Chapter 919 Unwilling to Believe Again
"Yeah!" Benjamin chimed in, unusually perceptive. "Mia, why don't you hang out in the car with me for a bit? I've got a bunch of lollipops here. When Jeremy's ready to see you, you can go in and keep him company, okay?"
"But..." Mia had a mission to complete.
However, those lollipops looked really tasty.
A conflicted Mia decided to go for the lollipops first. "Alright then. Mr. Martin, you have to make sure Jeremy sees me, okay?"
Ray felt a bit embarrassed; he wasn't sure he could promise that.
He straightened his suit, standing tall as he briskly walked towards the apartment. Lowering his voice, he asked his subordinate, "What's going on? Why is Jeremy so furious?"
The bodyguard replied, "Olivia is marrying Sam, and it's happening before Mr. DeRoss's wedding. Plus, today at the DeRoss Group hospital, Olivia publicly humiliated Mr. DeRoss, saying he was a man she discarded. When has Mr. DeRoss ever faced such humiliation?"
Ray felt a cold sweat break out on his forehead.
Olivia really didn't know what she was doing. He could almost hear Jeremy's pride shattering into pieces.
And marrying Sam? What was she thinking?
Ray needed to sort this out. After all, what Winnie had said on the phone didn't match this at all...
As he stepped into the living room, Ray felt like he had walked into an icebox. The strong smell of alcohol wafted over from the sofa.
On the long sofa, Jeremy sat with his legs crossed, his long legs sprawled carelessly under the table. He looked disheveled, his shirt half-open, shielding his eyes from the harsh light with his hand.
His lean muscles were faintly visible in the light, and there were some wounds on his body, oozing small beads of blood.
Ray glanced at the empty bottles and questioned the bodyguard, "Where did he go to get into a fight? How can he drink when he's injured? Jeremy, are you trying to kill yourself?"
Angry, Ray picked up a bottle and, in a harsh move, poured the remaining alcohol onto Jeremy's wounds.
Jeremy sluggishly lifted his eyes, which had a mischievous, defiant look.
He wasn't wearing his glasses.
The bodyguard hurriedly pushed Ray's hand away and supported Jeremy, answering in a low voice, "Mr. DeRoss broke a few of his subordinates' legs this afternoon. He got injured too."
"Serves him right, being so dramatic." Ray felt both pained and speechless. He nudged Jeremy with his foot. "Wake up, Jeremy!"
"Not drunk." Jeremy, in a daze, shifted his position, opening his cold eyes that gleamed with a chilling light. He looked at Ray and smiled. "Why are you back from Trento City?"
"Are you really going to marry Lynn?" Ray sat down beside him.
"Olivia is marrying Sam. Why can't I marry Lynn?" Jeremy laughed nonchalantly.
"You're out of your mind!"
"What are you doing back here?"
"To check on you! I brought someone back with me." Ray touched his nose, preparing to relay Winnie's message. He spoke seriously, "Jeremy, you're usually a mature person. Let's handle our issues seriously.
Listen... I'm here to advise you. If you don't save Olivia's father today, you might regret it later."
"Regret it?" Jeremy's eyes turned bloodshot. "As the heir to the DeRoss Family, do I need to please a fickle woman who means nothing? What's so special about Olivia? Is she beautiful or just good in bed? She's probably good in bed, given all her practice."
"Why should I save her father? Hasn't she repaid kindness with ingratitude enough?"
"You're just angry!" Ray stood up, held Jeremy's face, and looked into his eyes.
Ray swallowed hard, speaking earnestly, "Sometimes, harsh words said in the heat of the moment aren't true. Don't take them at face value."
"Once might be a misunderstanding, but what about twice or three times? I'm not so pathetic that I need to lie to myself!"
"Maybe Olivia was just using you to deal with Lynn today. She does care about you!"
Jeremy squinted at him, then suddenly let out a cold laugh. "Winnie sent you, didn't she? These two women will stop at nothing to achieve their goals. Hasn't Winnie used Lawrence enough?"
His harsh laugh left Ray silent.
Ray suddenly stared at Jeremy. "Yes, Winnie sent me to talk to you. Because, as outsiders, we see things more clearly. We know some truths you don't!"
"Like Olivia loves me?" Jeremy's eyes were icy. "You all are really going all out to get me to save her father!"
Ray shook his head, his gaze also cold. "I don't know if Olivia loves you. But I suspect the child she's carrying is yours, you idiot! If you don't save her father, how will you acknowledge your child in the future? I'm trying to help you, wake up and stop believing Olivia's surface lies!"
Jeremy felt a sharp pain in his heart.
Ray said the child was his? A flicker of pain crossed his eyes. He was pathetic; he liked hearing that the child was his.
He dreamed that the child was his.
But unfortunately, it wasn't!
Jeremy was silent for a few seconds, then suddenly shoved Ray's arm away. His handsome face twisted with extreme anger. "Do you think I'll believe you now?"
"It's true, Winnie hinted at it! That child is yours and Olivia's..."
Jeremy shook his head, resolute and furious, his eyes glistening with dark tears, a deep red. "Stop lying to me. I asked her today, and I told myself it was the last time.
That filthy woman, her answer never changed. She said she might have conceived after being with me.
Ray, I really... feel disgusted.
Men shouldn't get involved in love. You think she's a pure white lotus blooming just for you, but she's not. She's done everything behind your back. I've paid a heavy price for my affection.
This life should be about wielding a knife and killing. If I want a woman, I'll pay for it. What joy can't I buy?"
He smashed the glass on the table, the loud crash shattering the oppressive silence and cold in the room.
Ray looked at him, his once dashing profile now so lost and desolate.
It seemed Olivia had hurt him deeply.
He couldn't see the truth anymore; all his perceptions were controlled by Olivia's every move.
Jeremy seemed fierce, but in reality, he was like a kite still held by Olivia. Who was really rejecting whom now? How did things get this way between them?
"There's really a misunderstanding here. Don't believe what she said. Believe what I'm saying! Jeremy..."
"I've asked her over and over. I've long given up hope. Do you think I'll believe you?" Jeremy wiped his lips harshly, his beautiful, thin lips curling into a dark, cold smile. "Just leave!"
