Chapter 85 Learning the Truth Behind Her Beating
But he still remained cold.
"You are innocent now, but maybe Mr. Swift didn't mean to offend you," he casually sneered.
"I won't confess to something I didn't do. I know you're a business mogul who looks down on female entrepreneurs, but I still have my principles. Whether you believe me or not is entirely up to you," Winnie said with a faint smile.
As a gust of warm air brushed her cherry lips, making them look even more beautiful, Lawrence R's gaze darkened. Damn, he missed that mouth.
His Adam's apple moved, and although his tone remained cold, he hinted at mockery. "Congratulations. Originally, you were sentenced to life imprisonment. Who was blind enough to save you? Your husband?"
Winnie was shocked. Life imprisonment? She murmured, "My friend said it would be a sentence of just over a decade."
"Life imprisonment is just a metaphor, an exaggerated expression," he explained with indifference.
"Understood." Winnie conceded.
The man glanced coldly at Winnie, not in a friendly tone, and said, "Billions of dollars' worth of fake diamonds. The Harrington family is suing you, and they want to give you a life sentence. They can't be bothered with the effort." Winnie's blood ran cold for a moment.
The man sneered, his voice cool and thin. "Do you think your ex can really save you? The old Mr. Harrington has a terrible temper. Would he bring upon himself the wrath of the Davis family just for you?"
"...Why is he so furious?" Winnie wondered. However, after his reminder, Winnie carefully considered and realized that Old Mr. Davis was indeed cunning. It was unlikely that with just a few words, he could make a deal with the Harrington family regarding a love child.
Olivia had also mentioned that Daniel was insignificant at the time, as she only saw him by Winnie's side...
"Do you know of what happened that night? Then who do you say saved me?" Lawrence R was infuriating her, his handsome face showcasing a cold smile.
"Besides a husband saving his wife, who else would save someone else's wife? Is it because you're prettier?" Lawrence uttered this statement indifferently.
"...Winne's young face stiffened. She had also considered this, but Lawrence R never said he saved her from the beginning. He came barging in, fighting and scolding her.
The woman's face showed her grievances, her eyes welling up with tears.
In the past few days, Lawrence R had learned that he had been somewhat... hurtful with his words.
He refused to admit it, or to back down and so the cold war between them continued.
Now, as 'Lawrence R', he uncomfortably explained, "If your husband is angry with you, have you ever thought about the reason? Perhaps he put aside important matters to save you, going through all that trouble, only to see you, someone heartless and ungrateful, not only apologize to the person who saved your life but also get entangled with your ex. How do you think he feels? Isn't scolding you a normal reaction?"
The man's cold words made Winnie freeze. As realization seemingly washed over her, a new perspective put before her.
Thinking back to that night's intense argument, she was so angry that she didn't use her brain. It seemed like she was thanking Daniel when L burst in...
Later, when she was extremely angry, she sarcastically mentioned that it wasn't even something urgent for L to answer the phone at night...
If L was the one who saved her, then he had seriously misunderstood? No wonder he was so angry with her.
The woman gripped her delicate fingers tightly, her expression filled with regret, her face turning pale.
Lawrence R, seeing her change, thought he had made a mistake and felt remorse. His handsome eyes softened a bit.
However, unexpectedly, the little one stubbornly bit her lip, raised her head, and argued with him, "Even if he misunderstood, he shouldn't insult me unjustly like that. Does he know how much I've suffered?"
Lawrence R frowned and asked, "What have you suffered?" Wasn't it just a little scare?
Winnie's eyes glistened with shattered tears. Although the man in front of her was a stranger, she couldn't help but feel a sense of grievance. She rolled up her sleeves and coolly said,
"I was intentionally beaten in prison, and my child was in danger. Yet you men, only concerned about your dignity and jealousies, he didn't even notice my injuries, and he mocked me..."
"What?" the shock evident on Lawrence R’s face.
The man's pupils contracted as he saw the large bruises on her weak, pale wrist. His face froze. Had she been beaten in prison? Why didn't anyone inform him? He hadn't noticed that night... and had still scolded her like that.
Are the nurses dead too these days? His dark eyes froze with anger. How could someone so delicate endure such violence? Damn it, he had gone mad these past few days, utterly clueless.
"Do you... hurt?" he lowered his tone while asking.
"It's my heart that hurts more," Winnie gritted her teeth and lowered her sleeve stubbornly. "Just think about me vomiting endlessly in the restroom for his child, and all Daniel did was hand me a tissue. That blind fool actually accused me of kissing my ex. I'm so infuriated with that scumbag."
Lawrence R's handsome ink-black eyes stiffened. He didn't know how many more bruises she had on her body. She had also gotten thinner these days, and her eyes were brimming with tears as if in pain. His heart softened and he felt regret.
So, she was angry because he had neglected to show concern and had continued to mock her. The man's slender fingers reached out to find her small, delicate hand.
He really wanted to hold it and comfort her. Winnie sensed it and immediately withdrew, wary as if she were a little crab. "Lawrence R, what are you doing?"
The man's eyes narrowed. She still remembered that she was a married woman. That day in the restroom with Daniel... maybe it really was...
"Thank you for listening to my explanation today and for allowing me to vent so much," the woman picked up her bag and smiled as she walked away.
But before leaving she simply stated "Triton will gradually return to my hands, and you should beware of me as a worthy opponent, as the CEO of Imperial Jewelry."
The man leaned back in his chair, his long legs restless and nowhere to place them. His trousers revealed a tantalizing hint of his forbidden ankles, and his handmade leather shoes were as sharp as his stern face.
"Damn it." He squinted and clenched on her receding figure...
Luke immediately followed the CEO back to the office. The man's cold aura descended. "Find out what she went through that night in prison."
"And, why wasn't her case of bruises mentioned these past few days?" L had monitored the baby's condition daily. He didn't say it, but he was also observing her.
Darcy received a call from the hospital and went into the private office to take it. The voice on the other end spoke, "Miss Ordelia, Imperial Jewelry's CEO suddenly questioned why Winnie's medical records didn't mention her injuries. I replied that because she's pregnant, medication was not given, so the records didn't indicate any bruising."
Darcy paused. "You did well, keep your position as the director assured."
After hanging up the phone, Darcy narrowed her almond-shaped eyes. She had instructed the doctor to hide Winnie's injuries, intending to make Winnie misunderstand that Mr. L didn't care. They needed to have a falling out. Wasn't Mr. L still angry? Why was he suddenly concerned about Winnie?
A foreboding feeling washed over her as Darcy picked up a stack of documents and walked towards the CEO's office on the top floor.
Meanwhile, Luke reported, "I've asked the attending physician and the nurses. The medical records didn't mention the injuries because pregnant women shouldn't take medication. The nurses also mentioned that Mrs. L keeps insisting on not wanting anyone to know. She often went to the toilet for extended periods of time, probably secretly medicating himself."
What? Is his woman so hurt that she has to secretly medicate herself? Lawrence R felt a pang in his heart, wondering what he had neglected.
She said she was experiencing morning sickness, and as a soon-to-be father, he was eager to see his woman, to see their baby, and to give her medicine. Wasn’t it his obligation to offer comfort in her time of distress.
Lawrence R felt a surge of emotion, his voice cold and stern, "Dismiss that doctor!"
As soon as Darcy entered, she heard him reprimanding someone, all for Winnie? She curled her fingers, digging her nails into her palm.
Behind his desk, the man stood tall by the window, unmotivated to work. His brow furrowed, displaying restlessness and nobility in his suppressed manner, "Luke, call Benjamin and arrange a gathering tonight. It's been a while since we last met."
Huh? Lawrence R’s Position as Imperial Jewelry's CEO, made his character setting that of a workaholic. Darcy thought, In the past, when Mr. Martin invited him out to gatherings, he would brush Mr. Martin off.
Doubt filled her mind, but Luke followed the orders. He then heard the CEO casually but with deep intonation say, "Tell him to bring that woman."
"That woman?" Luke was puzzled.
