Chapter 240 Darcy's Slander.
Lawrence R didn't know how he endured those few hours standing outside the operating room at the hospital. His eyes were bloodshot, chain-smoking one cigarette after another. Ray and Benjamin quickly rushed over, followed by many others, including the police.
One after another, people in front of him kept recounting tonight's events. Darcy cried softly, covered in injuries. The director of the healing center spoke,
"Around 7 o'clock tonight, a girl disguised as a nurse broke into the hospital, using sedatives to incapacitate many nurses and abducted Miss Anderson. I was terrified and tried to contact you at that time. However, I couldn't reach you, so I wanted to show you the hospital's surveillance footage. But the signal couldn't be transmitted. Later, I had to contact Miss Ordelia to come to the healing center to discuss how to handle it."
"But I didn't make it to the healing center. Olivia kidnapped me!" Darcy explained with a look of injustice. "She and Winnie were both in the car, and she had someone tie me up..."
Upon arriving at an inn, there was a girl inside. Originally, it was Winnie's idea to have Olivia go to the hospital and find a girl who was selling her kidney. They planned to frame me for falsely donating a kidney to my godmother and forge evidence of my deceit, with the goal of making you, Mr. L, turn against me and falsely accusing me of wanting to harm her child, so that she could smoothly leave the sanatorium and go save Rock."
At the mention of Rock, Lawrence R's vacant pupils finally showed a reaction.
Knowing that words alone wouldn't be sufficient, Darcy presented two pieces of evidence. "Mr. L, these are the findings from Jeffrey's investigation. Olivia purchased two tickets to Trento City tonight, and here is the proof."
Lawrence R examined the evidence of the flight tickets signed by Olivia, scheduled for 8 PM, and finally sneered. She couldn't wait to escape and save her lover.
"They originally planned to eliminate me first and fabricate evidence to discredit me before you. But later, at the inn, they had a conflict with the girl and the hired thug they found because they couldn't agree on the price. Mr. L, Winnie is even crazier than you can imagine. She actually had the thug...," Darcy hesitated, making a dismissive gesture, as if afraid to continue speaking.
Lawrence furrowed his brow in disbelief. Miss Anderson had never dared to harm even a chicken in the villa before!
"At that time, chaos ensued. I was tied up, and Winnie and Olivia set the inn on fire, burning it down completely. Thankfully, Jeffrey arrived in time to save me! My throat was injured, but I was also worried about Winnie going into premature labor. I knew, Mr. L, that you care about the child, so I followed Jeffrey all the way here. But when we found the child, Winnie was nowhere to be seen, and I don't know if Olivia turned against the thug. In short, I don't know where they went."
In her hand, Darcy held two medical records: one as evidence of her throat being burned in the fire and the other as a physical examination report.
"Mr. L, to prove my innocence, I just underwent a medical examination. Once again, it confirms that I indeed only have one kidney left. Winnie has misunderstood me deeply, which is why she went to such extremes to frame me."
"She brought it upon herself. This woman is utterly venomous, capable of devising any wicked plan. She even set fires and committed murder, not to mention abandoning a child!" Ray coldly sneered, not mincing his words.
"You don't need to doubt it. I went with Darcy for her medical examination, and she does indeed have a single kidney left. Also, around 9 PM, Darcy did call me for help, saying she was trapped in the inn. Take a look at the call records!"
Lawrence R wearily pinched his brow, his eyes and heart deadened. "Luke, send someone to Trento City to interrogate Rock. Let's wait for the fish to take the bait."
"Mr. Rodriguez, I believe we can only confirm everything once we find the missing Miss Smith," Luke cautiously suggested.
Darcy's eyes chilled slightly as she calmly added, "Mr. L, after all that has been seen and heard, it's best to approach this matter cautiously."
"Would you like me to speak up on my behalf? Or perhaps confront Miss Smith?" Darcy asked.
"You have evidence of your throat being burned and your wrists being bound. This is how Winnie, desperate to rescue Rock and eager to accuse you, used you as a bargaining chip in negotiations!"
Lawrence R sneered deeply, closing his eyes only to see the bloodstains of the other child falling off a cliff, countless times washing away his hatred and replacing it with despair.
He thought of the woman in the sanatorium repeatedly finding excuses to accuse Darcy of harming her, begging him to release her with that look on her face.
Lawrence R firmly believed that just because he had her locked up, she could retaliate against him with the premature birth of their child.
Enough with talk of love and hatred, they only tarnished him. He hated her to the core.
"Go find Olivia," he said with disdain, "someone has to be punished to ease the hatred in my heart!"
Luke shivered, unsure whether he should still look for Miss Smith. Darcy's eyes softened and she secretly smiled, it seemed she had successfully bitten back tonight.
The child was Mr. L's Achilles' heel, Winnie can't provide any evidence, and as for Olivia... well, she knows how to silence her!
Luke couldn't find Miss Smith all night.
But at dawn, a hot topic quickly dominated Lymington's news headlines: "The Smith family's heiress hires thugs, only to be trapped and humiliated in a club, explicit photos exposed!"
Luke's eyes twitched as he opened the photo, it was an unbearable sight of Miss Smith being lewdly tormented by different men.
She looked in agony, crying and struggling, her clothes torn, with visible bruises and injuries, one can imagine the nightmare she went through that night...
He rushed to the Smith family to question them, but the Smith family claimed they hadn't found their daughter either. The mother wept, saying they had no idea where the scandalous photos came from.
As soon as he stepped out of the Smith family's door, he bumped into Laura who had been waiting inside all night.
Laura followed Luke as he rushed to the hospital.
Inside the operating room, the tiny baby had gone through a night of rescue efforts before slowly being pushed out by the doctor, and declared out of danger.
Lawrence R's patience had worn thin, he was exhausted, and in his icy gaze, there was only his remaining son.
He couldn't hold him yet, because he was premature, weighing only one pound and nine ounces. Perhaps if he had been born a few days later, he would have reached two pounds.
Maybe he wouldn't be in a life-threatening condition, tossed under the stone mortar in the freezing wind...
He silently guarded him, using cigarettes as his life-saving medicine through the protective window.
Laura roared and shouted something in Lawrence R's ear, but he couldn't hear a word.
"Lawrence R, believe me! It's not at all like Darcy's cunning defense. She took advantage of Winnie falling into the sea and Olivia being violated, and bit back at us! We really had the evidence of her harming your mother, but unfortunately, she released it all." Laura continued to shout.
“Now in ruins, now that there was no evidence, poor Winnie must have jumped into the sea in despair. She didn't run away; I know because I contacted her. She never once thought about saving Rock. She was sincere towards you, but you sent her to a mental hospital, cooling her heart..."
"I don't care who you are, if you don't want to die, then get out now. My son needs peace." Lawrence R's voice was as cold and unyielding as a rock.
Ray, displeased with the situation, approached and pulled her away. "Laura, why are you causing trouble here? I know you're Winnie's best friend, so you're defending her endlessly. Darcy has suffered from their conspiracy, endured so much injustice..."
Ray was interrupted by Laura's furious outburst. She suddenly slapped his solid face with all her might!
