Chapter 927 Acting Up
Winnie was speechless. Ray had tried to talk to Jeremy for hours last night, but Jeremy just wouldn't listen. He was too wrapped up in his hatred for Olivia. Ray wanted to come clean that the child was his, but Jeremy didn't believe him anymore.
Olivia had lied so many times that Jeremy had started to take her lies as the truth.
Winnie remaining silent made Olivia's brief hope crumble.
Olivia smirked knowingly. "He turned you down, didn't he? I know Jeremy too well. He can't hate me enough."
"But sometimes, people say one thing and mean another! If he hates you but still secretly helps you, what does that mean? It means he loves you, Olivia!" Winnie said, frowning.
Olivia didn't want to hear anything that might shake her resolve. She laughed bitterly. "Winnie, you probably haven't seen the news. The DeRoss family has announced Jeremy and Lynn's wedding. He really doesn't need a child."
She walked determinedly toward the infusion chair.
The nurse took the syringe and the IV bag, which was labeled with anesthesia. Olivia took a deep breath. "Do it."
Winnie sighed inwardly. If she couldn't persuade Olivia, she would have to take matters into her own hands.
Winnie gave a barely perceptible nod to the nurse.
The needle pierced Olivia's skin, and she felt the cold liquid invade her veins. Her eyes turned red. Once the anesthesia took effect, the child would be lost forever...
She didn't know how long she had been unconscious when she woke up, lying on a dark blue operating table.
Olivia's vision was blurry, and it took a moment for her to come to her senses. Her hand instinctively went to her abdomen, and a wave of cold despair washed over her. "The baby... is it gone?"
She looked at the nurse cleaning up the instruments, tears welling up in her eyes.
"Of course, it's gone," Winnie said, pulling back the curtain and walking in just in time.
She held Olivia's hand, which was reaching down to check, and scolded her. "The surgery is over. You were under anesthesia and didn't feel a thing. Just try to think positively!"
"I... I'm not upset," Olivia said, biting her lip stubbornly. "I just didn't expect it to be so quick. I didn't feel anything."
She looked lost, her tear-streaked face a picture of sorrow.
Winnie felt a pang in her heart and said deliberately, "If you felt something, it wouldn't be called a painless surgery, would it?"
The nurse cleaning up nearby chimed in, "That's right. Modern surgical techniques are very advanced. You won't feel much pain. Once the dizziness wears off, your friend can take you home."
Olivia hid her deep sorrow and avoided looking at the blood-stained instruments. She sat up, pulled her legs together, and saw blood beneath her.
A shiver ran through her, and an empty pain filled her mind. She quickly put on her pants. She had expected to have trouble walking, but to her surprise, the surgery had been so easy that she could walk normally.
Olivia frowned, feeling her abdomen. Puzzled, she whispered, "Winnie, are you sure the surgery was done correctly? Where's Mireille? I want to ask why I don't feel any pain. It was still a surgery, after all."
Winnie's eyes flickered, and the nurse paused.
The nurse glanced at Winnie. "Mireille? She went to the next surgery after finishing yours."
"You're overthinking it. Lots of young women have this procedure. Some even go back to work the same afternoon. You know that," Winnie said, trying to lighten the mood with a teasing tone.
"But my abdomen doesn't even feel swollen..."
"That's because the anesthesia hasn't worn off yet!" Winnie interrupted.
Olivia frowned. Was that true? She had never had this procedure before and didn't really understand.
"Alright, go rest over there. You can't sit down. I'll get your medication," Winnie said, pointing to a comfortable chair and giving her instructions.
Seeing how concerned Winnie was, Olivia's doubts settled. She had briefly wondered if the surgery had been done at all because she hadn't felt any pain.
But seeing Winnie running around for her, she thought it unlikely she was being deceived.
Olivia knew Winnie wouldn't go against her wishes lightly. She also knew her own stubbornness.
The surgery must have been done. She almost didn't dare touch her abdomen.
Winnie quickly returned to the operating room and instructed the nurse, "Make sure to destroy the evidence."
The nurse smiled. "Don't worry, Ms. Anderson. I've already aired out the anesthetic smell."
"Good. Also, have Mireille prescribe some medication to stimulate the abdomen," Winnie said, narrowing her eyes.
"You want Ms. Smith to feel abdominal pain?"
"Yes. Olivia is more perceptive than she seems. She kept asking about it earlier. She might have sensed something was off."
To complete the act, the hospital's medication was safe to use.
Winnie took the medication and hurried back.
Olivia stood there like an obedient puppet, not moving. Winnie found it both frustrating and amusing. She glanced meaningfully at Olivia's abdomen and said, "Now you're all set. Let's go."
"You're mocking me again," Olivia said bitterly, knowing Winnie was angry. "Winnie, women have abortions every day. Please don't judge me. We women have to learn to make choices when we have no one to rely on. You taught me that. Remember? You said we have to be realistic and not live in a fairy tale of unrequited love."
Winnie fell silent, listening to Olivia's heartfelt words. Her eyes glistened with moisture.
Yes, she had once stubbornly stuck to her pregnancy, holding on to her promise to Melissa, determined to have Lawrence's child. She had lived in a fantasy, telling herself to hold on for his love and forgiveness, believing they would be happy.
But in the end, it was just one excuse after another, one hurt after another.
Did Olivia need to be with Jeremy to be happy?
Not necessarily.
It was just that with the child, and Winnie's suspicions about Mia and Jeremy's relationship, Winnie subconsciously wanted Olivia and Jeremy to end up together. She kept trying to bring them together.
If it didn't work out in the end, was her decision today the right one?
Winnie glanced at Olivia's abdomen, clenching her hand. Well, she had already helped halfway. There was no turning back.
"Olivia, when I was completely disillusioned with Lawrence, I taught you that we women must be independent and strong, not live on the fantasy of a man's love. That advice still stands. But... your situation is different from mine! In other words, your connection with Jeremy is rare! Maybe you don't understand what I'm saying now? There's something I can't tell you yet because I don't know the answer myself. But trust me, Jeremy's main issue with you is a deep misunderstanding!"
