Chapter 174 Darcy's Betrayal
The kiss was tender, and Darcy's fair, delicate hands clasped Lawrence R's chest, a smile on her lips.
Winnie stumbled back, as if a bucket of ice had been poured over her from head to toe.
The ginger-flavored cookies in her hand were crumpled from her tight grip.
The ugly shape seemed to be mocking her, ridiculing her for how naïve she was to think that a bag of ginger-flavored cookies could soften his heart. To think that one night of treatment could make him look back.
But how could he betray her like this with Darcy?
Could you fall out of love so quickly?
Darcy's peripheral vision caught sight of Winnie standing at the door, her face white as snow.
From this distance, it was impossible for Winnie to hear the faint muttering of "Mrs. L" in his mouth when he kissed her!
Darcy's initially miserable face slowly turned into enjoyment as she grew more proactive in embracing Lawrence R's neck.
In his dream, the man's kiss was hazy, with a faint smell of tobacco and disinfectant, quite captivating.
Blushing, Darcy imitated Winnie's soft tone and said, "L..."
L? Last night, someone seemed to be gently calling him by that name, soothing him and helping him relax, assuring him that everything would be fine. Only one person would call him like that.
Lawrence R's ear twitched as he slowly opened his narrowed eyes. Something was off about the person standing before him.
As his gaze cleared, he abruptly realized that it was Darcy, her cheeks flushed.
Furrowing his eyebrows, Lawrence R quickly separated from her, and because he had actually been yearning for that woman and longing for that voice in his dream, a dark expression overcame his face. A wave of self-hatred mixed within him.
He slowly steadied Darcy, comforting her, whispering in a low voice, "I'm sorry, Darcy, I thought..."
Darcy didn't expect that saying 'L' would wake him up. Feeling a chill in the corner of her eyes, she quickly lowered her voice, "It's okay, L, you were just dreaming."
The man slowly leaned back onto the bed.
"Are you feeling better, L?" Darcy pretended to check his pulse.
Looking at her exhausted and concerned face, Lawrence R's gaze became reflective. He came to his senses and realized that he was completely awake.
Overnight, Darcy's medical skills had improved his disorder significantly, but... there were some vague memories swirling in his mind that he couldn't recall.
"Much better." Lawrence R paused and asked, "Last night, were you by my side the whole time?"
"If not me, then who else?" Darcy softly smiled, wearily covering her right abdominal area. "Even though I had just done the kidney donation, and the doctor warned me not to move, I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to help you."
Lawrence R's gaze softened instantly. Seeing her pale complexion, he gratefully said, "Thank you so much for your hard work."
He turned his head, grabbed a tissue, and wiped away her cold sweat. Darcy looked up with closed eyes, her heart pounding. Just as she was about to speak,
He asked with a cold tone, "Did anyone else come to the ward?"
Darcy opened her eyes and caught a glimpse of ice-cold emotions deep within the man's eyes.
Her mind quickly raced, her lashes dimmed, and she pretended to be understanding as she said, "Are you referring to Winnie? If you want her to have come, then let's just assume that she did." She sighed.
This was her way of answering that Winnie didn’t come, not even to have a look!
At the entrance, Winnie was intent on leaving, but witnessing the scene, she could only retreat quietly.
But Darcy's malicious remarks made her turn back!
Listening to Darcy's words, she suddenly remembered last night when Darcy pushed her into the ward.
At that time, it was more important to treat him, and there was no time to think too much.
Then, at six in the morning, the police called, saying her uncle caused trouble, and her uncle denied it, which was even more suspicious.
Thinking about it now, huh, did they intentionally send her away?
So, Darcy couldn't treat him, so she secretly pushed her in, and once she cured Lawrence R, she took credit for it?
There were already too many wounds and misunderstandings between her and Lawrence R. She couldn't let Darcy add another blow! She couldn't turn last night into a misunderstanding either.
Winnie pressed her pale lips tightly, forcefully pushed open the door, and rushed in, "Lawrence R—"
At that moment, the man's face didn't show any emotion, it was cold and indifferent. He sneered, "I didn't ask for her. Don't mention that person again in the future. She's already dead to me."
Winnie froze suddenly.
Where did she die? His heart?
Unconsciously, she crushed the ginger biscuits in her hand and still approached him, ignoring the fact that he turned his eyes coldly towards her as she spoke.
Winnie disregarded what he said and lifted his sleeves, checking his pulse, while also opening his eyelids.
"What are you doing here? Get out!" Lawrence R suddenly grew angry.
Winnie with a pale face, calmly explained, "Obviously, I was the one treating you. I stayed here the whole night, treating you, not her. She couldn't heal you. Feeling guilty after making empty promises, she pushed me in during the middle of the night and then sent me away in the early morning after seeing that I cured you!"
Lawrence R was momentarily stunned, his brows furrowed as he looked at Darcy.
Darcy quickly forced a bitter smile and shook her head indifferently. "L, don't get angry because of her. If she wants to take credit, it's fine. As long as I’ve cured you, I'm satisfied. I don't care if I'm falsely accused!"
Darcy's two sentences effectively turned the tables on Winnie, making her appear aggressive.
Winnie knew very well that Darcy was a conniving person, but she couldn't stay silent. If she didn't explain herself, she knew Lawrence R would be disappointed.
But even if she did explain, Lawrence R might not believe her.
Just like his current expression, filled with scornful anger, pointing at her and rebuking, "I know very well who treated me. Did you really think I'm that easily fooled?"
He remembered last night when Darcy sang to soothe him. It was the voice of the girl from four years ago. Winnie, attempting to take credit for even a complex neurological disorder, was overestimating herself and making a fool of herself.
Lawrence R's voice turned icy, devoid of any emotion. "You are a habitual liar, do you even know how to talk the truth? If it was you who cured me, I find it nauseating. I would rather relapse again! So, you suddenly became an expert in treating functioning neurological disorders? Lying is utterly shameless!"
His words shattered Winnie, leaving her desperate and retreating a step.
She never expected that his disgust and hatred for her would reach this point.
Her heart was full of wounds, hollow and emanating a chilling aura.
She didn't care anymore. She had to reveal everything, gazing at his handsome face with pain as she pointed at Darcy, fearing she wouldn't have another chance to defend herself.
"L, every word I say is true! Let lightning strike me down if I'm lying! It was Darcy who called my uncle and encouraged him to kidnap your mom! I escaped from the seaside villa not to participate in the kidnapping, but to save your mom! I wanted to take your mom home for treatment, but halfway through, Darcy and her people abducted her. My mom was fine back then, but after returning to Lymington, she suddenly suffered from kidney failure and entered a persistent vegetative state. Darcy is responsible! She wants to kill me, and she tried to move you with the kidney donation and morally manipulate you. Don't you understand?"
Winnie finished speaking in one breath, her eyes reddened as she anxiously awaited his reaction.
