Chapter 326 Recognizing Each Other
Lawrence, distracted by Sidney's injuries, found it difficult to concentrate on analyzing his son's words. Consequently, he promptly instructed the SWAT team to secure the child to him and safely escorted both of them out of the cave.
Winnie's gaze followed "Oscar" but she only saw her unconscious son still pointing toward the ground with stiff fingers. She didn't know why, but she felt uneasy. She was certain that she had seen with her own two eyes that Oscar was already rescued. She attributed the ominous feeling to the possibility of seeing "Oscar" being seriously injured. Therefore, she quickly stepped forward, wanting to catch up with Lawrence and exit the cave.
"Wait, Winnie!" Olivia suddenly called out to her. She also heard what "Oscar" had just said. Unlike Winnie, Olivia knew that Lawrence had another twin, just like Oscar. A sudden insight hit her, making her realize she had been slow to grasp the situation all night. Both Winnie and Lawrence independently reported the kidnapping of their son, revealing a connection beyond mere coincidence. The child beside Lawrence was probably also kidnapped, suggesting the unsettling possibility that both twins had been taken.
Olivia took a deep breath and scanned the cave with her torch-like gaze.
"Olivia, what's wrong?" Winnie held her chest, feeling a strong palpitation, but she didn't know why.
"Follow me!" Without hesitation, Olivia pulled Winnie tightly, ignoring the SWAT team shouting at them to exit the cave. Instead, she led Winnie deeper, searching for something. "Let's keep looking. Maybe there's something hidden here."
"What do you mean?" Winnie was very confused.
"Another child, Winnie!" Olivia exclaimed, stomping her foot in frustration. Yet, it was more urgent to rescue the other child than to spend time explaining everything to Winnie at that moment. The explanation could wait.
"What?" Winnie was puzzled. But the further they went, the darker it became, and the intense feeling of unease grew stronger. They continued until they stumbled upon a small cave nestled within a heap of rocks, resembling a dead end that stretched further into the depths.
A weak voice of a child, on the brink of losing their life, emanated from inside. "Mommy...is that you?"
Winnie stared at the cave, stunned, and abruptly covered her mouth. She was doubting her ears, wondering if she heard it wrongly. However, the voice sounded so much like Oscar's. So gentle, so helpless and he was crying.
"Oscar, is that you?" She couldn't believe it, squatting down and desperately moving the pile of rocks, throwing them aside with Olivia. The possibility seemed implausible; after all, Oscar had just been taken away by Lawrence.
Winnie's heart pounded, and she struggled to crawl inside until the light from her phone illuminated the bruised face of a little boy. She was in a daze, astonished, thinking that it was all an illusion. She couldn't fathom the scene before here, there was a child with the exact same face as Oscar.
Overwhelmed by an undeniable rush of emotions and tears, Winnie crawled over, holding the little one tightly. Her entire chest felt like it was shattered as she trembled. "You...you are Oscar! Then just now..."
"It's Sidney, Mommy. You finally came." Oscar struggled to breathe, tears streaming down his face. He thought he was going to be abandoned by his parents. After all, no one knew of his existence.
"Winnie!" Olivia sighed genuinely, her eyes slightly red. "Hurry and take the child to the hospital!"
Winnie clumsily got up and carried the little one out of the cave.
In the intensive care unit, Winnie gazed at Oscar, who had just been wheeled out from the operating room. Bathed in bright lights, his face appeared as pale as a sheet.
The surgeon expressed relief and said, "I appreciate your prompt action in bringing him here and performing the necessary tracheotomy en route to the hospital. Had it been just a moment later, the child might not have survived. Given his prolonged asthma, and apparent signs of drowning, it's astonishing he endured for two hours. How did you manage to attend to both children? There was another child admitted urgently before you, arriving from the same incident site."
Winnie snapped back to reality, slightly lifting her head. Olivia walked in softly, hesitated for a moment, and worriedly said, "Lawrence also chose this hospital as it was the closest.
"I asked one of the nurses downstairs and she told me that the other little boy was placed in a private senior ward and Lawrence had his bodyguards block it off. He just had surgery and isn't suitable for a transfer so you might be seeing Lawrence around." Olivia gently squeezed Winnie's hand.
She added, cautiously suggesting, "Considering Oscar's delicate situation, we must stay hidden for the time being." After speaking, she quietly gazed at her.
In the serene space, Winnie still felt dazed, as if she couldn't come back to her senses. "Olivia, how is this possible? The child taken away by Lawrence tonight, was it truly not my imagination?" It was too unbelievable. Her mind went blank, and she couldn't find any clue amidst the confusion.
"I am certain Lawrence was holding a boy in his arms when he left," Olivia reassured her with a pat on the back of her hand, a glimmer of a smile in her eyes.
"Are you sure it's just a mild concussion?" Lawrence called all the pediatric doctors over, his expression intense and sharp. "Then why hasn't my son regained consciousness?"
The doctors stood in stunned silence, visibly trembling as they observed the man, who seemed to have limited medical knowledge. "Mr. L, your three-year-old son has multiple injuries and appears quite shaken. Due to his already frail body, he may remain unconscious for a few hours. However, rest assured, there is no immediate threat to his life."
"Mr. L, the doctors have emphasized this repeatedly. Sidney is recovering well and there is nothing for you to be overly concerned about. Perhaps you're too exhausted, too tense," Luke whispered softly beside him.
The tall man furrowed his brow. He couldn't bear the pain of losing his son. Despite Sidney being right in front of him, he couldn't dispel the lingering worry. This peculiar sensation persisted. The man massaged his temples and at that moment, Barbara came over again, pleading, "Mr. L, Darcy is in the next room, in agony and shedding tears. Could you please go and see her?"
Lawrence squeezed his son's hand before letting go, furrowing his brow, and walked away. "Take good care of Sidney, notify me as soon as he wakes up."
As Sidney lay in bed, he stirred slightly, gradually awakening to the sound of his father's deep voice. He knew he would soon confront Darcy, the woman he disliked. Feelings of anger began to well up within him. However, as he started to react, the two nurses beside him were taken aback by his face. One of them exclaimed, "Did I just imagine it? I swear I saw this charming young boy in the intensive care unit upstairs."
"Have you been working overtime too much?" joked the other nurse.
"This unforgettable handsome face, I can't be mistaken. Are they twins?" murmured the nurse, while changing Sidney's intravenous bottle, unaware of his racing heartbeat.
Sidney almost cried out in relief, knowing that his brother, Oscar, had been saved too and was being treated in the ward above him. Clutching onto this news tightly, Sidney speculated that it wasn't his father who had saved Oscar; otherwise, he wouldn't be in the ward, getting treated.
It could only mean that it was his mother who had saved Oscar. She had been there too, at the cave. Just the thought of it brought Sidney back to life completely. His weak eyes rolled around and fixed on the servant in the hospital room—
"Oscar, are you awake? Look at Mommy." Upon realizing that her son had emerged from anaesthesia, Winnie quickly moistened a cotton swab with water. With a palpable sense of concern, she delicately dabbed his lips.
Although Oscar opened his eyes, he didn't speak. As if telepathically connected, he suddenly raised his finger and pointed to the door. Dawn was approaching, the darkest time of the night, and the room was not properly lit.
Following Oscar's gesture, Winnie turned around. In that second, her eyes widened, and she held her breath. She stared at the door in astonishment as a little boy stealthily entered. He was wearing a patient's gown, with a physique similar to Oscar's, but leaner. His face was an exact resemblance to Oscar's.
Sensing her intense gaze, the little one froze, feeling somewhat bewildered and nervous, standing there. Their gazes intertwined warmly with Oscar lying in bed.
Winnie drew in a sharp breath, finally confirming that the scene in the cave was not a dream. The existence of the two little darlings was now undeniable, and there was a strong likelihood that they were both her own.
"Mommy..." Sidney hesitantly called out the title he had fantasized about countless times, his voice filled with a mix of longing and uncertainty.
