Chapter 907 Winnie Arrives
Iris's nails dug into her palm, drawing blood. Ignoring Ryder's frantic warning look, she swallowed her resentment and raised her head to look at Olivia with a cold smile. "Begging us won't help your dad's situation. We can't make the decision, Ms. Smith. Your father will be convicted of intentional murder..."
Iris lowered her voice, "My husband's sister is Mrs. DeRoss."
Olivia paused, as if she didn't understand. Slowly, she looked up in shock.
Iris's smile was pained. "Do you get it now? The Thomas Family has powerful backing. If you have the guts, go find the DeRoss Family."
Olivia was stunned. She understood.
Theodosia? She had heard of her. Sam and Jeremy were half-brothers.
She felt like she had been struck, suddenly clear-headed.
This involved the DeRoss Family and Theodosia, which meant...
Her teeth clenched, and she let out a cold, trembling breath.
After all this time, it turned out the Smith Family had been set up.
Sam, you bastard, what grudge do you have against me?
Olivia left Ryder's hospital room in a daze, with Finn following closely behind. She turned and elbowed him hard. "Didn't Joshua ever mention he was close with Sam?"
"No... he never told me."
"You idiot! My dad got hurt because of you. Joshua used you to get to my dad! Why didn't you check the Thomas Group's backing when you were helping them with the loan? It's the DeRoss Family!"
Finn looked bewildered. "Olivia, it's not my fault, I didn't know!
But everything you said makes sense. You're much smarter than I am, and your analysis is spot on.
I just realized that Joshua's approach to me was a setup from the start.
And about that doubt you mentioned, I suddenly remembered that I could testify for Jake. He didn't kill on purpose! I vaguely heard what Joshua said to him. Jake was provoked by Joshua, and that's why he acted out!"
"What did he say? Tell me!" Olivia was desperate.
Finn tried to recall, "I was locked in the next room. I vaguely heard Joshua talking to Jake about you, insulting you, saying you were pregnant again in Trento City. He was really degrading Jake, calling you the most disgusting slut in Lymington... Jake lost it. He didn't believe it and asked Joshua where he got the information. Then I heard the sounds of a fight... Joshua must have kept provoking him, and Jake went crazy."
Finn saw Olivia's eyes widen, tears welling up.
Finn also looked pained, "Even I know that the thing that hurt Jake the most over the years was you being violated and having a child. He's been mocked for years, and people said that his glorious life was ruined by his daughter. He's been depressed for years."
Olivia's eyes widened in pain, half-bent, covering her tear-streaked face. She clawed at the cold wall, "Dad... Dad... I'm sorry, I've embarrassed you again! Dad..."
Jake's mental state had been unstable for years. He resented her, but how could a father not love and protect his daughter?
Olivia's heart ached like it was being cut. He couldn't take it anymore, couldn't take Joshua's insults! He lashed out.
And the news of her pregnancy, only a few people in Trento City knew.
Including Sam, that bastard.
It was him... it had to be him who told Joshua to provoke Jake, pushing him to act first, leading to the tragedy.
No... Olivia refused to believe that Jake, in his condition, could accidentally kill Joshua on the spot.
Joshua's death might have another story. If Sam planned this, there must be more to it!
She wiped her tears fiercely and rushed out of the hospital.
She went to the detention center again, but the police still wouldn't let her see Jake!
Olivia returned home, took out her computer, and spent some time hacking into the police's confidential case management system to retrieve the full surveillance footage from Joshua's office.
Finn had heard Joshua provoking Jake.
If she could isolate and restore the audio of Joshua's insults, it might be key in court to explain why Jake acted first. The Thomas Family was relentless, and they couldn't access Joshua's body. Everything was against Jake.
She spent the night in the computer room, trying to extract Joshua's insulting words.
As dawn approached, the Smith Family's door was suddenly knocked on.
Yasmin, who hadn't slept either, quickly went to the door and cautiously looked through the peephole.
She was stunned, then delightedly opened the door, "Winnie?"
"Mrs. Smith! Where's Olivia?"
Winnie, in a fitted light coat and flat shoes, dragged a small suitcase and looked weary and cold.
Yasmin immediately pointed to the study, "Olivia's in there working on some surveillance footage."
"Olivia!" Winnie rushed to the room, her brows furrowed in anger, and shouted.
Olivia's neck shrank. Hearing her voice, she remembered she had been so frantic she forgot to tell Winnie she had returned.
She stood up, a bit dizzy, and went to open the door.
Winnie pushed it open, standing there imposingly, looking Olivia up and down. Her eyes were swollen, and her face was pale and thinner.
Winnie's anger dissipated, her voice hoarse, "When will you ever consider me a friend?
Olivia, your dad's in such trouble, and you didn't think to tell me first? You ran back to Lymington alone? Did you handle it?"
Winnie was exasperated.
But Olivia knew she had every right to be angry.
She lowered her eyes, embarrassed, "I was really in a hurry, Winnie, I'm sorry."
"You're used to handling problems alone. I'm a terrible friend!" Winnie hugged her tightly.
As she fell into her embrace, Olivia's tears, which had been hanging in her eyes, fell again.
Her facade of strength crumbled, her anxiety laid bare.
Winnie gently wiped away her tears, looked into her eyes, and spoke calmly, "Alright, I'm back. Listen, as long as I'm here, do you think I can't move a police station?"
Her tone was steady.
Olivia took a deep breath, realizing she had been so frantic she forgot Winnie's current status. Maybe she could help her see her dad.
"Winnie..."
"Come with me. We're going to the police station to see Mr. Smith."
