Chapter 905 Pleading
Olivia's mind was a whirlwind of confusion, doubting the entire situation from the start. She was furious. "Where's Finn? Get him over here right now and have him explain everything to me on the way!"
"Okay, I'll call Rhea."
"Mom, let's go to the hospital first!"
Returning to Lymington after several months, Olivia felt the city she grew up in had turned cold and unwelcoming. Before she turned twenty-three, she was the heir to the Smith Family, Jake's daughter, and had everything she wanted.
At twenty-four, being violated by Sam marked a turning point in her life.
Since then, life had lost its color.
The cold treatment she received in Lymington over the past three years made the city seem even more chilling.
The hospital was in the city center. After getting out of the car, Olivia wasn't surprised when the front desk couldn't provide any information about the Thomas Family.
It was as if someone had told the hospital not to give her any information, and the staff's attitude was icy.
Yasmin frowned. "I don't know if the Thomas Family is doing this on purpose. This morning, Rhea and I came here, and it took forever to get Joshua's dad on the phone. He yelled at us, saying we couldn't see Joshua's body and that he was in the hospital. He threatened to fight anyone who brought a coroner to the morgue."
"Then the hospital security kicked us out."
Olivia narrowed her eyes, suspecting that Joshua's father wasn't really in the hospital but was guarding Joshua's body.
She pressed the nurse, "I'll ask again, which floor is the Thomas Family on?"
"Miss! I've already told you, you can't invade a patient's privacy. Mr. Thomas isn't seeing anyone, and you shouldn't try to access the morgue either." The nurse's attitude was firm.
Then, Olivia understood that the hospital had likely been bought off by the Thomas Family.
Otherwise, why would the hospital be so arrogant towards her?
She let out a cold laugh and pulled Yasmin aside.
"Olivia, if we can't talk to the Thomas Family, how can we plead with them?" Yasmin was worried about Jake. "Your dad is in detention, and we don't know if he's being mistreated. He's old and frail. I'm so worried he won't survive being convicted..."
"I won't let him be convicted! Not even for manslaughter, because I don't believe it."
Olivia gritted her teeth, pulling out her laptop, her eyes filled with suppressed anger. "And who said I'm looking for the Thomas Family to plead with them? The fact that they won't allow an autopsy on their son raises a lot of questions."
Her fingers flew over the keyboard, hacking into the system with ease.
In no time, the screen displayed the building where Joshua's father was supposedly hospitalized.
Closing the laptop, Olivia stood up, her cold eyes fixed on the security guard at the entrance to the inpatient department. "Mom, wait here for Finn. I'm going to the Thomas Family's room."
"You... you found it?"
"Yes."
Olivia pulled out a hat, lowering it to cover her face, and quickly blended into the crowd heading into the inpatient department.
The Thomas Family was on the second floor of the inpatient building.
The morgue was just behind it.
The Thomas Family guarded the area like sentinels, preventing the Smith Family from getting near Joshua's body.
Olivia watched from one side of the hallway, her eyes cold as she observed Joshua's father going in and out of the room.
Finally, Finn arrived.
Seeing Olivia's petite frame but the fury in her eyes, Finn couldn't help but feel scared.
He approached her hesitantly, calling out weakly, "Olivia."
Olivia stared at him and slapped him across the face.
"Olivia!"
"You're despicable!" Olivia's eyes were icy, her voice low and filled with anger. "Didn't I warn you before I left Lymington not to aim too high and not to drag my dad into your mess? Did you ignore my words? It's bad enough you ruined your own family, but why drag my dad down with you? He's about to have heart surgery, don't you have any conscience?"
"Olivia, I... I didn't know Jake's health was that bad."
"Bastard." Olivia didn't believe him, her eyes dark. "I looked into it. You run a loan company. Why did you get involved with the Thomas Group?"
"Someone introduced me to the Thomas Group for a loan..."
Olivia's gaze was cold. "I know, a two-hundred-million-dollar mortgage. Why would your small loan company give out such a large loan?"
"The Thomas Group offered high interest, six percent! I thought they were solid, and the interest alone could sustain my entire company, so I arranged the loan through the bank. Who knew they'd stop paying after two months! My funds dried up, I couldn't repay the bank, and my company was on the brink of bankruptcy. I had no choice but to ask Jake for help, hiding it from the bank. Then Joshua set me up, reporting me and Jake, leading to an investigation by the commercial crime unit. I don't get it. If he didn't want to repay the two hundred million, he could have discussed it privately. Why report Jake and me? Did he have a grudge?"
"I was furious, and Jake couldn't take it either. We went to the Thomas Group yesterday to confront Joshua, hoping to resolve things peacefully. But as soon as we entered his office, Joshua had some thugs tie me up! They didn't tie up Jake, and that's where things went wrong. I was tied up in another room, hearing Jake and Joshua arguing. Then there was a fight, and somehow, Jake picked up an ashtray and hit Joshua on the head! Joshua fell, and they started fighting. Maybe in self-defense, Jake hit him more than once. Joshua eventually stopped moving, and there was blood everywhere... I told Jake to stop, but he was like a madman, his eyes bloodshot. By the time I got free and ran out, Joshua was unconscious, the scene a mess, everyone calling for an ambulance..."
Finn held his head, dazed as he recalled, "I was supporting Jake when the Thomas Family arrived with some people and beat us up. Then the police came. Based on the blood, the bruises, and the bodyguards' testimonies, they arrested Jake. Last night, Jake was interrogated at the police station all night. At four in the morning, news came that Joshua had died, and Jake was basically convicted of manslaughter. Now, the Thomas Family refuses to accept the police investigation, insisting on charging Jake with murder. Your mom and my mom went to offer compensation this morning but were kicked out. Maybe you should go plead with Joshua's father?"
Olivia took a deep breath. Her mind was filled with the information Finn had given her, and she was trying to make sense of it all.
She stared at the hospital room, her hand clenching. "We have to find him, that's for sure. Follow me."
With that, her determined figure headed towards Joshua's father's room.
