Chapter 749 Playing the Victim
"Can't you see it?" Winnie was getting pretty annoyed with this awkward situation. Every time she spoke, her lips brushed against his, making things way too intimate. Her face turned even redder as she snapped, "I still have something in my mouth. Let me get up!"
"Sorry about that," Lawrence said, letting her go gently.
He winced in pain as he got up and gave her back a gentle pat. "Feeling better?"
Winnie felt a bit dazed. His serious and caring demeanor was just like three years ago.
Her heart fluttered slightly, and she pushed his hand away. "Since you're awake, you're fine. Next time, don't play tough guy. If you inhale something in a fire, you need to get it checked out. Moving around can be dangerous."
"Thanks, Winnie. So, you were pretending not to look at me in the rearview mirror, but then you saw I'd passed out?" Lawrence smiled.
At this moment, Winnie really regretted saving this shameless guy again.
"I didn't find you; Bentley did! He was supposed to give you CPR, but he didn't want to, so I had to..." Winnie glared at Lawrence, speechless.
Just then, Bentley's tall figure appeared from the side.
Seeing Bentley's disdainful expression, Lawrence's smile turned into embarrassment. He didn't expect Bentley to be there too. "You're everywhere," he muttered.
Bentley was almost furious.
He gritted his teeth and smiled, "I should have given you mouth-to-mouth just to gross you out. Winnie only stopped because I convinced her."
"Yeah, Bentley's a real saint," Winnie quickly distanced herself.
Lawrence's lips pressed together in disappointment as he looked at her.
Winnie intended to return to the car. "Bentley, let's go."
"Winnie, my throat still hurts," Lawrence coughed.
Winnie was speechless, looking at his extremely handsome face. After Lawrence fell, his shirt was even more wrinkled, but his figure was still upright. Even in his weakened state, he exuded a potent charm.
She doubted if he was pretending to be in pain.
However, thinking that there might still be foreign objects in his trachea, she couldn't be careless.
She looked at Bentley with frustration in her eyes, "Let him get in. We'll drop him off at the hospital."
Before Bentley could say anything, Lawrence limped into the car. "Thank you, Winnie."
Bentley: "Lawrence, how shameless are you! Do you know whose car this is?"
"What difference does it make? You wouldn't leave an injured man stranded, would you?" Lawrence said righteously, his cold eyes shooting towards Bentley.
Bentley stared at him. Playing the victim card with Winnie, then turning cold with him. The audacity. He had to admire the guy's technique. He might have to try that with Melanie.
Bentley got into the driver's seat with a dark face, and the car drove down Camellia Mount towards the hospital.
All the way, Winnie pretended to look at the scenery or her phone, ignoring Lawrence completely.
Bentley glanced at the depressed Lawrence, the corner of his mouth curling coldly.
But the silence in the car was getting unbearable. Being the nice guy he was, Bentley broke it, "Lawrence, why are you out here alone? Where's your driver?"
"When the explosion happened, my phone got blown away. I can't contact anyone now," Lawrence said, his eyes darting to the passenger seat.
Winnie pretended not to hear, but she was definitely listening.
"Use my phone to call your assistant or Andrew. I'll drop you at the hospital, and they can come get you," Bentley offered, handing his phone back.
Lawrence didn't take it, just stared out the window. "Thanks, just drop me at the hospital. I don't get along with my grandpa, and my grandma's sick. No one's home to take care of me. And the person I want to take care of me… is married."
The car was filled with a heavy silence.
Bentley almost hit the brakes.
Winnie stayed quiet.
She couldn't even pretend to look at the scenery anymore, her face turning red.
Bentley glanced at her, trying not to laugh.
Winnie shot him a fierce look but held back, not wanting to turn around and give Lawrence a chance to start talking to her again.
They finally arrived at a nearby hospital.
Winnie sighed in relief, thinking Lawrence could finally get out of the car.
Lawrence stepped out from the back seat, his tall and handsome figure slightly hunched as if in pain. He walked to the front, his face under the hospital's white light showing a hint of vulnerability. "Winnie, can you lend me some money? My phone and wallet were blown away, and I can't pay for the treatment."
Winnie looked at his serious and deep eyes, unable to bear it any longer. "Lawrence, do you think I'm an idiot? You're the young master of the Rodriguez Group. Even if you're down on your luck, everyone in this town knows you. You need money for treatment?"
Bentley clicked his tongue. Winnie was a bit unromantic. He was clearly pretending to be pitiful in front of you, wanting you to stay with him.
"I'm not lying. This isn't a Rodriguez Group hospital." Lawrence pointed seriously at the hospital sign.
Winnie looked and saw it was Hope Haven Hospital, indeed not under the Rodriguez Group.
His face wouldn't get him free treatment everywhere.
She coughed awkwardly and turned her head. "Bentley, I didn't bring cash. You lend him some!"
"Why would I carry thousands of dollars in cash?" Bentley shook his head with a noble and wealthy demeanor. "Just Zelle him."
Lawrence reminded, "My phone was blown away. Winnie, I'll pay you back. How about you get out and transfer the money to me, then you can leave?"
Winnie looked at his pitiful look, feeling dizzy with anger.
She had only seen this kind of shameless yet endearing expression on Sidney and Oscar.
When did Lawrence learn this trick from her sons to act pitiful with her?
This act was so convincing she couldn't refute it.
Bentley glanced at Lawrence, almost laughing at his performance. He coughed, "Winnie, just get out and help him pay. I still need to go home to my daughter, unlike you two, who have someone to take care of your two sons."
Winnie's face blushed from Bentley's teasing.
In the end, she had no choice but to get out of the car, glaring at the penniless Lawrence. "Let's go, to the hospital!"
"Thank you." Lawrence smiled and obediently followed her.
