please don't stop her."
Louis glanced at Olivia, withholding judgment. If Mia were indeed Jeremy's child, his favoritism would be different from how he treated Sam's daughter.
He stepped aside, leaning on his cane. "Go find Mia. We'll deal with everything else later."
"Thank you, Mr. DeRoss." Olivia felt his change in attitude and nodded gratefully before getting into Winnie's car.
She was anxious, her lips turning white. "Winnie, drive faster. Faster."
Winnie thought for a moment, then hit the steering wheel. "It's my fault. I should have handed Mia to your mother at the church. But Louis came back too quickly, ready to cause trouble. I couldn't take Mia with me, so I gave her to Ray. Mr. Martin's men should have been enough to keep Mia safe."
"It's my fault, Winnie." Olivia shook her head, covering her face. "I should have kept Mia with me. No matter what Jeremy did, you and Ray have done so much for us."
"Maybe nothing happened. Maybe it's just traffic." Winnie tried to comfort her, though both of their hearts were uneasy.
Not long after, they saw Ray's sports car stop in the middle of the coastal road, the doors open.
Winnie felt a pang of dread and quickly parked the car. Before it even stopped, Olivia was already running out. She saw Jeremy and Ray standing by the roadside barrier.
Her heart leaped in fear. Could her daughter have been in an accident?
Praying it wasn't true, she ran over, shouting Jeremy's name. "Jeremy! Mia... Mia..."
As she got closer, Olivia saw a black car hanging off the road down the slope.
The car had crashed and flipped, the door open, and a man's body hanging lifelessly from the driver's seat.
"Shit, Kai?" Ray jumped over the barrier and ran down.
"Mia..." Jeremy was faster, leaping down to the car. He smashed the window with his elbow, searching inside. "Mia! Please be okay..."
But the driver's seat and backseat were empty.
Jeremy followed the car's crash path down the slope. If Mia had fallen, there would be blood.
She wasn't in the car... maybe she had been taken.
Jeremy's eyes turned red with realization.
He quickly climbed back up, his body drenched in cold sweat.
Olivia stood by the car, unable to find Mia. She ran to Jeremy, grabbing his sleeve. "She's not in the car, Jeremy. Where is she?"
"She might have been kidnapped."
Jeremy looked at her pale face, wiping her tears. "From the crash marks, they forced the car off the road. They had more than one car and launched a coordinated attack. Someone took Mia out of the car and dealt with Kai. They acted quickly, probably planned it, and there's no surveillance here."
Jeremy pointed to the streetlight, showing that there were no cameras.
"Damn it!" Ray closed Kai's eyes with his shirt, then stood up, his face cold. "Jeremy, I'm sorry. I didn't keep her safe. I think... it was Lynn. I got the paternity test and rushed over, thinking it was settled. I gave Mia to Kai and came ahead. No one expected this. Lynn must have done it. She failed once and tried again, kidnapping Mia when she couldn't stop me."
