Chapter 745 He Saved Mr. Harper's Daughter
Winnie clutched her chest, trying to come up with an excuse. "I just…he said he came tonight because of me. I feel…responsible. If he hadn't come for me, he wouldn’t have been in the greenhouse…"
She stared at Bentley, totally confused. She couldn't believe that the once invincible eldest scion of the Veridiania was now gone.
No one could wrap their heads around the fact that someone as high and mighty as Lawrence would die in an explosion.
Winnie figured there had to be something fishy about this explosion.
Bentley didn't know how to comfort Winnie. It was clear she was super sad and still in denial.
Nearby, Samuel and his wife Faith Jordan were inconsolable. Faith was holding her head, crying uncontrollably, and angrily shouting, "How could an explosion happen at Mr. King's house out of nowhere? Mr. King, didn't you check the security when you bought this place? It was her first time at a party after coming back to the country, and she got blown up. How can I handle this? Samuel, you have to stand up for our poor daughter!"
Samuel's eyes were bloodshot, his face full of anger and sadness.
Adam looked at them, feeling super guilty. Samuel was his political buddy.
They all watched as the firefighters pried open the big glass door of the greenhouse, and a team of paramedics rushed in.
Everyone stared at the smoky ruins of the greenhouse, waiting anxiously.
"Dad, I'm here." Suddenly, a girl cried out from behind the crowd.
Samuel and Faith's bodies stiffened, and they turned around quickly.
A pretty girl in her twenties stood there, but she was covered in soot, looking a mess, with messy hair. Her blue strapless dress was half-torn, and she had a man's black suit jacket draped over her upper body for cover.
Beside Angelina Harper stood a tall, handsome man.
It was Lawrence, with his sharp, good-looking features.
He had lost his suit jacket, leaving only a dirty white shirt, but it couldn't hide his elegance. His tie hung loosely to one side, making him look both disheveled and arrogantly lazy.
Winnie's eyes widened in disbelief. She instantly recognized Lawrence's face.
Her blank mind turned into a buzzing mess, and when Lawrence noticed her gaze, she didn't even have time to look away in shock.
And so, he caught her red-handed. Amidst the crowd and the lights, he looked at her from across the distance.
Lawrence noticed her eyes were red and swollen, beautiful like apricot kernels, brimming with tears.
Suddenly, his sexy thin lips curved slightly.
Lawrence noticed that Winnie was worried about him.
Even though he had just gone through a life-and-death ordeal, his gloomy mood lightened, and he even felt happy.
"Angelina!" At this moment, Faith shouted and ran towards Angelina, crying and hugging her, "Thank goodness you're alive. You scared me to death. Your father and I thought you were inside."
"Angelina, what happened? The surveillance clearly showed you entering the greenhouse elevator." Samuel also stepped forward, crying with joy. He only had one daughter, Angelina, and when he heard the news of her death, he almost couldn't hold it together.
"Dad, I did go into the greenhouse, and I almost died," Angelina cried. "But luckily, Mr. Rodriguez saved me."
She gave Lawrence a shy glance with her bright eyes.
Then Angelina recounted what happened, "You have no idea how scary it was! I just wanted to check out the flowers and plants in the greenhouse. I heard from the servants that Mr. King's villa had some rare species. I didn't expect that as soon as I got into the elevator, there'd be an explosion with Mr. Rodriguez. Luckily, Mr. Rodriguez was quick-thinking. He activated the elevator's emergency closure and alarm. So, when the explosion happened, even though the elevator cables snapped and we fell from the second floor to the basement, we managed to avoid the fire that followed. Both sides of the elevator glass were blown away. I almost got trapped in the basement and couldn't escape. It was Mr. Rodriguez who, in the face of life and death, didn't abandon me, a stranger, but instead helped me."
Angelina's eyes sparkled even more as she looked at Lawrence with admiration. "He pried open the stuck glass with his bare hands, then jumped onto the elevator shaft and calmly pulled me up. The greenhouse was still burning, with debris falling everywhere. He had countless chances to abandon me and escape faster, but he didn't. He held onto me tightly, leading me through a path that avoided the fire, and we escaped! I almost got hit on the head by a piece of debris, but he used his arm to shield me. His arm is injured."
Angelina reached out to touch Lawrence's arm, but he dodged lightly with no expression, as if the danger hadn't happened to him.
Lawrence turned his eyes to Samuel and said indifferently, "Mr. Harper, it's not as dramatic as Angelina said. I just didn't want to be the bad guy in your eyes if I survived and she didn't. To put it bluntly, I saved her just to avoid trouble for myself."
"Anyway, Lawrence, thank you for saving our daughter!" Samuel gratefully extended his hand.
He'd heard stories about Lawrence Veridiania. Arrogant. Ruthless. A betrayer of friends. But after today's events, he suddenly felt Lawrence wasn't so bad and saw him in a new light.
However, Lawrence had anticipated the situation. Had he lived and Angelina died, Samuel would have held him accountable.
He had to save her, for his own sake.
To Samuel, a high-ranking official, the lives of others held no significance; such was his mindset.
Lawrence saw the selfishness in Samuel's eyes.
He shook hands lightly, not wanting to have much interaction with him.
"Mr. Rodriguez! Thank you, you're my lifesaver." At this moment, Angelina couldn't help but look at Lawrence with deep affection.
She wouldn't forget how Lawrence had calmly saved her during the explosion.
In fact, they didn't know each other in the elevator. She was just attracted to his looks, but he was cold and ignored her.
After the explosion, when they fell into the basement with the elevator, she'd assumed he would abandon her.
