Chapter 106 Annie Apologizes to Margaret
"I knew you had a thing for me," Lucy blurted out, practically bouncing as she leaned in closer to William.
William gave her a side-eye, but his attention was locked on someone else in the corner.
Margaret watched them hug it out on the dance floor, feeling a weird mix of anger and jealousy.
Out of sight, out of mind, she thought, getting up and heading for the main door of the banquet hall.
"Where you headed?" Lyle called out, quickly catching up.
Margaret stopped, turned around, and said coldly, "Not feeling great. Need some alone time."
With that, she walked out of the hall.
Lyle watched her leave, his eyes darkening. Was she upset because of William? He'd noticed her mood shift the moment William started dancing with Lucy. Even though Margaret had denied it, Lyle's gut told him she had feelings for William. If she really didn't care about William and their relationship was just a business deal, why did she look so pale when she saw him with Lucy?
Lyle felt a twinge of bitterness.
Just then, Grace sauntered over, eyes sparkling. "Lyle, fancy seeing you here."
Grace had been eyeing Lyle all night. She finally saw her chance to get him alone.
Lyle shot her a cold look. "You?"
"Yeah, it's me. Remember me?" Grace's voice was a mix of surprise and shyness. "Lyle, wanna dance?"
"No." Lyle's icy response crushed her hopes.
Ignoring Grace, he sat down where Margaret had been, sipping his red wine. The wine's reflection showed his handsome but melancholic face.
Grace's face went from pale to flushed, her fists clenching at her sides. This was all Margaret's fault! Lyle liked Margaret! What was so special about her that had all these guys falling for her?
Grace's eyes flashed with anger and spite. Tonight, she'd make sure both William and Lyle saw Margaret's true colors.
With that thought, Grace scanned the room for Annie. Spotting Annie grabbing some food, Grace walked over, pretending to do the same.
"Seen Margaret?" Annie asked, knowing Grace was tight with Lucy.
"Margaret?" Grace pointed to the main door. "Pretty sure I saw her head out."
"She left?" Annie frowned.
Margaret wouldn't bail this early, would she? Annie felt a wave of anxiety. If Margaret left now, tonight's plan would be toast. She'd worked hard to convince Bruce to bring her and had everything set up. She couldn't let it all go to waste!
"Need something from Margaret? She just bounced not too long ago. If you hustle, you might catch her," Grace hinted.
"Thanks," Annie said, rushing towards the main door.
The night was still and quiet. Margaret stood on the second-floor balcony, leaning against the railing, gazing at the twinkling stars, lost in thought.
What did William and Lucy's dance have to do with her anyway? Why did it bug her so much?
A cool breeze blew, making Margaret shiver. Just as she was about to head back inside, she heard a woman's voice. "Margaret, there you are. I've been looking all over for you."
Margaret frowned, spotting Annie. Remembering their past run-ins, she felt a surge of caution. She looked at Annie indifferently. "What do you want?"
Annie walked towards Margaret with a tray holding two glasses of red wine. She picked up a glass and handed it to Margaret. "I came here specifically to apologize."
"Apologize?" Margaret eyed Annie suspiciously.
Annie, apologizing? Yeah, right.
Annie nodded earnestly. "All that stuff before was my bad. Bruce already chewed me out, and I know I messed up. To show I'm serious, I brought you this wine."
"Fine, I accept your apology, but I'm not drinking the wine," Margaret said coolly, glancing at the glass in Annie's hand.
She didn't trust Annie to be so nice out of nowhere. She suspected something was up with the wine.
Seeing Margaret hesitate, Annie got anxious. "I'm really trying to make things right. This wine is my peace offering. If you don't drink it, you're disrespecting me."
Margaret's lips curled into a mocking smile. "Why should I care?"
"You!" Annie was about to lose it but remembered her goal for the night. She swallowed her anger and continued to act all pitiful. "You still won't accept my apology. If Bruce finds out, he'll be mad. I really love Bruce; I don't want to lose him."
Margaret looked at her coldly. "And that's my problem because...?"
Annie bit her lip, looking all sad. "Actually, Bruce asked me to apologize to you today. I promised him I'd get your forgiveness. Please, just drink this wine and let's bury the hatchet, okay?"
Seeing Annie's relentless act, Margaret got curious. What was Annie up to?
Since Annie wanted to play, Margaret decided to play along and see what she was planning.
"Alright." Margaret thought for a few seconds, then pretended to be convinced and took the glass from Annie's hand. "Since you're so sincere, I'll reluctantly accept."
Seeing Margaret take the glass, a gleam of triumph flashed in Annie's eyes. She raised her own glass of red wine and toasted Margaret. "Cheers!"
"Cheers!" Margaret smiled faintly, raised her glass, and secretly sniffed it.
Just as she suspected, the wine was drugged!
