Chapter 925 Performing Surgery
Jake looked as pale as a ghost under Olivia's watchful eyes. Before he could say a word, he was lifted into the ambulance. The police officer, looking both apologetic and hurried, explained, "We got orders this morning to release Jake for medical treatment, but he had a heart attack at four in the morning."
"With limited staff at the detention center, we didn't find him until seven. We notified you right away to come and get him."
"Take him to the hospital first."
Tears streamed down Olivia's face. She quickly thanked the officer and followed Jake into the ambulance. "Dad, Dad...?"
Just then, Winnie's call came through.
"Hello, Winnie, I've got my dad."
"Mr. Smith was really released?" Winnie sounded surprised, then quickly asked, "How is he?"
"He had a heart attack and is unconscious." Olivia's voice broke as she clutched the half-pill in her hand. "I need you here, Winnie."
"On my way!"
Jake was rushed to Evergreen Hospital, one of Lawrence's facilities in Lymington.
Winnie arrived an hour later.
Olivia was waiting outside the ICU, keeping vigil over her father.
Several doctors were already examining him inside.
"Winnie, you're just in time." Seeing Winnie, Olivia immediately turned and handed her a sterile gown and gloves. "Help me check my dad's condition. Work with the doctors. You're a doctor too. I need to know if there's any poison in his heart."
Winnie understood what she meant.
Olivia wanted her to identify the poison Lynn had used.
"You have experience with this. You detected the toxins in Melissa's body back then." Olivia's grip tightened on the items in her hand. "Sam only gave me half a pill!"
"Stay calm, Olivia. I'll go take a look."
As soon as Winnie stepped into the room, she saw several senior doctors shaking their heads.
One was pressing on Jake's heart, and another was examining the blood test results. They were discussing, "The patient's heart condition has been chronic. His medical history shows he's had four bypass surgeries. His current state is critical. His hemoglobin is very low, bilirubin is extremely high, and his heart is failing. If this continues, his brain might suffer from hypoxia, leading to brain death caused by heart failure... A heart transplant isn't feasible either."
"He's been poisoned!" Winnie interjected.
The doctors turned to look at her. "Poisoned?"
"Can't you detect the toxins through the blood tests?" Winnie approached them. "May I see the blood test report?"
"And you are?"
"I'm a licensed doctor."
The doctor handed the report to Winnie, frowning. "If you hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't have suspected poisoning. His heart condition alone could explain the abnormalities in his blood. Identifying the specific toxins might require detailed blood dialysis."
Winnie's eyes narrowed. It seemed that Lynn had used a very subtle poison, prepared for the possibility of it going undetected.
If Jake had died in prison without suspicion, it would have been ruled as natural organ failure.
This way, Lynn wouldn't be implicated. No wonder she dared to poison him!
"Doctor, can I get a blood sample?" Winnie asked urgently.
An assistant handed her a test tube.
Winnie immediately took it to the lab for a full analysis.
Two hours later, she emerged with a grim expression.
Olivia rushed to her, watching her remove her gloves. "How is it? Can you identify the toxin?"
"It's a synthetic biological toxin," Winnie said, frowning. "But identifying all the components will take time. Developing an antidote will take even longer. Mr. Smith is in critical condition. I'm afraid the antidote I create might not be complete.
Olivia, without detoxification, Mr. Smith won't last until the day after tomorrow."
"Then I have no choice..." Olivia's voice was filled with despair as she clutched the half-pill. "I have to give him this first?"
"Lynn wouldn't dare give fake medicine. She's afraid of mutual destruction in this gamble! Give it to Mr. Smith. We need to wake him up so he has a chance for a heart transplant."
Olivia nodded, her expression cold. "How did Lynn get such a potent and hidden poison? Even you can't guarantee an antidote. This poison is powerful. From what I know, Lynn's family doesn't have a pharmaceutical factory!"
Winnie's hands hung at her sides, her slender fingers slowly rubbing together. She had been curious about this. Seeing the toxin in Jake's blood, she felt a familiar sense of dread.
Her eyes darkened as she turned to Olivia. "I know two people skilled in making poisons. One is Ishara, but she's recently disappeared.
The other is..."
"You mean, Darcy?" Olivia's face fell, her eyes widening.
Winnie's fingers tightened slightly, her eyes cold. "Remember Mrs. Rodriguez's long-term poisoning after her kidney transplant? Lawrence couldn't figure it out! Darcy's family has a pharmaceutical factory. She even gave my uncle hallucinogens. She's skilled in illegal drugs."
"Are you saying, Darcy... might be back?" Olivia's voice was filled with uncertainty and anger.
Winnie was noncommittal. "It seems Lynn doesn't have the capability or cunning for this. The toxin in Mr. Smith's body resembles Darcy's work."
Thinking of Darcy's past misdeeds, Olivia felt a chill. "She escaped from the hospital after Lawrence took her kidney and imprisoned her, all because of Ray's indulgence! Winnie, Darcy must hate Lawrence and you. If she's back, there could be more trouble."
"She's in hiding now. If she has the guts to show herself, we'll deal with it then." Winnie was unafraid.
The two fell silent. Winnie received a text from Ray: [I brought Mia back. She stayed at Jeremy's last night. Not sure what happened, but Mia's very happy and wants to see you!]
It seemed Mia had gotten the hair.
Winnie felt a surge of excitement and stood up. "Olivia, I need to leave for a bit. Keep an eye on Mr. Smith. I'll be back soon."
Olivia hesitated for a moment, then grabbed her sleeve, looking up with a forlorn expression. "Winnie, I'm planning to have the abortion today."
Winnie's eyes widened in shock, her whole body stiffening. She grabbed Olivia. "Why?"
